Publishing results rather than adjectives
BetterPicThe minimum bar for a comparison in this category is showing actual output, and a surprising number of them do not clear it.
Why adjectives are worthless here
"Realistic", "professional", "studio-quality" describe every product in the category. They differentiate nothing, and an article built on them is a ranking of marketing copy.
What published results reveal
The failures. Every one of these systems breaks on the same faces — strong prescription glasses, tightly curled hair, darker skin tones, pronounced asymmetry — and a comparison of headshot tools showing no bad output has selected rather than tested.
That is the part that cannot be faked, and it is the reason to read one at all.
The uncontrolled variable to look for
Source photographs. Fifteen from one afternoon and fifteen across three years produce incomparable results. A test that does not state which it used has a variable loose in the middle of it.
What survives every methodology
The geometry of a good headshot: contrast between hair and background, a crop matched to the display size, frontal light. Those decide legibility whoever ran the test.
And the date
Prices in this category collapsed. Any comparison written before that describes a market that no longer exists.
