Prince Charles is reportedly ready to ascend the royal throne — with queen consort Camilla by his side.
Charles’ former butler, Grant Harrold, spilled the royal tea on the Firm and what the British public really thinks about the Duchess of Cornwall, 75, in a new interview.
The 73-year-old Duke of Cornwall has weathered his fair share of controversies over the decades, and his wife Camilla Parker-Bowles has been by his side for most of them.
Meanwhile, Harrold, 44, worked for Charles for seven years and was present for many important royal events, including his and Camilla’s 2005 wedding , as well as Queen Elizabeth and husband Prince Philip’s 60th wedding anniversary.
Talking to Slingo , the former royal butler gave his take on whether Camilla will win over the public once she’s seated next to King Charles, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth, 96.
“I’m aware that there’s a real love-hate relationship when it comes to the future of the monarchy,” Harrold explained. “With Prince Charles — the majority of people love him.”
The etiquette expert has said that the public will “absolutely” embrace Camilla when that time comes. “Those that said they couldn’t stand her, it’s now those same people who like her,” he stated.
“Time is a healer,” Harrold continued. “She has proven herself and the Queen has given her that endorsement by supporting her and announcing she’s going to be queen consort.”
Harrold further described his prediction for what Charles’ reign will look like — given his advanced age. Elizabeth, by contrast, was coronated at the age of 27.
“They’ll do an amazing job, but I don’t know how long that will be for. I can’t see him passing the role on [to his son], but what I do think will happen — like the Queen has done — is Charles will pass more on to Prince William,” the royal insider suggested.
Harrold, who founded the Royal School of Butlers, also revealed that his experience working for the royals was “like what you see in ‘Downton Abbey,’ ” as the butlers “are there to look after the family.”
“I had the opportunity to look after William and Kate [Middleton] and Prince Harry and that was fun, because not only did I get to know them on duty, but I got to know them off duty, too,” he said.
On the enigmatic Elizabeth, Harrold juxtaposed her “short” stature with her brilliant wit.
“She would do something that was hysterical and nobody would laugh because they wouldn’t know if she was being funny or not. And you’d all look at each other like, ‘Did the Queen just make a joke?’ ” the reverent royal staffer recalled.
“Eventually, somebody would laugh, and you’d all go [laughs]. She’s wonderful at that and that is something that I absolutely loved. Our queen has got a wicked sense of humor.”
