Этот вид был найден в Тампе, штат Флорида и соответственно получил название tampanensis. С того времени больше в Флориде этот вид замечен не был. Существует также второе свидетельство того, что его встречали в штате Миссиссипи, однако материала для культивации там собрано не было. За годы эксплуатации ограниченого генетического набора и последовательного клонирования большинство коммерчески доступных штаммов дегенерировало и теперь вообще не производят плодовых тел, или производят но стерильные. В году sporeworks получили новый штамм. Этот, недавно реанимированый, штам на протяжении 10 лет хранился в виде спор. Кажется время его хранения защитило его от генетической дегенерации и последовательных клонирований. И, несмотря на то, что он не является идеальным, были замечены улучшения в размерах плодовых тел и производстве спор. Также было замечено улучшение формирования склеротий. Небольшии склеротии спонтанно формируются на слое покрытиия во время формирования плодовых тел. С предыдущими штаммамми такого не случалось никогда. Над улучшением штамма ведется работа. Вид Tampanensis отличителен своим свойством формировать на ржаном зерне и слое покрытия склеротии. Склеротия это клубнеплодая масса затверделого мицелия, который напоминает небольшую картофелину. Высокая вариативность при мультиспоровом развитии приводит к тому, что некоторые штаммы оказываются хорошими производителями склеротии, некоторые хорошими производителями плодовых тел, некоторые совмещают эти качества, а некоторые не производят ни того, ни другого. В качестве альтернативного варианта можна начать с мультиспоровой культуры и клонировать наиболее удачные плодовые тела или склеротии. За их утверждениями, некоторые из их банок производили до 70 гр.
