Like many great American companies, PRS was started with a dream and a set of tools. Starting in 1985, PRS Guitars were started by the man himself, Paul Reed Smith in Annapolis, Maryland. By sheer will and of course – the quality of the guitars he was building, Smiths first big break came when he got one of his models into the hands of the one and only Carlos Santana, and word spread from there that his guitars were something new and exciting in the guitar market.
Today, PRS has many different levels of guitars, basses, and amplifiers that players can find at any price point. There are the overseas-made SE Guitars which even at that level – offer players figured tops and quality hardware and electronics. PRS S2 guitars are built in the USA and offer amazing playability and features at a mid-level price point. PRS Core level guitars include the venerable Custom 22 and Custom 24 models, the McCarty and McCarty 594, Hollowbody I and II, 408, 509, Mark Tremonti Signature, and Paul’s Guitar. The Core models each come with a bevy of finishes to choose from, and can also be upgraded with PRS 10-Top flame maple caps and Artist Packages to upgrade hardware and certain specs such as inlay materials.
At the top of the PRS pyramid are the Wood Library and Private Stock instruments. This is where The Music Zoo – a Private Stock Dealer, gets to take a trip to the factory where we can hand pick the woods used in our Wood Library runs. Wood Library is where we can not only hand-pick the specific tops we want, but also switch out body woods of core models to make something truly unique, such as a korina body instead of mahogany or adding in a cool flame maple neck instead of plain grain. When it comes to Private Stock, no option is off the table for what we can build, and The Music Zoo likes to take it to the limit.
