Seeing Sigourney Weaver at the outset gave me the impression that this was going to be a good movie. But the male lead was the worst actor I have ever seen, and I include high school performances of Hamlet. The naive boy from the sticks in the big city? First of all, Cedar Rapids is not a big city (nor is Ann Arbor, where it actually was filmed). Second, in the world of the internet and Amazon Prime and Netflix movies, nobody can be that naive any more - he doesn't recognize the girl outside the hotel as a prostitute? His recoiling from the black man in his suite ... there is really no point in going on, this was simply the most pathetic attempt at making a movie I have ever seen.
Really poorly done spin off movie from the Office. Dunder Mifflin is apparently now an insurance company and Andy is sent to Cedar Rapids for a conference. There isnt one other cast member from the Office in the entire thing, they just had look alikes for Pam, Stanley and Dwight, but the chemistry just isnt there and the whole thing is a confusing mess as you kept waiting for the real Michael or Jim to show up and it would be funny.
Okay film. Just okay. Some humourous parts but a lot of the humour happens to have something or another to do with male homosexuality! If u think this kind of thing is funny, through out the whole film, u might like this. It's just the joke got old real fast, kinda bored me even. John C. Reilly, tho crude made this semi-watchable. Good ending( after the credits).
Don't get me wrong. Itโ€™s got raunch and craziness, but at itโ€™s heart itโ€™s a celebration of kindness, of community. of morality (not the stuffy judgmental kind, the good "remember what's important" kind) โ€“ all while never losing itโ€™s sense of fun.

Ed Helms does a very nice job as a tremendously innocent insurance salesman from a small town in Wisconsin, sent to a convention in Cedar Rapids. This represents his first time on a plane, his first time in the โ€˜big cityโ€™. But while the film may tease Tim a little, it doesnโ€™t treat him with the removed, hip irony most films now would, and makes him a complex character (e.g. back home he has a fun sexual fling going with his 7th grade teacher, wonderfully played by Sigourney Weaver. He may be an innocent, but heโ€™s also a grown man with a sense of humor and self.). This ability to both kid and embrace characters is a long-time strength of director Miguel Arteta and producer Alexander Payne.

With some terrific support from John C. Reilly as a wild-man partier at the convention (who has more humanity than youโ€™d think), Isaiah Whitlock Jr. as a straight-laced black room-mate (who has more humor, and more of a sense of fun than you might think), and Anne Heche as a party girl (who is smarter and more soulful than you might think). Maybe not quite a great film, but a good hearted and very enjoyable one.
Bought this back in October. Just now got around to watching it for the first time. About 15 minutes in it started skipping and blanking out. When it wouldnโ€™t stop I tried another disk with no problem. Tried this Blu-ray again and itโ€™s even worse. I should of tried it right after I received now itโ€™s too late to return.
Very entertaining film with the advantage of having main characters that you care about. Clever and unexpected plot twists but never strays from the basic plot line. Also an effective blending of drama and humor set in - to the main character - the "big city" of Cedar Rapids, IA. Don't want to disparage CR for the many times there, over the years, have found it to be a place with a sophistication, culture and dedication to the arts that it would be hard to find in another city of its size and Midwestern location (It also is not far from the University of Iowa and Cornell College (the first Cornell school) where the entire campus in Mt. Vernon is in the National Registry of Historic Places).
Felt that the film was well worth the rental price and may return to it at some future time, to enjoy it again.
This film is formulaic in the greatest sense of the word. All the characters have memorable arcs. By the end all the characters have completed a hero's journey in one sense or another. Ed Helms has a great character and script to work with. If you are on the fence about, rent it, you will not be dissapointed.
I love Ed Helms, but I was prepared to be disappointed by Cedar Rapids. I was so happily surprised to find this is one of the better movies Ed Helms has been in, possibly his best so far. Sweet, funny, very well written and acted, with a superb cast. A perfect little sleeper of a film. Reminds me of what the greatest indie films used to be.

I wish Ed Helms could find more roles like this for his unique, quirky comedic talent!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great film, watch again and again
I'll admit I only watched this film for the cast. The plot, small town salesman discovers himself at sales conference, would have turned me right off. But it had Ed Helms and John C.Reilly in it. And the Senator from the Wire. So I had to watch it. Turns out its pretty great.

I think the sort of humour in Cedar Rapids is called 'offbeat' but its the sort that makes me laugh. Warm enough to have meaning without being cheesy. Adult enough without being gross. And, having been on a few company conferences myself in the distant past, the activities the delegates are expected to go through resonates quite strongly. This is John C Reilly in 'Magnolia' mode, rather than 'Stepbrothers', Ed Helms does a great job of being overawed by the 'big' city and Isaiah Whitlock Jr. even gets to do a passable impression of Omar. Yeah, this film is happy to say 'we have one of the star of The Wire on our show so there!'. Anne Heche is outstanding as, apparently, the only female insurance salesman at the event while Sigourney Weaver plays a pretty good silver fox. Even Rob Corddry surprises as a vicious redneck.

Definitely one for repeat viewings.
Like an even more ingenuous Will Ferrell, Ed Helms stars as the popular but uber-naive insurance salesman Tim Lippe, who finds himself well and truly out of his comfort zone when asked to represent his small-town company at a prestigious national awards conference. Hooking up with cynical slob Dean Ziegler, wily object of Tim's affections Joan, and gentle bear Ron, Tim soon gets led astray - ultimately being carpeted for skinny-dipping, nearly getting beaten-up at a wild party, and bribing the conference chairman to give his company the award.
Needless to say there are plenty of belly-laughs, some excruciating quotes, and numerous innocent-abroad faux pas; John C Reilly is great as the slovenly Dean Ziegler, whilst Sigourney Weaver makes a welcome cameo as Tim's former schoolteacher turned lover.
5.0 out of 5 stars Music Magpie never dissapoint
Cheap price and it turned out to be a sealed copy. Awesome service from MusicMagpie
This is a good film. Ed Helms is good and John C Reilly just sweetens the pot. Would recommend watching the trailer on YouTube first. If the trailer makes you laugh then buy it.
The film is ok. john c rielly makes this movie watchable.
