Prominent Russian Korea Expert Andrey Lankov Detained in Riga — Delfi Reports
Latvian police detained the well-known Russian scholar and Korea specialist Andrey Lankov in Riga this evening. The news was reported by the portal Delfi.
The arrest took place during a lecture titled “North Korea: What the Leadership Wants and Fears.” The event organisers from Curiosophy Events stated that Lankov was taken to the immigration service.
Agency representatives confirmed that the scholar is awaiting the arrival of his lawyer. According to the latest information, he is expected to be deported to Estonia.
Lankov himself has confirmed the fact of his detention and stated that Latvian authorities have placed him on a “blacklist.”
Russian opposition figure Alexei Pivovarov announced that the Anti-War Committee (which includes, among others, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Garry Kasparov) has sent a lawyer to defend the academic.
