Production of "borscht set" vegetables may decrease in Moldova
In Moldova, the production of key vegetables included in the so-called "borscht set" is expected to decrease. We are talking about white cabbage, onions, tomatoes, and also, possibly, potatoes.
According to preliminary estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture, cabbage production in 2026 may decrease by about 15-20% compared to last year, onions — by 10-12%, and tomatoes — by 8-10%. The potential reduction in potato yield is estimated at 5-7%.
Adverse weather conditions and rising prices for fertilizers and seeds are cited as the reason for the reduction. The shortage of labor in rural areas also affects production indicators: the number of people employed in vegetable growing decreased by about 7-8 thousand people compared to the previous season.
A decrease in production may lead to an increase in prices for "borscht set" vegetables by 10-15% in the domestic market in the coming months. The authorities are considering measures to support farmers in order to minimize shortages and stabilize prices for consumers.
