For it's time it was probably quite enlightened but now it's woefully dated. Colbert was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar and while she's competent as usual they is nothing extraordinary about her work here.

Private Worlds completes Sarah Gainham's masterly trilogy of twentieth-century Austria. Having survived the Second World War and Vienna's lethal post-war political intrigues, Julia Homburg, Vienna's most brilliant actress, and her trusted friend Georg Kerenyi can now return to their private worlds, restore their shattered lives and reaffirm the values that enabled them to transcend the hate, injustice and crimes of those war-torn years. Final part of trilogy. Pointless reading if you've not read the first two. Night Falls On the City is an epic book, the second book , A Place In the Country grew on me as I read it and by the end I loved it. As with the previous books, it is interesting to have the perspective of characters whose country was not on the right side of history. It’s now the early 1950s, and Julia and her new journalist husband (Georgy, a long-time friend) are back in Vienna, rebuilding lives damaged by war. However, the floodgates of the past and the Nazi time are opened by the reappearance of a former SS general, who played a role in both Julia and Georgy’s lives: “His survival was like an unsuspected, rusted and unexploded shell-case ...” The story gives excellent insight
