It is not new, but apparently, it is going viral again.
It is a wellness trend called perineum sunning. The perineum is the part of the human body between the genitals and the anus.
Perineum sunning involves exposing the perineum to sunlight.
It might have been first introduced to the world in a 1986 book called The Tao Of Sexology: The Book Of Infinite Wisdom by Dr Stephen T. Chang.
In the book, the technique is called Sun Worship Exercise and it is prescribed as a way of preventing vaginal infections and haemorrhoids.
You can do it standing by bending down with your buttocks facing the sun or lying down "but make sure that your sexual openings and anus are bathed in the sunlight".
However, perineum sunning did not start getting attention until late 2019, thanks to Instagram .
A US Instagram user named Metaphysical Meagan posted that "30 seconds of sunlight on your (anus) is the equivalent of a full day of sunlight with your clothes on!"
Calling it an "ancient Taoist practice", she said: "I’m spending a maximum of five minutes in the morning doing this."
She claimed that after implementing this, she felt "surges of energy almost immediately", had better sleep and experienced other positive effects.
Actor Josh Brolin , who played Thanos in the Avengers movies, famously tried it for too long and suffered sunburn on his anus.
Recently, videos about perineum sunning have reportedly gained millions of views on TikTok.
So should you try perineum sunning?
Stomp asked a Singapore doctor, who prefers not to be named, and he said: "No scientific basis lah. I heard of it before. I just brushed it aside.
"My guess is the guy who thought of it must have had this idea because the sun is a source of energy, then it must be good for our body. Yes, in a way. Vitamin D is free and good for our body. But we just wear normal PE attire is good enough exposure with 15 minutes being sufficient for a day."
Asked about the risks, the general practitioner with a clinic in Choa Chu Kang said: "Sunburn is bad, worse I think at the perineum. I think our skin on the perineum is thin and would not take such high UV (ultraviolet) exposure.
He cited other risks such as UV-induced skin cancer, photoaging and dermatitis.
The doctor added: "I can’t think of any benefits."
