About the Private Jet
Private jets, often used for corporate needs and also known as business aircraft or business jets, are aircraft designed to transport small groups of people, often covering long distances at high speeds. Most business jets rely on two engines; although some use only one or as many as four. The North American market makes up nearly three-quarters of the private jet market. Around two-fifths of business aircraft manufacturing is now controlled by Textron, through the Cessna, Beechcraft and Hawker brands. Rolls Royce, followed by Pratt & Whitney Canada, are the leading producers of engines for private jet aircraft. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the price of private jets has remained strong, due to an increase demand in private aviation and a tight supply of business jet inventory, along with a reduced number of new jet aircraft for sale coming online.

The first private jet focused on the business jet industry to enter service was the Lockheed JetStar, produced from 1961 to 1980. High-level U.S. figures and celebrities from that era to rely on the Jetstar include Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley, the latter of whom is known to have owned two of the private jets. One of them, named Hound Dog II, remains on display at his Graceland Estate. An Air Force One model of the Jetstar remains on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, at the Wright Patterson Air Force base in Ohio.

Other private jets to fly in the 1960s include the Learjet 23, the first light jet and Grumman Gulfstream II, the first large long-range jet, as well as the British Aerospace 125 and the Dassault Falcon 30. The first jet from Cessna, the Citation I, took to the skies for its maiden flight in September 1969. The 1970s brought more business aircraft models to the sky, including the Canadair Challenger, the Bombardier Global Express, the Mitsubishi MU-300 Diamond and the first trijet from Dassault Falcon Jet, the Dassault Falcon 50.

While the 1980s saw continuation and improvement on the early editions to the private jet market, it would not be until the 1990s that its largest seller arrived, the CitationJet series from Cessna. The 2,000th Cessna CitationJet was delivered in 2017. The 21st Century has brought new names to the private jet industry, including Embraer, which developed the Legacy 600 from its regional jet line, and later the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300. The 2000s brought more light jet offerings such as the VisionJet from Cirrus, and Honda with the HA-420 HondaJet.
