This CD arrived on time and well packaged. The jewel case wasn't cracked (a rarity these days from Amazon), it was shrink-wrapped, and it even had a UPC sticker on it. No security tape with a bar code like the CDs we used to be able to buy at the store, but close enough to make me think it's not a counterfeit. The sound quality is excellent, as is the selection of songs. Nothing will ever match the version of "Sultans of Swing" that is on the live 'Alchemy' disc, and "Eastbound Train", the B-side to the original 45, c. 1978, can still only be found on the 'Live at the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival' album (and a couple of YouTube videos). However, the hard-to-find-on-a-compilation "Boom, Like That," Knopfler's classic song about the vicious hamburger and real estate king Ray Kroc, is included and sounds great. I typically refuse to spend US$25 on an a 'greatest hits'' compilation, but this CD is worth the price. Dim the lights, put on the headphones, kick back, and listen. Some incredible music here.

I ordered this Mark Knophler album but was swnt a Charles Mingus album instead. Still happy though.

Track listing I received was not what was described.

This 2 CD album (make sure you're buying the 2 CD version) is a compilation of some of Dire Straits greatest music, including Tunnel of Love, Romeo & Juliet, Telegraph Road, Brother's in Arms and some newer compositions from lead guitarist and composer Mark Knopfler. Since most people know the Dire Straits songs, let me address the ones created after Dire Straits There's a song with James Taylor singing part lead called "Sailing to Philadelphia" about the famous map cartographers Mason and Dixon (yep, those guys). There are songs about Scotland, fighting in a UN peace keeping force and finally a country-western song with Emmylou Harris. Mark Knopfler plays a finger-picking style, like Chet Aktins and some newer young guitarists It's creates really cool chords and solo notes simultaneously. The sound is fabulous. The mix is dynamic and all instruments are well-blended. I have an Oppo 105 and Marantz SACD player with HDCD capability (20 bits vs. standard CD 16 bit) and when I turned the TV on to view the info and meta date, it said HDCD on both units. That must account for the great sound of this CD. If you're not sure which Dire Strait's compilation to get, I would recommend starting with this first. Being a 2 CD set, it gives you most of their greatest hits (even on the 2nd CD) along with Mark Knopfler's last few decades as a solo artist (with sometime Dire Straits backing him up :-). Truly woth owning.

I liked the melody but can hardly hear the artists voice, it's like he's off in the distance or his microphone is not on

If you are a young music fan or have lived under a rock for the last 35 years and just discovered Mark Knopfler than this is the album for you. A solid selection of his top hits with Dire Straits and a reasonable smattering of his solo work. The real beauty I find in Marks' work is not his ability to come up with the occasional hook, but his mastery of the guitar that makes it a distinct part of his presence. His guitar work is so expressive and haunting that it can take over a song and lead you into remote corners of his creativity only to real you back in with his flawless timing and powerful story telling. What is missing are songs like Six Blade Knife, You and Your Friends, Ride across the River, Fade to Black and Speedway at Nazareth which could make up part of a true listeners collection. What is included are two powerful songs Brothers in Arms and One Every Street. These songs are possibly the best engineered and most dynamic of the collection and deserve a close listen. If you do not have a top of the line stereo, take a CD to you local stereo shop and have them que up these songs on their Krell, Mark Levinson, B&W 801 type of system. Not only will the music reveal itself at a whole new level but your local shop will use these songs to demonstrate and sell their top shelf equipment from that day on. This album will also open you to Marks solo offerings which are quite good. Some of the dynamics and epic boldness of Dire Straits are gone replaced by more subtle overtones and expressive slice of life style stories. His mood can shift from blues to country to electric in the same album which always makes for an interesting listen.

Actual HD recording. Played on oppo bdp105d. 10 k system, sounds better than any of my sacd discs.

Heavy vinyl of excellent quality, the music doesn’t need any defense. I got DS album but this is a nice addition due to quality of this pressing

Brilliant Greatest Hits Collection

I am quite familiar with the work of dire straits through the greatest hits "money for nothing" album and the classic brothers in arms. Not so familiar with Mr Knopflers solo efforts, So based on price and excellent reviews i ordered this even though I probably already own almost half the songs anyway. I love this album. Its great. Like all greatest hit compilations people are always going to say where is this track or where is that one, but its a great well put together album. The solo tracks are really good songs and the extended version of tracks like telegraph road are just amazing. oh.....and boy can this guy play a guitar!

Great Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler album. Has most of the Dire Straits hits on it ( except twisting by the pool, which was a disappointment). However it does have Theme of the local hero on it and why aye man, which was the theme tune for series 3 of Auf Wiedersehen Pet so I was very happy as those 2 compositions are my favourite by Mark Knopfler! They don't make artists like this anymore, unfortunately.

Brilliant Intro or Summary of Dire Straights

Dire Straights are one of the widest ranging stylistically and most literate and poignant of British Blues Rock Bands Dire Straights are unrivalled in their narrative blues rock documentation of British life trough the entire 1980's and 1990's Many Dire Straights Singles are stylistically perfect and compositional and lyrically amazing, and form of the time memories for many people. This Two CD set contains all the brilliant Singles and some other stand out tracks that were never released as singles like - Telegraph Road. This is a brilliant summary or introduction to the Music of Dire Straights, excellent value.

A collection of 2 halves

Consisting of 2 cd`s .The first contains Dire straits greatest hits including the longer tracks .The second is however a mixed bag not all of which are well known .The first cd makes up for the lesser known tracks of cd 2 .

after studying many other dire straits cds this is the one to have with all the classics on hear and bonus cd of later m k stuff which i wasnot familiar but all good not a bad track on cds . though not complete as lady writer missing but got that elsewhere. importantly there all full length versions and not cut down as on other dire strait cds. just the job . would be nice to have more sleeve notes and photos.
