Bugfixes and performance improvements.
Never had a problem. Has been my go to VPN for the past 2 years. Awesome service ever since 👌 Update: to all the negative reviews out there - there’s a ton of options to tweak to make the connection more stable. In fact, this is the only VPN service I know of that offers 3 different options (IPSec, IKEv2, AND OpenVPN). EXPERIMENT!! Not all Wi-Fi is the same. Try changing the connection options. IKEv2 is usually the most stable with OpenVPN coming in second. With the latter you can even change the port number. Maybe stop complaining and actually try to do some research. I’ve had this app for over 2 years and it’s never failed. And for those very strict environments there’s always the official OpenVPN app with preconfigured PIA profiles for literally any situation. And before you ask - I was NOT paid to write this or am getting a discount. I’m just sick of reading reviews from people who seem like they’d rather complain than explore the myriad of connection options this offered by this service /rant
Has worked flawlessly for several years. During that time, I used several iPhones while always maintaining latest iOS and PIA app versions. Then, suddenly several weeks ago, regardless of Wi-Fi/Mobile Network connection, it began disconnecting the PIA VPN, yet allowing Internet traffic, even with KILL SWITCH activated. Ugh! So, I took a chance today, and uninstalled app, then installed again. Left PIA install defaults, which were same as my original settings. So far, it seems fine. However, not enough time has passed to be certain. So, I’ll update the review, if deemed appropriate. Love PIA. Only flaw is occasionally it will not connect with my dedicated IP but will with all other regions provided by PIA. Still have the occasional issue with KILL SWITCH on but app not connected and my public IP revealed. Ugh!!! Frustrating. Windows app works flawlessly. Just the iOS app with latest versions of everything kept updated still has the random disconnect issue even with KILL SWITCH. So, that is the reason for four and not five stars. Support is amazing whenever issues arise. Quick to respond and assist. Hope they can figure out the KILL SWITCH issue soon. Thanks!
I don’t know what you guys did on this new update, but now it’s a huge struggle to connect on iPad and iPhone. It’s try...try...try again, over and over and over hoping it will connect. Switching regions is till a 50% chance it will catch. On my Mac Pro it’s produces slow buffering video streaming even at 100mps speed, slow website loading on both Safari and Firefox and major connection issues on iPad and iPhone. Huge disappointment to a customer of 3 years. Sending “slow speed complaint” for the last 3 years weekly has not improved the service at all and is getting very annoying now. This new update put me over the edge to look for a better service. My one year is up in a month and will be looking for a better provider. **UPDATE** Since the new Mac update recently, everything is running beautifully...connection is flawless on Mac. Connection speed is faster, disconnection speed is also faster. The new design is great and have had no problems with this new Mac update. So CHEERS to the nice job. What ever you did to the Mac update needs to be done with iPhone and iPad update. Connection problems still arise when connecting to Canada and Mexico on iPad and iPhone even after iPhone PIA update. I use them because of the lower MS numbers. Thank you for fixing the Mac issues. Here’s hoping fixes will come to iPad and iPhone issues.
I am sorry to hear about the connection issues you were experiencing! If you still require assistance with this please contact us here: helpdesk@privateinternetaccess.com with the subject as ATTN:SMR and we'd be more than happy to assist further. -PIA CS Team

Private Internet Access VPN
$56.94 for 2-Year Plan + 2-Months Free at Private Internet Access

A powerful VPN service with an ingenious interface and a high price
Since my start in 2008, I've covered a wide variety of topics from space missions to fax service reviews. At PCMag, much of my work has been focused on security and privacy services, as well as a video game or two. I also write the occasional security columns, focused on making information security practical for normal people. I helped organize the Ziff Davis Creators Guild union and currently serve as its Unit Chair.
As a PCMag security analyst, I report on security solutions such as password managers and parental control software, as well as privacy tools such as VPNs. Each week I send out the SecurityWatch newsletter filled with online security news and tips for keeping you and your family safe on the internet.
Private Internet Access offers a robust VPN service with advanced network and privacy tools packaged into a clever interface. A new third-party audit helps build trust, but its rising price gives us pause.
When you activate a VPN, it encrypts all your internet traffic and sends it off to a server controlled by the VPN company. This ensures no one, not even your ISP, can see what you're doing online and makes it harder for snoops and advertisers to track you across the web. While it's one of the oldest surviving contenders in the field, Private Internet Access VPN is still a contender among the best VPNs . It offers double simultaneous connections of most competitors, boasts strong Speedtest scores, sports an excellent interface, and its advanced network settings let tinkerers tinker. A new third-party audit helps it establish trust with customers, but it has grown steadily more expensive in recent years.
Private Internet Access has three billing options, starting at $11.99 per month. That's nearly double the $6.95 the company charged when we first reviewed it many years ago. It's also well above the $9.83 per month average we've seen across the VPNs we review. It's far too expensive for our list of the best cheap VPNs . Comparable top VPNs do more for less. Mullvad VPN is our most affordable Editors' Choice winner at a mere 5 euro per month ($5.08 at time of writing).
Like most VPNs, Private Internet Access VPN incentivizes longer subscriptions with steep discounts. A one-year plan costs $39.95, which is significantly less than the $66.07 average we've seen across the VPNs we've reviewed. Private Internet Access also has a three-year plan for $79. While subscriptions purchased at these prices will renew at the same price, that's not always the case. The company changes up its subscription structure frequently so be sure to read the fine print carefully.
While discounts are tempting, we caution against starting out with a long-term subscription. Instead, start with a short-term plan so you can test the service in your home and see if the VPN meets your needs.
If Private Internet Access VPN is too rich for your blood, it's worth noting that there are also some worthy free VPN services to choose from. Proton VPN , however, is the best free VPN we've yet tested, in large part because it places no data restrictions on free users.
For purchasing a subscription, Private Internet Access VPN accepts Amazon payments, credit cards, cryptocurrencies, and PayPal. Editors' Choice winners IVPN and Mullvad VPN offer more choices for anonymous payments, accepting cash paid directly to their HQ.
You can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously with a single Private Internet Access VPN subscription, which is double the average we've seen across the market. The industry, however, might be moving away from this model entirely. Atlas VPN, Avira Phantom VPN, IPVanish VPN, Surfshark VPN, and Windscribe VPN all place no limit on the number of simultaneous connections.
(Editors’ Note: IPVanish VPN is owned by Ziff Davis, PCMag's parent company.)
Private Internet Access VPN provides split tunneling, letting you designate which apps send data through the VPN and which send data in the clear. This can be handy for high-bandwidth, low-risk activities, like streaming video. There is also a multi-hop feature that routes your traffic through two VPN servers instead of just one. Private Internet Access VPN handles this a little differently than other VPN services, letting you choose the proxy settings and then the second location.
The company does not provide direct access to the Tor anonymization network via VPN, although we should note that a VPN is not required to access the free Tor network. Editors' Choice winners Proton VPN and NordVPN both offer access to Tor, multi-hop connections, and split tunneling.
Many VPN companies layer on additional privacy and security features in order to entice consumers. To that end, Private Internet Access VPN includes its own ad- and tracker-blocking tool called MACE. The company informs us that Google's rules mean this feature had to be removed from its Android app and recommends customers who want to use MACE on Android sideload an APK from its site. However, we must note that sideloading always entails some risk. Private Internet Access also offers a free email breach monitoring service (Opens in a new window) similar to HaveIBeenPwned.
Private Internet Access also supports port forwarding on some servers. This is an advanced setting, and while not necessary for a VPN it's surely going to be appreciated by network tinkerers.
Since our last review, Private Internet Access VPN has started offering dedicated IP addresses to customers. This means that you have the same public IP address every time you connect to the VPN. This should, in theory, be less suspicious looking than a constantly shifting or known VPN IP address and may therefore not be blocked by sites that limit VPN access—such as banks and streaming services. You pay $5 per month for each address, and long term dedicated IP subscriptions include hefty price reductions. That's in addition to the base Private Internet Access VPN subscription. Existing customers can select a duration for dedicated IP address billing. IP addresses are available in Australia, Canada, Germany, Singapore, the UK, and the US.
Along with a handful of other VPN companies, Private Internet Access VPN now offers antivirus protection for Windows devices for an additional $1.49 per month with, again, discounts for longer subscriptions. Editors' Choice winners NordVPN and Surfshark VPN both offer antivirus tools, although we weren't impressed with their performance. We look forward to testing Private Internet Access VPN's antivirus soon.
While VPNs are useful tools for improving your privacy online, they cannot protect against every threat. We highly recommend using standalone antivirus to protect your computer, engaging a password manager to create unique and complex passwords for each site and service, and enabling multi-factor authentication , wherever it's available.
