Kathryn Lynch takes long walks at night as a meditation, but really, she can’t sit still. She walks through the world on the periphery of her senses and makes quick drawings as notes to compositions, which will end up less about painting objects and more about the light and feeling of a place. She doesn’t think she is painting the place at all actually; she feels more it’s about time and the passing of time.
Lynch is gigantic in feeling, which is apparent as the paintings in her current show “RESTLESS” clearly- feel first and look later. Her paintings are very much laden with the memory of her life events. Lynch’s work never stops feeling like dreams rendering reality, as they coalesce the moment, memory, and the light of place without the burden of detail. She feels very much that the language of the work resides within the picture plane itself.
We move through the doorway with ease but are blocked by the invalid, repeatedly suffering with each step, surrounded by loved ones- helping the legs that have a great percentage already given to the heavens. They’re on their way out is the truth of it, as we hold the door, and our attention on the feeble balance of it all. Wanting really to make the best we can while life is still accessible. Besides, greater distances are covered, in just the time it takes to lift our dead weight across the restaurant deck, down the ramp, and into the car. While those times our bodies are dragged seemingly across the interstate, to the other side of the open door, become the building blocks to a love we’ve never experienced before, and somehow, not now, but much later, we realize that’s when we really had it. Love. And we’d do anything, anything at all, to just have that back once again. The hands around the arm pits of the people that meant everything, as they found it impossible to walk from one place to the other.
There’s the landscape of what we see out there, and there’s what we hold in our minds as the horizon of our life experience, and the familiarity we work to re-create… in our lifetime- we may have been very close, even closer than maybe the last one, to understanding.
It just depends on how we traverse the terrain.
Within all the work presented in this exhibition, there is the sense that these artists are using memory as a framework. Some work with the immediate past, and some with memories from a lifetime ago, but that framework is visceral and as strong as a windstorm. All works are heavily emotional, with spiritually charged sensibilities resulting from a new movement of how to approach what is left of what exists. This work is not sentimental, the work is unrestrained.
