Private Dancer by Stephen Leather is a book that was tremendously well-received in Thailand. Bernard Trink from Bangkok Post – the biggest English-language daily in Thailand – believes that “ Private Dancer ought to be made available to every tourist at port of entry” and Pattaya Mail wrote that the book “should be compulsory reading for all first-timers to Thailand.”
I totally disagree with these opinions, but we need to have one important thing in mind! Are you coming to Thailand as a sex tourist, interested in engaging in sexual intercourse with as many Thai bar girls / boys / katoeys as possible? If the answer to this question is “Yes!”, then you’d better get your hands on the book and read it before you bar fine your first girl. If your answer is a definite “No!”, then you’re better off reading any other non-go go bar girl book about Thailand. For starters, I recommend The Occidentals by Caron Eastgate James.
But to have two major English-language newspapers declare that Private Dancer should be compulsory bibliography for everyone landing in Thailand it’s just wrong. I mean, do they really assume that all tourists who arrive in Thailand come here for the girls? Has Thailand really become a destination known just for its red light districts? I wholeheartedly hope not! There are thousands of other things Thailand can offer, apart from Bangkok’s three main red light districts and Pattaya’s Walking Street.
Having said all these, it is now time to look at what Stephen Leather tried to do in Private Dancer : my personal opinion is that he tried to shock and to warn the naïve sex tourists of the traps that they might fall into if they start a relationship with a bar girl. It is exactly what happens to the main character, Pete, who falls in love with Joy, one of the many bar girls from Nana Plaza in downtown Bangkok. Their abortive relationship is a rollercoaster of physical and emotional pain. The reader is drawn into their stories from the very first page: “She’s dead. Joy’s dead. Joy’s dead and I killed her.” It’s a great beginning that hooks the reader and makes him curious about how it all happened.
Pete, an English writer, is sent to Thailand to update a travel book and, while he’s at it, he gets infatuated with Joy, a prostitute from the northeastern part of the Kingdom. In his naivety and willingness to believe her, Pete tries to find reasons to ignore all the signs that warned him not to get involved with Joy. Still, even though he “never had the feeling that she was being one hundred per cent honest,” Pete gets tied up in a relationship he is unable to escape. For Joy it makes perfect sense to lie and deceive Pete in order to keep him giving her money on a regular basis. When Pete finally finds out that his prostitute sweetheart had been lying to him from day one, he tries to forget her, but he just can’t: “There was something inexplicable about the way I felt about Joy…” Joy became Pete’s Achilles heel.
Joy’s character is an intriguing one, although sometimes hard to believe. Raped at an early age by her father, then by her brother, then by her brother’s friends, she sees no choice in making enough money to entertain her violent boyfriend and to meet the demands of her family other than by working as a hooker in one of the many go go bars of Bangkok’s red light district. Although at first she sees in Pete another “ATM machine” – a source of incoming cash –, towards the end of the book she wishes to settle down with him and stop working as a prostitute: “I was tired of supporting my family, tired of all the demands they kept making on me, tired of my friends asking for money. I wanted to leave Thailand, I wanted to start my life again.” Too bad it was too late.
Stephen Leather’s Private Dancer is an easy read, with short sections, each presenting the story as it is seen through the eyes of the different characters that litter the novel. I would have liked to read more about what was on Joy’s mind and less of what the other expats had to say about the Thai go go bar scene. However, especially while I was reading the first half of the book, I had to put it down on several occasions and find reading pleasure elsewhere: the drama was at times too much to bear.
But, there’s a twist in the tail and, although towards the end the narrative kind of loses focus, the message of the book is clear: you’re never going to win an argument with the Thais. Unfortunately, the book doesn’t make justice to the millions of ‘normal’ Thai women who live a decent life, and keep away from drugs, orgies and prostitution. Private Dancer has a brilliant cover (photograph by Paul Owen), which suggest exactly what the book is all about.
Ever since it’s first publication in the early 2000s, the book has been a constant bestseller in Thailand and Southeast Asia. Private Dancer is available for download on the author’s website, but the download doesn’t have the Epilogue that tells the reader what happens to all the characters. Stephen Leather has published many other books, among which Confessions of a Bangkok Private Eye.

I feel a need to disagree with you about the meaning and the relevance of this book. I think the book is a very good one to read for anyone travelling first time to Thailand or any other Asian country for that matter. Yes, the story itself is built around prostitution and Western men taking advantage of the girls there but I see the meaning of the book lying far more deeper than that. You can see it in the way Pete and Joy comment the developments in their relationships and how despite good intentions a common understanding is not found.
Perhaps the reader needs to have an Anglo-Saxon or Thai mentality so that it could be understood what keeps going wrong on both sides: Pete keeps being stupid and naive because he assumes Joy has similar moral norms than the Western girls and the same applies to Joy having strong ideas about the roles of men and women which clearly don’t apply on Pete. Hence, the object of the book is to illustrate the underlying differences between two cultures. Stephen Leather has written many other books situated in Asia and perhaps this popular topic was chosen only to get as much publicity for the book as possible. Well chosen topic it was as the book gained over 40 000 readers worldwide already when it was published only in the Internet.

Hi, I absolutely loved this book. You can adapt this book to your life; real life situations. You can use this book to your own advantage. You can pick up tips and gain knowledge from reading this book. Not just for sex tourists. Not just for going to Bangkok. What a fantastic book.
Stephen Leather Bangkok Private Eye – my next read.
A great read and it fast became a classic to add to anyone’s collection of all things about Thailand to read. I’ve been privileged to have been selected to read the first draft of a soon to be released 2019 novel, ‘Memoirs of a Butterfly’ by J. Darrell Hurington. A new and unknown Novalist to the rhetoric. Having only got halfway through it, I’ve put it on the back burner to re-read Private Dancer again, as it ignited the first time I couldn’t put it down until I read it cover to cover over a day or 2.
Many can take away from reading either of these with their own interpretation and ‘cultural’ learnings. But Private Dancer will always conjure up within me the many ways in which it resonated with my own experiences and I look and hope, in fact I know already that the writings within Memoirs of a Butterfly will do more of the same, as it’ll be touted, so I’ve be told, as Private Dancer on steroids and I’ve only got 15,000 more words to read! Watch this space!

He gives her money and helps her survive but she in turn uses him. She is already with Thai man and uses the money she receives to keep him happy. The novel is told by each character along the way and it is intriguing to see how each person feels and thinks about what is going on at that time. This is particularly prevalent to the different cultures and their priorities. A good solid read and I felt that a little stronger finish to the novel would have made a big difference to my personal opinion.

When I searched for books based in Thailand on the internet, Private Dancer came up many times. I was thrilled when I found out that this book was available as free download on the authors site. A printed version of the book is now available but the author has not taken down the link for this one. Anyway, I started this book when we went on a vacation to Pattaya, Thailand for the new year. What a great insight it was into the world of this so-called couples I saw around. The entire tourist area in Pattaya is filled with bars and sleaze that is usually associated with it. There are similar areas in Bangkok that are famous, viz. Nana Plaza, Patpong and a couple of others. Private Dancer is set in and around these areas. Pete moves to Thailand from London for work. He gets involved with a bar girl and prostitute Joy and is naive enough to think it’s love. He does everything for her and she in turn is using him, as bar girls do, to get money out of him. She also has a Thai boyfriend who Pete doesn’t know about. This book provides a lot of insight into these white men/bar girl relationships. In a way, it’s the kind of book a man should read before coming to Thailand and getting involved with these bar girls. The writer has a very interesting way of telling a story. We get to know about story and the various characters from the characters themselves. So there are a lot of viewpoints in this-Joy, her sister, Pete’s friends but most of all Pete. It’s refreshing and although there isn’t much difference in the tone of the voices, there is a difference in their situations. Since this book is written mostly from the prospective of guys, most of whom are in Thailand for the sleaze, you get a different perspective of bar girls than you would from other people, or woman for that matter. Obviously, the bars and the night life is not what Thailand is all about but it can’t be denied that it is a very small yet prominent part of it. Read it for getting to know a world you’ll probably never get to know up-close or simply for entertainment.

This is a very satisfying book and well worth the $5+ I spent for it. The author warned me it was more of a lad's book but since I am not much of a "lady", I read it anyway. Get ready to step into an alternate universe where anyone can be bought for the price of a cinema ticket, beautiful Asian ladies and lady-boys (aka katoeys) abound and everyone is playing a game on the board known as Life. Pete falls for drop-dead beautiful Joy but she isn't what she seems. Like that is a surprise. Homegirl pl

Well done, Mr. Leather; I look forward to diving in many more of your gorgeous novels. Us Yanks don't know what we have been missing from not discovering this awesome British writer. Love it! It's appalling that there are many western men who become naively retarded after they falling under the power of the Orient (the girls) and seem to completely lose all sense and logic. Are we really that good? Or are they such losers in their own countries they are intoxicated with the attention the power of their dollars (and sadly not their personality) can summon in less developing dollar hungry Asian countries.

Sawadeekap! I think this book gives a really good view on Thai bar girls and farangs comming to Thailand to score a Thai girl. What i loved the most about the book is that you really get a good view from both sides of the culture and thoughts. A must read for anybody who wants to visit Thailand. And a must read for everybody who has visited Thailand.
