In this article, you will learn the difference between the Public network and Private network and their privileges. We will also show you how to change from one network to another through your Windows 11 settings menu.
On a private network, Windows 11 network discovery features are enabled by default. It means that it will be easier for you to see other devices on the network, and those devices can also find your computer easily.
This allows for easy file sharing and use other networked features. For instance, the Public folder of one computer can easily be accessed without the need for password or other permissions. This makes sharing of media files easier.
You use the Private network profile if you have full access to the network such as your home or office network. You can do so with both LAN or Wi-Fi connection.
In a public network, like those in coffee shops, while your device is connected to it, you don’t want other users to see your device let alone access your files and other data. So Windows turned off discovery features by default the moment you choose this profile.
Your computer won’t appear to other devices on the network and won’t try to discover them. Windows assumes that public networks are full of other people’s devices you don’t want to connect to, so it uses different network settings.
However, if a computer connected to the local network enabled network discovery, other users who try to access it may need a password to be able to do so.
That’s the reason why when your computer connects to a new network, it will prompt you immediately if you want to use the Public or Private network profile.
When you first connected to a Wi-Fi network, you may have chosen to use the Public profile, which disables all network discovery features. Fortunately, Windows allows you to change the profile from public to private, and vice versa.
In this section, we will assume that you’ve chosen to use the Public profile when you connected to a Wi-Fi network. So we will change it to private. Here’s how you do that:
Step 1: Right-click on the Windows icon on the taskbar to pull up the options menu.
Step 2. Look for and click Settings to open the Settings app.
Step 3: At left pane, look for Network & internet and click on it.
Step 4: Click Wi-Fi on the right pane.
Step 5: Click the name of the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to.
Step 6: Under Network profile type , click Private to select it.
Immediately after that, the Wi-Fi network profile will be changed from public to private. However, if you chose private and want to change it to public, you just have to do the same but select Public instead.
Just like WiFi networks, you can also change the network profile of your wired connection to either public or private in Windows 11. Here’s how you do it:
Step 1: Right-click on the Windows icon on the taskbar to pull up the options menu.
Step 2. Look for and click Settings to open the Settings app.
Step 3: At left pane, look for Network & internet and click on it.
Step 4: Click Ethernet on the right pane.
Step 5: Under the Network profile type, click Private to select it.
Once changed, file sharing as well as printer sharing will be enabled and all network discovery features can be used.
You don’t need to change any internet settings for the network adapter when switching from public to private or vice versa. The same fact is also applicable to your WiFi network connection.
Basically, those are the things you need to do to access other computers connected to same network.
Another way to prevent attacks on your computer is making sure both network profiles are firewalled, especially if you have sensitive files and data.
You can choose to disable the firewall for your network and if you really want to do that, you simply have to navigate to your network connection and then click Configure firewall and security settings and then change the firewall settings for your network.
Under the Advanced network settings menu, you can disable the network adapters of your computer, monitor the data usage of your apps, view your Hardware and connection properties, as well as reset your network. Here’s how you access it:
Step 1: Right-click on the Windows icon on the taskbar to pull up the options menu.
Step 2. Look for and click Settings to open the Settings app.
Step 3: At left pane, look for Network & internet and click on it.
Step 4: Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click Advanced network settings .
Step 5: Under the Network adapters section, you can disable any of your connection by clicking on the Disable button.
If you’ve changed some Windows settings including your Internet settings but encountered some network connection issues, don’t worry because Windows now allows you to bring all the network settings back to their default configuration.
You can also use the same procedure if you’re having some browsing issues with your computer, or having some other wireless network connection problems such as Bluetooth issues. Here’s what you should do to fix network issues:
Once the network reset is finished, restart your computer to refresh the memory.
Some Windows settings and all network configuration will be brought back to their default values when the computer boots up.

Starting in Windows 11, administrators have new options to deploy apps to devices. The Microsoft Store will continue to allow users to install public and retail apps.
The Company Portal app is the private app repository for organizations and enterprises. It supports more app types and scenarios.
When the Company Portal app is installed, users open it, and see the apps your organization makes available. Users select an app, and install it.
This article discusses the Company Portal app installation options, adding organization apps, and more.
The Company Portal app is included with Microsoft Endpoint Manager. Endpoint Manager is a Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application manager (MAM) provider. It help manages your devices, and manage apps on your devices.
If you're not managing your devices using an MDM provider, the following resources may help you get started:
To install the Company Portal app, you have some options:
Use Microsoft Endpoint Manager : Endpoint Manager includes Microsoft Intune (cloud) and Configuration Manager (on-premises). With both services, you can add Microsoft Store apps, like the Company Portal app. Once added, you create an app policy that deploys and installs the Company Portal app to your devices.
This option is preferred, and is the most scalable, especially if you have many devices. When you create the app policy, the policy can be deployed to many users and many devices simultaneously. Admins can also use reporting to make sure the app is installed on organization-managed devices.
On co-managed devices, which are managed by Microsoft Intune + Configuration Manager together, the Company Portal app shows your Intune apps and your Configuration Manager apps. So, all apps are shown in one place.
When the Company Portal app is installed from the Microsoft Store app, by default, it's automatically updated. Users can also open the Microsoft Store app, go to the Library , and check for updates.
Use Windows Autopilot : Windows Autopilot automatically provisions devices, registers them in your Azure AD organization (tenant), and gets them ready for production. If you're purchasing new devices, then we recommend using Windows Autopilot to preconfigure the devices, and get them ready for use.
In the Endpoint Manager admin center , you add the Company Portal app from the Microsoft Store. Once it's added, the app can be included in your Windows Autopilot deployment. When the device turns on and is getting ready, the Company Portal app is also installed, before users sign in.
When the Company Portal app is installed from the Microsoft Store app, by default, it's automatically updated. Users can also open the Microsoft Store app, go to the Library , and check for updates.
Use the Microsoft Store : The Company Portal app is available in the Microsoft Store, and can be downloaded by your users. Users open the Microsoft Store app on their device, search for Company Portal , and install it. When it's installed, users might be prompted to sign in with their organization account ( user@contoso.com ). When the app opens, they see a list of approved organization apps that can be installed.
This option requires users to install the Company Portal app themselves. If you have many users, the recommended approach is to deploy the Company Portal app using Endpoint Manager or using Windows Autopilot.
When the Company Portal app is installed from the Microsoft Store app, by default, it's automatically updated. Users can also open the Microsoft Store, go to the Library , and check for updates. Within the Company Portal app, they can use the update feature to get app fixes and feature updates on the organization apps you added.
Many organizations customize the Company Portal app to include their specific information. In the Endpoint Manager admin center , you can customize the Company Portal app. For example, you can add a brand logo, include support information, add self-service device actions, and more.
When you add an app in the Endpoint Manager admin center , there's a Show this as a featured app in the Company Portal setting. Be sure you use this setting.
On co-managed devices (Microsoft Intune + Configuration Manager together), your Configuration Manager apps can also be shown in the Company Portal app. For more information, see Use the Company Portal app on co-managed devices .
When the apps are shown, users can select and download the apps on their devices. You can add Microsoft Store apps, web apps, Microsoft 365 apps, LOB apps, Win32 apps, and sideload apps. For more information on adding apps to the Endpoint Manager admin center, see:
If you use a third party or partner MDM provider, be sure to configure the settings that list your apps in the Company Portal app.

Unfortunately, DuckDuckGo Browser is only available on mobile platforms . Until its desktop browser gets released, you can install its extension called “ DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials ” in your web browser. It blocks third-party trackers, forces websites to use encrypted connections, and does more.

LibreWolf is a private web browser that is based on Mozilla Firefox. It has been designed to be faster, more secure, and efficient than other browsers.
It offers better protection against fingerprinting and other cross-site tracking mechanisms along with other privacy and security feature improvements.
LibreWolf Browser removes all telemetry features, including data collection , experiments, and other annoyances, along with anti-freedom features like DRM. It also includes uBlock Origin that blocks ads, trackers, and malicious scripts and websites , making your browsing experience a better and faster one.

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Windows being the successor of the now-retired Internet Explorer. Though the original Edge Browser created by Microsoft was far from being a private browser, the new Chromium-based Edge Browser can be configured for privacy , contrary to common belief.
Microsoft Edge has an extensive menu of privacy settings that allow you to block cookies, disable location services, and other features that could give away your information. It includes tracking protection with three levels: Basic, Balanced, and Strict and supports Secure DNS, making your browsing secure.

Opera Browser is a fast, efficient, and secure browser that provides you with all the tools to browse the Internet conveniently. Ideal for getting things done without distractions, it comes with built-in ad blocking technology, which allows you to block annoying ads.
Moreover, Opera Browser has a built-in no-logging VPN service , with which you can browse anonymously on the Internet. This means that your IP address will be hidden from anyone who tries to track your location or identity. Also, it blocks ads and trackers by default, like most browsers on this list.
