Privacy Policy for Tab Limbo
Tab LimboLast updated: October 28, 2026
Tab Limbo ("the Extension") is a browser extension for Google Chrome that automatically closes inactive tabs after a user-configured time limit and saves them to a searchable local library.
1. Summary
- No developer servers or telemetry: We do not operate any backend servers, analytics, tracking scripts, or telemetry. We never see, collect, or have access to your browsing history, tabs, settings, or API keys.
- Local-first storage: All closed tabs, timestamps, categories, summaries, and settings are stored strictly on your own device using Chrome's local storage (
chrome.storage.local). - Optional Bring-Your-Own-Key (BYOK) AI features: If you choose to enter your own Anthropic API key in Settings, the Extension sends the titles and URLs of your closed tabs directly from your browser to Anthropic (
https://api.anthropic.com) to categorize your tabs and answer your search questions.
2. What Data the Extension Handles
- Open Tab Metadata (Local Only): To determine when an inactive tab should be closed, the Extension checks the URL (http:// or https://), title, active status, pinned status, and audio-playing status of open tabs, along with the timestamp when each tab was opened or last viewed. The Extension never reads the body text, form inputs, passwords, or cookies inside any web page.
- Closed Tab Library (Local Storage): When Tab Limbo closes a tab, it saves the tab's URL, title, domain, open timestamp, and close timestamp to your local library (
chrome.storage.local). If AI categorization is used, the assigned category, subcategory, and short summary are also stored locally inchrome.storage.local. - Extension Settings & API Key (Local Storage): Your preferences (auto-close timeout, timer mode, pinned/audio rules, never-close domain list, model name, and optional Anthropic API key) are stored locally in
chrome.storage.localon your device.
3. How Data Is Used and Transmitted
- Without an API key: No data ever leaves your browser. Auto-closing tabs, saving tabs to the library, keyword search, and filtering by domain, category, or date work entirely on your device.
- With an Anthropic API key (Optional - Auto-Categorization): When enabled, the Extension sends batches of uncategorized closed tabs (containing only id, title, and url, plus your existing category/subcategory names) directly from your browser to
https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messagesusing your API key. - With an Anthropic API key (Optional - Natural-Language Search): When you submit a question in the Ask bar, the Extension sends your question and up to 600 entries from your closed-tab library (id, close date, domain, category/subcategory, title, and summary) directly from your browser to
https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messagesusing your API key. - Requests to Anthropic are governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy and Commercial Terms of Service.
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
- We do not sell, rent, trade, or transfer your user data to any third parties.
- We do not use or transfer user data for serving advertisements, profiling, or determining creditworthiness or lending.
- Data is only transmitted to Anthropic (api.anthropic.com) when you explicitly provide your own API key and use the AI categorization or natural-language search features.
5. Data Retention and Deletion
- All library entries and settings remain in your browser's local storage (
chrome.storage.local) until you delete them. - You can delete individual tabs at any time using the Delete or Reopen buttons in the Tab Limbo library.
- You can remove your API key at any time in the Extension's Settings dialog.
- Uninstalling the Tab Limbo extension from Chrome automatically and permanently deletes all locally stored library entries, timestamps, settings, and API keys from your browser.
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy
If we update the Extension in a way that changes how data is handled (for example, adding support for additional optional AI providers), we will update this Privacy Policy and the "Last updated" date above prior to releasing the update.
