Privacy Policy for Clip Lens

Last updated: February 21, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Clip Lens ("we", "us", or "the App") collects, uses, and discloses information about you. We believe in privacy by design. The App is designed to process your data locally on your device by default, with explicit cloud processing only when utilizing advanced AI features.

1. Data Collection and Processing: Local by Default

For standard usage, Clip Lens does not collect, store, or transmit your personal data to any external servers managed by us.

  • Standard Image and OCR Data: The basic scanning and text recognition (OCR) process, as well as QR/Barcode reading, happens entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework. We do not send your photos or the scanned text to any cloud server for processing in standard mode.
  • Scanned History & Media: Any text, codes, photos of the scan, or locations you save in the App are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. (Note: Accessing your scan history requires an active premium subscription, but the data itself remains on your device).

2. "+AI MODE" and Cloud Processing

Clip Lens offers an advanced "+AI MODE" feature, which utilizes cloud-based generative artificial intelligence to analyze and recognize complex data.

  • Data Transmission: When you explicitly select and use the "+AI MODE", the specific photo you are scanning is securely transmitted to Google (via Firebase and Gemini AI) for processing.
  • Disclaimer of Liability for Third-Party Processing: By using the "+AI MODE", you acknowledge and agree that your data (the scanned photo) is being processed by Google. Google bears full and sole responsibility for the handling, processing, and safeguarding of the user data once it is transmitted to their services. We, the developers of Clip Lens, explicitly disclaim any and all liability for how Google may store, process, or utilize this data in the future. For more information, please refer to Google's official Privacy Policy.

3. iCloud Synchronization

If you have iCloud enabled on your device, your locally stored scanned history is automatically synced across your devices using Apple’s CloudKit services.

  • This data is stored in your private iCloud container.
  • We (the developer) have no access to this data.
  • The data is encrypted and managed according to Apple’s iCloud Security and Privacy Overview.

4. Third-Party Libraries and Frameworks

To provide you with a seamless experience, we use the following third-party frameworks:

  • Firebase (Google): Used for remote configuration, basic app logic, and routing the AI requests exclusively for the "+AI MODE".
  • PhoneNumberKit: Used solely for validating and formatting phone numbers detected during the scanning process. This processing is performed entirely locally on your device.
  • Ink: Used locally on your device to render Markdown text correctly. It does not collect or transmit personal data.

5. App Permissions

To function, the App requires the following permissions:

  • Camera: Used exclusively to scan text and codes in real-time. Video data is processed in temporary memory and is not recorded unless you use the capture feature.
  • Location (Optional): Used only if you choose to attach a geographical location to a saved scan. This location data is saved entirely locally.

6. GDPR Compliance (EU Users)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

  • Data Controller: You are the controller of your own data. The App acts as a tool for local processing.
  • Data Processors: Apple Inc. acts as the processor for data stored in iCloud. When using "+AI MODE", Google acts as the processor for the specific image data transmitted for AI analysis.
  • Since we do not collect or have access to your personal data on our own servers, there is no data for us to delete, rectify, or export upon request. You have full control over your data within the App (e.g., deleting history items).

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. If we introduce features that change how we handle data, we will notify you by updating the date at the top of this policy.
