LONDON -- Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have a May wedding at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel, Kensington Palace announced Tuesday.
Windsor Castle, west of London, is one of Queen Elizabeth II's main residences . The 15th-century chapel is as historic but more intimate than Westminster Abbey, where Harry's older brother William married Kate Middleton in 2011.
Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, and American actress Markle have been dating for about a year and a half . They announced their engagement on Monday.
Tuesday's announcement said that the queen would attend the wedding, which will be paid for by the royal family. The exact date was not revealed.
The announcement added that Markle will be baptized in the Church of England and will become a British citizen, although that will take some time.
The engagement of Prince Harry and Markle dominated newspaper front pages and morning news shows in Britain on Tuesday, as royal-watchers awaited the details.
Markle's future sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge, who is married to Prince William, said she was "absolutely thrilled."
"It's such exciting news," Kate said as she visited a museum in London. "It's a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment."
Prince Charles' wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, said she was "delighted" her stepson was marrying the U.S. actress.
"America's loss is our gain," she said.
Markle's divorced status would once have barred her from marrying the prince in church. Harry's father Prince Charles, who is heir to the British throne, married Camilla in a low-key civil ceremony in 2005 because both bride and groom were divorced.
Newspapers hailed news of the engagement as a breath of fresh air and symbol of a modernizing monarchy.
The Daily Telegraph said in an editorial: "A divorced, mixed-race Hollywood actress who attended a Roman Catholic school is to marry the son of the next king. Such a sentence could simply not have been written a generation ago."
The Daily Mail, which devoted its first 17 pages to the engagement, said the couple would give the royal family "the injection of vigor and exuberance it so desperately needs."
In the couple's first joint interview Monday, 33-year-old Harry said Markle immediately fit in with his family . He said when she visited Buckingham Palace to meet the queen, "the corgis took to her straight away."
The ex-soldier prince and the 36-year-old star of TV show "Suits" revealed that Harry proposed over a roast chicken dinner at his London home, after months in which they tried to keep their long-distance relationship out of the public eye.
"Trying to roast a chicken and it was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic," Markle said. "He got on one knee."
She added that she said "yes" so quickly that Harry "barely" got to finish proposing and had to ask, "Can I give you the ring?" They said the two of them were alone for the special moment at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace.
Clearly happy in each other's company, the beaming couple recounted how they met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, and immediately clicked.
"The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was sort of confirmation to me that everything, all the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect," Harry said. "It was this beautiful woman just sort of literally tripped and fell into my life. I fell into her life."

Prince Harry thought that the best way to protect Meghan Markle from fierce media attention while they were still dating was to marry her as soon as possible, it has been claimed.
A new book written by Tina Brown , author of 2007 bombshell biography of the life and death of the Princess of Wales, The Diana Chronicles , says that the Duke of Sussex thought that the answer to keeping Meghan from prying eyes was to get her police protection through marriage .
Harry and Meghan first met in 2016 and were engaged before the end of 2017. They married on 19 May 2018.
Brown’s explosive new book, titled The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor , claims to lift the lid on how the other members of the royal family felt about Harry’s blossoming relationship with Meghan.
Having spoken to more than 120 royal insiders over the course of two years, the author writes that while most of the family – including Prince Charles and the Queen – appeared to like Meghan, it was Prince William who had the biggest reservations.
It was claimed that Harry’s brother was “nervous” about how quickly the couple were falling in love because of how much Meghan would have to give up if they were to marry, including her acting career and her life in the US.
William was also concerned the duchess would not have enough time to create a life for herself in the UK and make new friends.
A former Palace adviser told Brown that William’s biggest worry was for his younger brother’s “mental fragility” and that he wouldn’t be able to cope with all the “scorching scrutiny and harassment” that Meghan would come to endure.
But according to the book, Harry’s response to William’s fears was that the most effective way to protect Meghan would be to marry her “as quickly as possible” so that she would receive the same police protection that he did while he was still a working royal.
However, the negative media attention on Meghan only worsened in the months leading up to the wedding and after it.
Brown pointed to a news item published on 4 November 2016 by The Sun with the headline “Harry’s Girl on Pornhub” as a particular source of anguish for the couple.
A friend of Meghan’s told Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, the authors of Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family , that she felt “sick to her stomach” when she saw the headline.
The Sun was forced to apologise in 2017 for publishing the story and clarified that Meghan had “never been involved with such content and had no idea that the video clip had been published illegally on this website”.
In early 2020, it was announced that Harry and Meghan would step down from their roles as senior royals, relinquishing their HRH titles and becoming known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
A year later, in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, the couple revealed that they had experienced racism and a lack of mental health support during their time as working royals in Buckingham Palace.
Harry and Meghan also lost their publicly-funded police protection in the UK when they stepped down.
Earlier this year, Harry filed a claim for judicial review against the British government’s decision not to let him personally pay for police protection for himself and his family while in the UK.
The Independent has contacted a representative for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry added a number of personal touches to their royal wedding day in 2018, including the song that Meghan walked down the aisle to, which was chosen by the groom himself!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary on Thursday, opened up about their wedding music for a special exhibition at Windsor Castle in the fall of 2018, including George Frideric Handel's "Eternal Source of Light Divine," which was performed by Welsh soprano Elin Manahan Thomas ( listen here ) as Meghan walked down the aisle on their big day.
"[It] was actually Harry's choice entirely and I think a really beautiful piece," Meghan revealed in a personal recording for the exhibit. "I can retrace that entire walk down the aisle listening to it. It really is so special for us, and I think it's one of those things we'll treasure forever."
Prince Harry , who said he was looking for "something completely different" when he chose the song, added: "Wherever we are, whatever we're doing, we can close our eyes, listen to that music and take ourselves straight back to that moment, it's a beautiful thing for both of us."
Meghan entered St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle trailed by her bridal party (including Prince George and Princess Charlotte !), walking the first half of the aisle on her own before Prince Charles took her arm and walked the bride to the front of the chapel, where his son was waiting.
Meghan, 40, and Prince Harry, 37, traditionally mark their wedding anniversary by exchanging sentimental gifts .
"They love to do their own take on traditional wedding gifts," a source previously told PEOPLE. "The first anniversary was paper, and Meghan wrote out the wedding speech and had it framed for him."
On their second anniversary in 2020, "they both gave each other gifts based on 'cotton.' Undoubtedly, it was a very creative and romantic gesture as all their gifts are to one another," the source added.
Prince Harry and Meghan are settling into life in Montecito, California, since their move in 2020. They are now parents of two: son Archie Harrison, who celebrated his third birthday earlier this month, and daughter Lilibet Diana, who will turn 1 on June 4.
The family of four is planning a trip to the U.K. in a couple of weeks to celebrate Queen Elizabeth 's Platinum Jubilee, marking her historic 70-year reign. The visit will mark Lili's first time traveling to her dad's homeland.

The news came shortly after Queen Elizabeth , 96, announced that only working members of the royal family will appear for the traditional Buckingham Palace balcony appearance as part of Trooping the Colour, the monarch's annual public birthday celebration.
Prince Harry and Meghan will not be part of the appearance . Harry's uncle Prince Andrew , who is no longer a working royal following his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will also not be included on the balcony.
