Amsterdam Gay Pride is on Friday 5 August, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August 2022* .
In the main pride weekend with street parties and main dance parties take place. Pride festival is last week of July till 7 August 2022.
For now we present the pride program mostly based on previous years. We will update the site when more information is available.
Amsterdam Pride is one of the greatest gay events in the world. You will find street parties all weekend long, the best massive circuit parties with thousands of guys and of course the famous Canal Parade through the historic Amsterdam Unesco canals on.
Gay pride is one of the most busy weekends of the year in Amsterdam. Make sure you book your hotel early!
Here are some of the agenda highlights where to drink, dance and party during the Pride Weekend.
Amsterdam is in the top 5 of most popular Europe travel destinations. Plan in advance if you want to stay for a reasonable price in the city center.
The center of Amsterdam is Dam square. Stay in a radius of about 2 km and all sightseeing, restaurants and gay nightlife is on walking distance.
Some large cheaper hotels are located outside highway A10 (which surrounds the city). But keep in mind trams and metro stop running after midnight, and taxis and Uber can be hard to find and expensive (6-9 km drive).
The highlight of the Amsterdam Gay Pride is the Canal Parade. The parade will start around 12:30 and will take all afternoon. See here a map of the route and the participating boats.
Amsterdam will be full of gay parties in the main pride weekend. Here you can find an overview of where and when you drink and dance and a day to day schedule of all party highlights.
The main gay events and parties all take place in the city center of Amsterdam. August is high tourist season, so make your hotel reservations early. If you visit for a day, please get yourself informed about traffic, public transport and busy areas.
Dates for Amsterdam Pride 2023 still have to be announced. But in the past 20+ years it has always been the weekend of the first Saturday of August.
So our prediction is that Amsterdam Gay Pride will be from Friday 4 August 2023 until Sunday 6 August 2023. This date still has to be confirmed!
Planning to watch the parade from the side of the canals on your own boat? You need to buy a permit for this. Also some more new regulations are in place. Amplified music is not allowed on ships not participating in the official parade.

Hi! Are you going to visit Amsterdam or its area and would you like to answer a few questions about your trip?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amsterdam Pride , Amsterdam Gay Pride or Pride Amsterdam is a citywide gay - festival held annually at the center of Amsterdam during the first weekend of August. The festival attracts several hundred-thousand visitors each year and is one of the largest publicly held annual events in the Netherlands .

Amsterdam Pride was first organized in 1996, meant as a festival to celebrate freedom and diversity. It was therefore not like many other Gay Prides , which began as demonstrations for equal rights. The latter purpose served another event, which is called Pink Saturday (Dutch: Roze Zaterdag ) since 1979 and is held in a different city each year since 1981.

The peak of the festival is during the Canal Parade , a parade of boats of large variety on the first Saturday of August, which usually goes from Westerdok over the Prinsengracht, the Amstel river, the Zwanenburgwal and the Oudeschans to Oosterdok . In 2014, the first Jewish boat and the first Moroccan boat participated in the Amsterdam Pride Canal Parade. [1] [2] [3] Dana International was on the Jewish boat, as well as the Fokkens twins (Louise Fokkens and Martine Fokkens), who are famous in the Netherlands for having worked 50 years as sex workers in Amsterdam's Red Light District before their retirement earlier in 2014. [4] Marianne van Praag, a Reform rabbi from The Hague, was the only rabbi aboard the Jewish boat. [1]

The Amsterdam Gay Pride usually spans a week of various activities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, including exhibitions, cultural and sport events. There are also street parties in the streets where there's a concentration of gay bars , like Reguliersdwarsstraat , Zeedijk , Warmoesstraat and alongside Amstel. On Rembrandtplein there's a closing party on the Sunday after the Canal Parade. [5]

In 2015, the board of the Amsterdam Gay Pride took a different approach towards the name of the festival. The ProGay foundation, which founded the festival, argued that the term 'Gay' did not sufficiently express the diversity amongst the participants of the Pride. The president of the board, Irene Hemelaar, confirmed that the change would be happening, but the name change only came through in 2017. By changing the name of the festival they hoped to encourage other prides to become more inclusive in their annual events. The Netherland Police Units participate in a yearly event that illustrate the inclusion of the Netherlands. The Netherlands' Police Department wear pink uniforms during the festival to emphasise the department's support in the LGBT community. [6]

In 2016, the EuroPride changed its community name to LGBTI, I for intersexual , since it was the first year in which there was an appearance of an intersexual community in the festival's program. Since the Netherlands have learned about the intersexual community, digesting and learning their culture has been their top priority. The name change and the appearance of the 'I' in LGBTI worked to form a more inclusive environment for all people to celebrate their gender and sexuality. [7]

The Netherlands shows a very high level of social acceptance to the LGBT community. Through the years, social acceptance towards LGBT groups has been increasing and the Netherlands received top rankings in several surveys into the attitude towards LGBT groups, relative to a number of other European countries such as Spain, the United Kingdom, etc. The tolerant attitude of different groups of Dutch people can be seen in some aspects of how the public view LGBT people, acceptance of equal rights for LGBT people, the visibility of the LGBT community and construction of networks of LGBT groups. For example, the Netherlands has the highest ranking in support for LGBT groups having the freedom to pursue their desired lifestyles, and feel most comfortable with LGBT political leaders.

The attitude of the Dutch towards lesbians, gays and bisexuals is more open than that towards transgender people. This is also common in other European societies, which is caused by transgender people being less common than the LGB people, and therefore people being more likely to have more LGB friends or acquaintances than transgender friends or acquaintances. In the Netherlands, more than 75% of the interviewees revealed that they had LGB friends and hold a positive stance towards homosexuality while less than 10% of the interviewees revealed that they had transgender friends or acquaintances. The general view of the Dutch Society towards LGBT is positive and people support and are open to promoting the equalities and freedom of LGBT community. [8]

Pride Amsterdam is one of the most popular gay pride celebrations in the world. Thousands come to Amsterdam every year to be part of the magical and colourful celebration that takes place over 9 days and has well over 300 events and activities running across the city.
In 2022 the theme of Pride Amsterdam is My Gender, My Pride. Which in a nutshell means ‘everyone should feel free to be themselves, without an imposed norm from outside’ ( quoted from Pride Amsterdam website ).
Every year it is celebrated at the start of August. In 2022 it starts on 30 July and ends on 9 August 2022.
Most of the events are spread out across the city, so although you will know they are happening, they may not affect the day to day travel, other than more people making their way there. So, you will be able to use whichever form of Amsterdam public transport you prefer (or walk or cycle).
There are though main events which are in the centre of the city which are much bigger, so will draw a lot of crowds and may affect public transport provisions. It’s not recommended to travel by car, especially for the Canal Parade. Amsterdam is not a great city for cars anyway, but during the Canal Parade the entire Prisengracht is car free. You are much better coming in by train if outside of Amsterdam, or walking and using the metro if you are staying in Amsterdam.
There are a few well known key events during the Amsterdam Pride festival.
The Canal Parade runs along the Oosterdok, Nieuwe Herengracht, Amstel, Prisengracht and Westerdok canals. Every year entrants submit their boat concepts and only the best 80 are invited to the world-famous parade. This event is one not be missed with visitors lining the canal edges to enjoy the amazing designs of the boats and carnival atmosphere.
The 2022 Canal Parade starts at 12pm at Oosterdok on Saturday 6 August 2022.
The Pride Walk is held on 30 July 2022 and starts with a demonstration in Dam Square from 11am until 12pm. Then from 12pm the walk takes place until 1pm. The exact route has yet to be confirmed, but you can look for updates on the Pride Amsterdam site.
Vondelparc, a beautiful and large park in the museum quarter of Amsterdam (close to Van Gogh Museum ) hosts Pride Park on 30 July 2022. From 11am until 10pm, the park will host activities as diverse as open air theatre, sports, arts, Youth Pride, multiple perfomances and much more. The exact schedule of events will be confirmed nearer the time.
Hosted at Dam Square , the Pride Amsterdam closing party takes place on 7 August 2022. The event is scheduled to run from 2pm until 10pm.
The main events draw crowds in their thousands, but there are also lots of other events happening throughout the festival and throughout Amsterdam. These include open air cinemas, nightclubs, theatre, photo exhibitions and competitions, music, pride at the beach (Zandvoort), exhibitions, street parties, comedy, and even a canal swim in the Amstel.
You can see a list of all the planned events at the Pride Amsterdam website.
Amsterdam is a compact city with an excellent public transport network. It has buses, the famous trams , the canals and a metro (underground/subway). However, you’ll also find a lot of people just like to walk from place to place enjoying the beautiful city or use a bike. Whichever transport you prefer, you’ll find it easy to get around Amsterdam.
The reason we say this is because it does not matter too much where you stay in Amsterdam, as it is easy to get from place to place fairly quickly. If you want to experience more than just the festival then staying in central Amsterdam or in the museum district will put you in the heart of the city near a lot of the biggest attractions.
We have a whole section on where to stay in Amsterdam , along with our hotel recommendations for Amsterdam . You can also use our Amsterdam map which lays out some of the biggest tourist attractions, so you can work out what else you might like to see and enjoy whilst visiting.

I love travel and I love Amsterdam. I have been to many places, but Amsterdam is a city that calls me back over and over again. It is compact, beautiful, easy to get around and has so many different attractions that every visit guarantees a new experience.
I know lots of people take short breaks to Amsterdam, so I created this site to help you make the best use of the time you have in this wonderful city. To help you plan (just a little) so that you too can enjoy everything Amsterdam offers and also take a little time out to smell the tulips.
