Adequate is what I would call it
It's better than dvd but it's not great.
You really do lack a lot of detail modern films have. This is an 11 year old transfer which to me resembles something of the early HD DVD transfers. Better than dvd but nothing special. Think 1080i not 1080p
It's £5.98 so well worth the extra cost to buy but don't expect to be amazed by it on your TV!

OK, so the tropes are dated, but, like Dirty Dancing, this is one of THOSE classic romantic movies! It is still a re-write of Pygmalion, but unlike My Fair Lady, I think Vivienne really comes out on top. I think that, for the eighties, this was the first movie to properly address that violence against women was wrong, even if that woman was in a sex profession.
Other than that this does nothing for the Sisterhood. It appeals to a lot of the base desires of 80s teen girls - that some handsome man would come and sweep us off our feet with the promise of beautiful things and entry into elegant society. It think even the most modern millennial female or female identifying person will still clench a bit over the clothes shop scenes. Vivienne (Juliet Roberts) is a delightful and charming heroine who encompasses all of our little girl dreams. I remember saying to my stepmum after watching the movie with my friends when it came out (yes, I know that dates me) "He's (Richard Gere) quite handsome, for an old guy." I chuckle at my young self and still love this movie :D

The chemistry between main protagonists, Richard and Julia are wonderful. Well written script, crispy conversation, and great supporting actors and excellent music, this movie was destined to become super hit classics.
Of course, in real world, this type of love never happens, Thus, humanity always yearn what they cannot attain. Great love story, totally different than AN OFFICER AND GENTLEMAN, but the essential theme is same, the purity of the women catches the hearts of men. All Glory to women all over the world.

Roy Orbison's song Pretty Woman is inseparable from this film, and summarises it exactly, but one has to wait until half way through the film, for the complete version, as the streetwise girl is transformed into an elegant lady.
Julia Roberts has the beauty and talent to make her character Vivian Ward very real; and Richard Gere gives a convincing performance of the money obsessed billionaire Edward Lewis, who is humanised again through his efforts to turn a hooker into a lady, treating his partner and lawyer Philip Stuckey (Ralph Bellamy) very badly because he can not keep pace with his change of heart.
The Film shows intentionally the hipocracy and also the desirability of protocol. The same woman is looked upon with distaste in expensive hotels and stores in streetwise clothes, but ogled and treated like an object of desire and with respect, when wearing high fashion. (It is not the goods, but how you wrap them which makes the difference, in this case wardrobe by Cerruti of Paris )
It would be an outrage of respectability for her to stay in a millionaire's suite as a paid escort, but acceptable as a 'relative' in this case as his niece.
There is compassion beneath the stern exterior of propriety and efficiency, and the hotel manager played by Hector Elizondo, instructs and helps the girl with etiquette and dress sense.
There is an undercurrent of humour also, such as when Vivian squeezes her snail tongues too hard at a dinner, and propells the creature across the room to be caught expertly by a waiter.
Laura Giacomo provides some sad humour as the drug addicted friend of Vivian, Kit De Luca, still in the clutches of a pimp and his organisation.
After misunderstandings Edward encouraged by the hotel manager, travells standing through the sun roof of the limo to Vivian's appartment, and overcomes his fear of heights by climbing the fire escape to propose.
Another high flying feature of the production is the Orchestra conducted by Jazz orientated Marty Paich, who worked with such artists as Mel Torme and Peggy Lee.
There is no 15th Anniversary booklet, and it is only a one disc set, but there is a new audio commentary by Director Gary Marshall, and a track 'Wild Woman Do' by Natalie Cole, plus Featurettes, in the Special Features. The Dolby 5.1 sound is good, and the picture quality beautiful. The language options are English and French, with subtitle options in English and Dutch.

I love this movie, I bought this on VHS tape, when it first came out in 1990. The picture quality no longer shows well, so I now bought it on dvd, I'm really glad I bought this as it includes extras, never seen before part of this movie. Its really great.
