Richard Gere and Julia Roberts had obvious chemistry upon their first meeting; however, Gere was not planning on taking the role. He was on the phone ready to turn down the part when Roberts slid him a Post-it note with the words "please say yes" written on it. He accepted the role right then.
When Vivian finds Edward sleeping, she wears a long white nightgown when she comes in the room. She kisses him and they begin to make love. When Edward pulls her nightgown over her head, it is now a camisole. Actually the mid-length nightgown has spaghetti straps and she removes it herself, with him on top of her, making it hard to see what she removes but it looked like the same garment.
The Director's Cut of "Pretty Woman" features additional dialogue during the first encounter of Edward and Vivian; additonal scenes featuring Carlos the pimp chasing after Vivian for the money Kit owes him; a longer restaurant sequence, and a longer montage of scenes when Edward takes the day off from work to spend more time with Vivian on their last day together.
Such a dream, just you DO NOT think
Obviously similar to Shaw's "Pygmalion", but updated, more modern. A lovely dream, one very old: rescuing a prostitute from the street. (Not in Woody Allen's sickish-moody way.) However, if you wish to dream this one, be sure you do NOT start to think very logically . . . She is healthy, not on drugs, not on alcohol, not even a smoker; no syphilis, no gonorrhea, no AIDS wounds on her legs, nothing, she is just perfectly absolutely healthy. Body and mind. She is not a criminal, not inclined to steal anything, she even values love and dignity more than money. Oh, she has no pimp, who would be the other man (other than Richard Gere) in her life; nobody to protect her from smart types who walk off without paying; the pimp would explode the whole romance instantly. (Instead, a girl friend.) She has a golden soul, full of goodness, and loves art, and feels for art. High-society types around them appear silly, artificial, stuffy. (Different forks.) She is natural. She even was a good student (!) and . . . might be again? She loves to bathe, and half the time we see her happy in the bath tub (which is a powerful signal and symbol for CLEAN, CLEAN; she even sings so super-ultra-charmingly in the bath; she wants to wash off the foolishness of her previous few months of street. And she can do it. But with all those qualities, WHY would she ever become a prostitute in the first place? Don't think, don't think. Just dream, it is lovely.

This red ball gown, which sex worker Vivian Ward ( Julia Roberts ) wears when she goes from duckling to swan in Pretty Woman, has a wow factor that goes unmatched. Designed by Marilyn Vance, the off-the-shoulder, structured, red dress leaves everyone (including Richard Gere 's character, Edward Lewis) in awe.

Could you imagine if the dress had been black, as was originally suggested ?

The one-piece that left little to the imagination has become synonymous with the film and, therefore, ranks high on the list. Her newsboy cap, red coat and thigh-high boots get less recognition but are just as iconic.

Sans blonde wig and with the jacket tied around her waist, the outfit somehow looks cool enough to earn itself its own spot in the ranking.

Someone give this dress (and its matching hat) its own award.

Thinking this white, puff-sleeve dress, white gloves and black hat wouldn't make the list? Let's just say that's a "big mistake! Huge!"

At the end of the film, Vivian wears a plain white tee, black blazer and belted mom jeans, her hair in a black silk scrunchie. You can catch women recreating this classic combo to this day — it's one of our favorites in the film.

After being turned away while shopping, Vivian gets her first Cinderella moment of the film, donning an off-the-shoulder LBD with lace appliqué that sits above her collarbone for a business dinner.

When Vivian walks down Rodeo Drive with Edward in this outfit, she gets the same stares as when she was wearing the one-piece on its own, but we genuinely have to wonder why? A plain white button-down has rarely looked so cute.

This is one hotel robe that we would absolutely be swiping from the room.

Classic but colorful, this is one of Vivian's looks that we don't get to see for long enough on screen — save for two quick shots while she is on a date with Edward —but that we love.

We see this dress very briefly during Vivian's shopping montage, and will always wonder why this flirty number wasn't a winner. Especially with those black ballet flats!

(Check out her iconic red dress on the mannequin, though.)

There's a lot going on here: The white pantyhose, the oversized pinstripes, the sheer sleeves. It looks like something you would wear if you were going to a Goodfellas-themed birthday. Of course, Julia Roberts manages to pull it off.

We see the pinstripe dress again when she convinces the uptight and overworked Edward to take a day off. Her sunglasses make the look, in our opinion.

Sure, Vivian is supposed to learn to be 'ladylike,' but nobody said that she had to age five decades in order to do so!

Fun fact: Julia Roberts was just 21 years old when she filmed this movie.

As we have said, Julia Roberts can pull off anything, but this matching Bermuda short and blazer set is unfortunate compared to the others. Her hair looks great, though!

Pretty Woman is a 1990 American romantic comedy film directed by Garry Marshall , from a screenplay by J. F. Lawton . The film stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere , and features Héctor Elizondo , Ralph Bellamy (in his final performance), Laura San Giacomo , and Jason Alexander in supporting roles. [1]

The film's story centers on Hollywood prostitute Vivian Ward and wealthy businessman Edward Lewis. Vivian is hired to be Edward's escort for several business and social functions, and their relationship develops over the course of her week-long stay with him.

The film's title Pretty Woman is based on the 1964 song " Oh, Pretty Woman " by Roy Orbison . It is the first film on-screen collaboration between Gere and Roberts; their second film, Runaway Bride , was released in 1999.

Originally intended to be a dark cautionary tale about class and prostitution in Los Angeles , the film was re-conceived as a romantic comedy with a large budget. It was widely successful at the box office and was the third-highest-grossing film of 1990 . The film saw the highest number of ticket sales in the US ever for a romantic comedy, [2] with Box Office Mojo listing it as the number-one romantic comedy by the highest estimated domestic tickets sold at 42,176,400, slightly ahead of My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) at 41,419,500 tickets. [3] The film received mixed reviews, though Roberts received a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, which catapulted her to stardom. In addition, screenwriter J. F. Lawton was nominated for a Writers Guild Award and a BAFTA Award .

Edward Lewis, a high-powered corporate raider from New York, buys and dismantles struggling companies, selling off the assets for profit. He wants his girlfriend Jessica to accompany him during a business trip, but fed up with being his "beck and call girl", she breaks up with him. Leaving a business party in the Hollywood Hills , Edward takes his lawyer's Lotus Esprit sports car and accidentally ends up on Hollywood Boulevard in the city's red-light district . There he encounters sex worker Vivian Ward. As he is having difficulties driving a manual transmission car, he pays Vivian to drive him to the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel . Edward then impulsively hires her for the night, and despite some awkwardness, finds her charming and gets on well with her.

The next day, Edward asks Vivian to play his girlfriend that week at a series of business events he is attending while attempting a takeover of shipbuilder James Morse's company. Edward offers Vivian $3,000 and a new wardrobe for six days. Vivian excitedly accepts, but when she attempts to go shopping on Rodeo Drive , she is turned away by the rude, snobbish saleswomen and turns to Barney, the hotel's manager, for help. He teaches her proper etiquette and arranges for her to buy a cocktail dress for an important business dinner that evening. At the dinner meeting Edward introduces Vivian to James and his grandson David; the latter is being groomed to take over the company after his grandfather dies. The business meeting does not go well and James and David are unimpressed by Edward wanting to buy and sell off their company. Edward is impressed by Vivian's transformation and opens up to her, revealing details about his personal and business life, including his turbulent relationship with his late father, Carter, from whom he was estranged at the time of his death.

When Edward's attorney, Phillip, suspects Vivian is a corporate spy after seeing her talking to David at a polo game, Edward reveals how they met. Phillip later crudely propositions Vivian for her services after Edward is finished with her. Vi
