Debut author Darby Kane thrills with this twisty domestic suspense novel that asks one central question: shouldn't a dead husband stay dead? Lila Ridgefield lives in an idyllic college town, but not everything is what it seems. Lila isn't what she seems. A student vanished months ago. Now , Lila's husband, Aaron, is also missing. At first these cases are treated as horrible coincidences until it's discovered the student is really the third of three unexplained disappearances over the last few years. The police are desperate to find the connection , if there even is one. Little do they know they might be stumbling over only part of the truth.... With the small town in an uproar, everyone is worried about the whereabouts of their beloved high school teacher. Everyone except Lila , his wife. She's definitely confused about her missing husband but only because she was the last person to see his body, and now it's gone.

This was the first book I’ve read by the author; she is very talented! I received this book from Amazon on a Sunday and furnished on the Tuesday; I just could not stop reading it. It was not a filled with vulgarities, horrible sordid details of killing but was intelligently written similar to following an investigator around bro dolce a crime. Lots of twists and turns, keeps you guessing and definitely reflects the work of a former trial attorney turned writer!! Get it and plan on a fast read in the middle of your busy life!! Just took me into another world!!

This book kept me guessing (incorrectly) through almost every page. I loved all the characterizations, from Lila herself to Aaron, Jared and especially Ginny. Great read!

Great mystery with a lot of twists. The story moves fast and you won't want to put the book down.

Pretty Little Wife is Darby Kane’s debut thriller novel and what a debut it was! It follows Lila Ridgefield and her husband Aaron Payne who live in a small town in New York. They seem to have a great life together. Lila is a real estate broker who works mostly from home, while Aaron is a beloved High School teacher and coach. He has never missed a day of school so when he does not show up one day, everyone is concerned and worried. Lila is concerned and worried as well, but for very different reasons. When the book opens, Lila discovers some disturbing videos of her husband and some of the teen girls he coaches. Aaron lies and makes it seems like Lila is in the wrong for blowing this out of proportion when she confronts him, so she decides to take matters into her own hands to stop Aaron from hurting anymore children. She kills Aaron and leaves him in his car at the school. If he’s now missing, where did his car and his body go? If he’s not really dead like she thought he was, then he’ll be coming for Lila and she needs to be prepared. The book then jumps ahead to where the investigation starts. Not only the police investigation, but also Lila’s. And not only do we have the mystery of what happened to Aaron, but there are also excerpts of a podcast that is investigating the disappearance of 3 college women from the surrounding Ithaca area. Coincidence or are they somehow related? As the investigation into Aaron’s disappearance continues, the police uncover more than they ever thought they would. The lead detective on the case is Ginny Davis, and she is sure that Lila is responsible for whatever happened to her husband. But trying to prove it is harder than she thinks. Lila is smart and has covered her tracks, well except for the missing dead body (lol). I loved the game of cat and mouse between these two women. They are both smart and determined and neither is going to be outsmarted by the other. This book had so many twists and turns that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, Darby Kane threw in a curve ball and took it in another direction. By the time I got to the end I was like “Whoa! Wait! What?! Holy Crap!” I also thought the author did an excellent job in writing and fleshing out the characters in this book, especially Lila. She was such a complex character. Yes, she killed her husband, but I still had a lot of sympathy for her and wanted everything to work out for her in the end.

Lila Ridgefield seems like a woman who has been beaten down by her father, her mother and past life. Married to Aaron for companionship and comfort, her “convenient” marriage has brought Lila even lower. She stumbles across evidence that her husband is not who he appears to be. Once Lila’s husband goes missing, it is up to a very smart and dedicated detective and her novice partner to unravel the twists and turns of this case. I could not put this book down! Enjoy this five star read and let the guessing and theories begin!! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Lila is confused because her husband has gone missing, but she's sure that she definitely killed him, and left him somewhere where he could easily be found! So where on earth is his body?!" This is a good read, fast paced, cliff hanger chapter endings and plenty of questions through out the book. My favourite character is Ginny, the lead detective, the game she and Lila play was interesting, but I routed for the strong, smart and very savvy detective that Ginny is portrayed as. So many jaw dropping reveals and clues hidden in plain sight that you almost miss them. I suspected but was never sure, it was very well written. I recommend this book for a quick suspenseful read.

There are many things I need to say about this book: First, wow Second, oh my god Third, what? What? What? Fourth, oh my god Fifth, I want another book of Lila. Lila’s husband is a monster. Lila’s father is a monster. Lila’s brother in law is a monster. This woman seems to attract monsters. But she knows how to destroy monsters.

It’s just ok.

This story began with good promise but I felt it was just too much of a reach in the end. It passed the time and ok I guess for a holiday read, but definitely not earth shattering.

Great Suspense With an Unexpected Ending

This book was recommended to me by a friend (thanks, Tobie!) who thought of it while she was reading one of my novels. When I first started reading it, I immediately saw why. The similarities between one of my characters and Aaron were present, and for that reason alone, my interest was piqued. Although it has a completely different storyline, I knew I’d enjoy this one. The main character has a dreadful past that’s haunted her. Her husband has a troubled past as well, but ... don’t even get me started on her husband. The way the story opens lets the reader in on a small part of his secret and reveals his personality, and right away, I disliked him. Something Big Happens, and as the story moves along, the police, the main character, and the town start to realize there might be more going on than what they originally thought. Clues seem to lead the police to nowhere concrete. By the time I got to the end, I had no idea that *that* is what was going to happen. Kane does a fantastic job at keeping the reader guessing about who’s really telling the truth, who might be lying, who’s got something to hide. But one small detail in the line at the revealing moment made me realize who it was before I turned the page. I was floored! Those who follow me know I enjoy a good thriller/suspense novel, and this one did not disappoint. I like the different points of view so that we can get a better look at the same subject from a different lens. I like the breadcrumbs that were left - and you don’t even realize they’re breadcrumbs but then at the end, all the right breadcrumbs come trailing back in your mind and that is a good setup in a book. The characters are believable and likeable, you sympathize with the protagonist. There’s tension and suspense that propels the reader forward. I enjoyed this book!

too much spoon feeding

An overly long story that I felt took too long to finally reveal what actually happened to Aaron and by whom. The suspect pool is very very small and along with obvious clues throughout, it was not difficult to figure out who dun it. And the constant and repetitive telling me just how smart at playing the game, and verbal sparing the characters are is just bad storytelling. SHOW don't TELL. Don't spoon feed me: if the characters are so savvy, I'll figure it out.
