High Street chain Argos has been branded irresponsible for promoting a range of sexually provocative lingerie designed for primary schoolgirls.
The underwear, which includes tiny G-string pants and padded bras, is advertised in the store's catalogue for girls aged between nine and 16.
The Tammy range, sold for as little as £5 for a pack of four thongs, also includes a 'loveheart' underwear set in pastel pink and thongs with I Love Me emblazoned on the front.
In addition to being displayed in Argos catalogues, the lingerie is sold in Tammy, the nationwide High Street children's store.
A leading psychologist who works with sex offenders said the clothing could encourage child abuse. Experts claim that the provocative underwear, normally worn by adults, could mean children inadvertently send out signals that would put them at risk.
Consultant forensic psychologist Richard Beckett said: 'Clothing like this can potentially trigger unhealthy interests in children. Unfortunately, there is a group of individuals in society, and it's not just men but women too, that has particularly disturbing attitudes towards children and their sexuality.'
'Parents need to be aware of the connotations,' he added. 'Whereas they might perhaps see the clothing as a bit of fun, the underwear will not necessarily have the same connotations for other adults.'
Last night there were calls for the brightly coloured lingerie, displayed on washing lines draped with fur boas and feathers, to be removed from catalogues and banned from stores.
Tory MP Ann Widdecombe said she was appalled. 'This is the next step in the destruction of children's innocence-Let's get them taken off the shelves. Of course underwear like this will lead to more abuse of children. The children who wear it won't realise the effect they will have. I appeal to mothers to protest to Argos.'
Michelle Elliott, director of children's charity Kidscape said she was shocked that Argos had included the range in its 2002 spring/summer catalogue.
'Underwear like this is totally inappropriate. Argos should have more sense and behave more responsibly. I don't know what they are thinking. Nine-year-olds don't need thongs and padded bras,' said Ms Elliott
Television personality and children's campaigner Esther Rantzen, who heads the child protection charity ChildLine, said the slogans printed on the garments were particularly irresponsible.
'We believe anyone selling or marketing clothing to children and young people has a responsibility to bear in mind the welfare and best interests of those children,' said Miss Rantzen.
'ChildLine would urge manufacturers and retailers to think carefully about the messages their clothes send out to and about the children who will be wearing them.'
A spokeswoman for Argos denied that the underwear was inappropriate, saying that it was a fashion item children wanted to wear.
Marks & Spencer was forced to discontinue a range of children's satin lingerie several years ago after harsh criticism from the NSPCC.

When it comes to the subject of his daughter Elizabeth and her modelling career, Mick Jagger is surprisingly prudish.
So quite what he will think of her latest assignment remains to be seen.
Lizzie, 19, has posed in skimpy lingerie alongside 18-year-old Theodora Richards, daughter of Mick's fellow Rolling Stone Keith and his wife Patti Hansen.
The new Jagger-Richards partnership has been hired by Marks & Spencer to promote its new underwear range MW, which stands for men and women.
In another rock connection, the photographs were taken by Mary McCartney Donald - daughter of Sir Paul and Linda McCartney.
Lizzie is the eldest child of Jagger and Jerry Hall and has been modelling for five years.
But Theodora is a relative newcomer to the modelling scene, having taken part in only two previous fashion shoots.
Both girls had been accompanying their fathers on the Stones' current 40 Licks world tour before the M & S assignment.
Although Keith Richards's views about his daughter posing halfnaked are not on record, he takes a notoriously laid-back approach to life. Not so Mick, who was against his beloved Lizzie taking up a model career from the start.
Rows about her taking to the catwalk from the age of 14 were one reason cited for his divorce from Jerry.
And last year his fears seemed to have been justified when Lizzie appeared at the Lancome Colour Design Awards looking tired, gaunt and far from healthy.
It had been her fresh- faced appearance which landed her a £500,000 deal with the make-up company, but those at the awards compared her to her companion for the night, Jodie Kidd, in the years when she was renowned for her waif-like "heroin chic" look.
At the time a source close to the family said: "Mick will be absolutely furious when he sees what Lizzie looks like.
"He has certainly known a lot of models in his time and is well aware of how things like drugs and eating disorders are rife in that world.
"That is why he has always been against her becoming a model."
Lizzie's best friend is said to be another member of the junior Stones sorority - Ronnie Wood's daughter Leah.
But Lizzie and Theodora are also close and plan next year to set up home together.
"We have been friends since we were born and want to move into an apartment in Manhattan and go and do art courses," says Lizzie.
She insists that they will not be following in the footsteps of their hellraising fathers, adding: "We're not really, like, going-out kind of people."

Anna Yuzhakova takes her laptop computer with her to the restaurant car. She wants to show her international visitor the many charms of Siberian beauties. They are the result, she says, of years of mixed marriages by citizens from different republics of the former Soviet Union.
Anna is a scout. She discovers new talents for the Noah Models agency in St. Petersburg.
She is herself a former model. Four times a year she crosses her native region by train searching for the next top models, the ones who will one day strut the catwalks of Paris or New York.
Her travelling companion, Stephane Hababou, watches the photos of would-be models scroll across the screen. He’s also a scout. He represents the prestigious Marilyn agency in Paris.
It’s his first trip to Siberia. Hababou says it’s the best way for him to find new prospects ahead of his competition.
There’s not a moment to waste. Anna and Stephane stop in every large city of the region, holding a casting call that is open to all.
About 50 teen girls in black undergarments and stiletto heels greet Anna and Stephane at every stop. Some move nervously. Others proudly show off their curves.
The presence of this visitor from Paris ramps up the pressure. Everyone knows Hababou holds the key to a possible career abroad. It’s an opportunity to follow both an American and French dream, a chance to escape the daily drudgery of life in Siberia.
Anna invites Marina Korotkova to step forward. The 17-year-old barely has the time to take two steps before a cutting remark welcomes her into the world of modelling, even if pronounced under the guise of humour. “Marina is a little overweight.” At 93 centimetres, her hips are too wide. The visitors still take a few photos and recommend she go on a diet.
Russia’s largest modelling school is in Novosibirsk. It’s a unique breeding ground for girls who start training as early as age 10 or 12. They learn fashion photography techniques and how to sway their hips on a catwalk.
Fifteen-year-old Kristina Churina, a recent graduate, catches Stephane Hababou’s eye. If she loses a little weight, she could end up in Paris within the year, modeling the creations of top designers.
But few are chosen. Anna selects about 30 young women during each of her Siberian scouting trips. Only a fraction of them will ever end up with real modelling careers.
To be ready to seize the opportunity if presented with it, Kristina has been taking intensive English courses. She also has a plan B. She’s studying tourism and hopes to one day manage a large hotel.

Siberia is known around the world for its frigid temperatures. But in the world of fashion, the region is famous for being home to the most beautiful women in the world.
The measuring tape is king. Minimum height: 172 centimetres (5 feet, 6 inches). Maximum hips: 90 centimetres (35.4 inches).
Casting calls are open to all and attract about 60 hopeful young women every time they are held.
The measuring tape is unforgiving. With hips measuring 93 centimetres (36.6 inches), Marina Korotkova is considered “a little fat.”
Stephane Hababou, from the Marilyn agency in Paris, has come to Siberia to find the most promising beauties before his rivals do.
Anna Yuzhakova (centre), herself a former model, visits Siberia four times a year on behalf of the Noah modeling agency in St. Petersburg.
Anna discovers 30 to 40 fresh and interesting faces every month.
Anastasia Akhmameteva catches the eye of Stephane Hababou. Her ticket to Paris is within reach.
For the ones left behind, the rejection is often brutal.
15-year-old Kristina Churina just graduated from Novosibirsk’s modelling school and has caught the attention of the Paris agency.
But Stephane Hababou hesitates about Kristina: “If she loses weight, we’ll see see how she changes.”
Siberia is considered a modelling reservoir, thanks to ethnic mixing.
A little powder, and barely pubescent girls turn into femmes fatales.
A fashion show after the casting call allows scouts to observe the models in real conditions.
For many young women from small villages, modelling offers a chance to travel and earn a lot of money.
