Preeti Desai of Preetalina Photography will be photographing the National Food Bloggers Bake Sale on April 17, 2010.
I met Preeti on flickr and she kindly volunteered to take photos of the bake sale.
We met at Dunkin Donuts for a quick meeting. She is such a nice person! We had a great time discussing photography and the bake sale over coffee and muffins.
Preeti is a self taught photographer. She has been involved with Photography for five years.
She loves photography, reading, travel, & animals. She has also volunteered at an animal shelter. Her favorite cuisine is Mexican. She is a chocoholic. Her favorite dessert is dark chocolate truffles with raspberry filling. Preeti owns a photography business (and website), an etsy shop and blog. You can also see her photography on flickr.
Baking is my Zen blog post of bake sale:
Engine oil. Exhaust fumes. Brake discs. 775 km a day. Sounds tough? Not for these men and women who love their bikes to death,
You can’t see beyond the puff of smoke and you can’t hear beyond the bike chatter and the noise of revved engines. There’s chaos in the parking lot—300 bikes, as many bikers (not as many babes, though), camaraderie inside the café. Led Zeppelin is crooning Whole Lotta Love out of the jukebox, beer is flowing and the crackle of the munchies just adds to the mood. It is a hip café in South Delhi and 300 bikers have gathered for their monthly meet—Yezdi Boys, Pulsar Club, Road Survivors, 60kph, Xbhp men, Royal Beasts, the G.O.D.S., the lone riders, the odd club, the veteran, the rookie… The men are sweaty for they have come back from a gruelling trip to Ladakh. The babes are hot in their beads and bandanas. And there’s talk of fenders, steel shanks, Slither tees, a 2400 cc bike called Rocket, the latest armour and the favourite biker tee that reads: If you can read this, the bitch has fallen off…
Biking is Delhi’s latest fad and the city is, literally, on two wheels. Look at the statistics. Xbhp has 22,000 registered members, the Royal Beasts boast of at least 300 members, Road Survivors are 60-strong, the numbers at 60kph are swelling each day. And they all do it differently. Some meet at a gasoline station and head for a day-trip towards Rajasthan. Some gather in a dhaba and discuss motorbikes—what else?—over chai. Some ride alone, some enjoy weekend rides, others hate anything less than a month trip. Some join the bunch, others carry their stove and tent, coax their wife and children and go on biking holidays. Some can afford only annual trips, others think bikes are better than their girlfriends. Almost everyone is on bikes. The rest are plain covetous. Or, limp hearts. Such is the enthusiasm and obsession that you might soon hear of Gali No. 18 Club, Lane 52 Boyz, a Mr Palampur On Bike…
Of late, there’s one that has garnered a lot of envious eyeballs. The Xbhp men with some funny names and nerve shattering stats: Gasoline Junkie (he’s done 775 km in a day), Matharu Bhai or Skyscraper (he rides his Karizma on one-wheel and can do flamingoes and freewheelies), Bunny Punia (Delhi-Pune non-stop in 31 hours), Ken (150 kph and a guide for gullible francophone tourists). And then there's Sundeep Gajjar aka Sunny, the brain behind the Great Indian Road Trip: 20,000 km (Delhi-Leh-Kanyakumari-Shillong-Delhi), 110 days, six men, six bikes that can touch 300 kph, two back-up vans....
But it is not just the single, rugged guys who subsist on biking adventures; even some staid, married scientists do. Ask Dr Paraj Shukla, an agricultural scientist at Pusa Institute and he quickly rattles off how he works Saturdays, overtime, on holidays so that he can squeeze rides into his mundane routine. “I don’t mind going on leave without pay, but I can’t live without these trips.” He often packs tents, sleeping bags, utensils, canned food and medicines in a rucksack and is ready to roll. But not alone—he takes along his wife and little daughter for these camping rides. He talks of friends who have lost their jobs for always begging for ‘biking leaves’, but turn around, swear a ‘What the heck’ and head into the mountains! Leh and Spiti are hot destinations but ‘where’ really doesn’t mean much to him. His bunch (60kph) meets on the road. That suffices.
On lazy evenings, you can also see teenagers on their machines zipping past Noida Expressway in seconds. It is not just cheap thrill, or a macho cult, biking for them is an alibi to bond. They don’t care about the speed; they don’t care expenses either—some even shell out Rs 10 lakhs for a sexy Superbike.
Mahima Nijhowne is so petite and elegant that you might think she’s a danseuse. But she is Delhi’s Biker Babe. And who would believe that this petite voice and accent trainer almost died in a motorcycle accident when she was not even two. “I come from a family of Bullet freaks.” As member of The Royal Beasts, Mahima wears jeans and jacket and rides with, what she calls, her band of brothers. Her 350 cc bike weighs 160 kg and when on the road, Mahima’s speedometer never dips under 80 kph. Doesn’t she raise enough eyebrows on the street? “Oh, yes, people often stare back, some act funny, others give a quick thumbsup… The reactions are varied and can be fun.”
But why a ride a bike? “Ride it and you would know it. It is amazing freedom, you are one with the surroundings, it empowers you, it relaxes you, it makes you happy. Who else would make you feel like that?” Anything above 600 cc is a Superbike. The most coveted one, of course, is the Triumph Rocket III, a 2400 cc bike.
What of dangers round the bend? Doesn’t that daunt them? “Our life is loaded with risk, so why not this one?” asks Nishant Dixit, a 20-something business development professional, who waits for the annual ‘pilgrimage’ when he can stuff his duffel bag with some clothes, his wallet with some money, switch off his cellphone, forget his boss and head towards the hills. “I often go with friends and ride 22 hours a day. It’s great fun. Yes, flat tyres are my nemesis, but who really cares. If it happens in the middle of nowhere and night, we spread a sheet and sleep by the roadside.” No prior hotel reservations for him, no canned food, no finicky itineraries—he sleeps when his eyelids droop, eats what he finds on way, loves every moment.
For most bikers, their bikes are, well, more than lean, mean machines. They treat them as one would treat a beloved—pamper her, talk to her, understand her whims. At least that’s what IT professional Amanpreet Dhiman does. He has happy bikes but a jealous fiancée. “My fiancée thinks bikes are my first love, she comes second,” he laughs. “All my three bikes have a character of their own. I need to talk to them often to keep them in
good mood. They always love me back, they never betray me.” Perhaps this ‘unconditional love’ is important for Road Survivor Amanpreet. With his band of boys, he often goes for long rides, one of the most gruelling being the Delhi-Goa trip that took them through 9000 km in 30 days.
But 9000 km might seems like a walk in the park when you meet Anil Gautam who, in the past 25 years, has done 7.5 lakh miles (yes, 7,50,000 miles) crisscrossing the country alone, or with his team of riders. For Anil and his team it is a lonely ride. “When we rev that accelerator we are prepared for anything—breakdowns, running out of food, tools, clothing… We carry just about everything that we might need. And it’s no easy weight. It comes to nearly 25 kg of food, blankets, spares…”
At high altitudes, where air pressure can stifle you, a milk chocolate is a rider’s best friend. The next best thing is a high-carb diet. Chocolates or potatoes, all Anil wants is to be on his motorcycle till the day he dies.
That’s passion. But it comes at a price, especially when it comes to riding gear. For one-day trips, most bikers slip into their crumpled jeans and tees and head off, but when you are riding a bike on a dirt road, or astride a machine that can touch 200 km in seconds, you need protective gear. A regular overall made of flame-retardant material could cross Rs 20,000; the boots that are studded with steel toe caps and made of breathable Kevlar could touch Rs 15,000. A head-to-toe gear would have you poorer by Rs 50,000.
But whatever the gear, whatever the expense, on a Ducati, a Suzuki Hayabusa, a Hyosung Comet, a Bullet or a Pulsar, these bikers have revved up the imagination of an entire city. Next time there is a damsel in distress, the knight might forget his white steed and armour; he could well be a Mr Palampur on a Bike from Gali No. 18 Club.
Whoa! That’s some hot thought on a weekend. Vrooooooooooom!
In 1885, German inventor Gottlieb Daimler created the first motorcycle by attaching a four-stroke gasoline engine to a wooden bicycle frame. Daimler’s son Paul became the first motorcyclist on November 10, 1885, when he rode his father’s invention.

Rachna Lodha (R) and Preeti Lodha (L) wash their hands at washing station set up in their government run school before they are served lmid day meal in village Hilgna, district Guna in Madhya Pradesh. The handwashing campaign, part of a UNICEF programme called ÔSchool Saving LivesÕ, stresses the importance of using soap, not just water, to clean hands before eating or preparing food after using the toilet, changing a babyÕs soiled pants and other tasks. Despite being rich in natural resources like diamonds, Madhya Pradesh is more infamous for its poverty. It is home to around 50 million people who defecate in the open air without latrines (around 70% of its 72 million people). These people consequently do not have adequate hygiene, without soap and enough water to wash their hands after defecating. About 5% of the global total of open defecators can be found in this one Indian state alone. Madhya Pradesh is also home to some of the most undernourished children in India with 50% of under threeÕs suffering from stunting (chronic malnutrition), an indicator of long-term persistent nutrition deprivation that lead to poor physical growth and brain development in children with tragic implications for child survival, growth and development. As much as 50% of malnutrition is caused not by a lack of food or poor diets, but due to poor water, poor sanitation facilities and unhygienic practices - like not washing hands properly with soap. 2.5 billion cases of diarrhoea in children under-five are recorded worldwide every year , and in India diarrhoea caused 2,12,000 child deaths in 2010 alone. Moreover, many people do not recognise diarrhoea as a problem; because it is so recurrent it is thought to be normal, and they do not seek help. These numbers are therefore likely to be under reported. UNICEF India/ 2013/ Manpreet Romana...

STORY: A seductive witch kills men by casting a spell on them. A bunch of friends are trapped in a haunted house with mysterious lady. Is she the same witch? Do they manage to escape her fangs alive?
REVIEW: Barely a week after the unintentionally funny 1920 London hit the screens, another chudail is waiting to show us a better time. Thankfully, this one at least knows the basics of make-up and is not caught amidst a perpetual bad hair day. But her story is equally dull.
Director Surya Lakkoju took a cue from Karan Johar's joke about casting good-looking people and we get a hot demoness, who adds oomph to the film. It could've been easy to buy into her simmering rage had it not been for her feeble backstory. The chudail is appealing till she doesn't murmur a dialogue. Of course, no one would expect good acting in a film with such an obnoxious title but this one is so bad that it is not even good. The inane dialogues make the two-and-a-half hour's runtime unbearable, leaving you more bored than scared.
The macabre ambiance is built solely by a resounding grim voice that rants about the chudail and her secret power. Frankly, it is more of a running commentary that seems right out of a catalog, which lists down the dos and don'ts.
Good writing has never been a forte of Indian horror films. They take pride in being banal. In this movie, there are scenes lifted straight from Conjuring, Vaastu Shastra and even from Ragini MMS 2. The cardinal rule of scaring people is to avoid showing the face of the ghost. There is always a greater fear of the unknown. But that as a concept hasn't been drilled well in to the psyche of Indian filmmakers yet. We are subjected to sauce dripping faces and ridiculous looking contact lenses that even a seven-year old wouldn't be scared of. As for the actors, the lesser said about them the better.
Skip this one. It will suck the love for horror films out of you. www.today-events.com/movie-reviews/chudail-story-movie-re...
