The latest episode of AMC’s “Preacher” has some people incredibly upset thanks to a graphic scene depicting Jesus Christ having sex on the night of The Last Supper.
The AMC drama is based on a comic book about a modern-day Preacher who is losing his faith and encountering many different demonic entities and monsters. In the tenth episode of Season 2, which aired Monday, the main character goes on a hunt to find a literal relative of Christ. However, it’s the way the episode opened that has many very upset and offended.
The first seven minutes of the episode, titled “Dirty Little Secret,” depicts Jesus and a woman having sex, speaking graphically about various acts and showing the two’s various positions in silhouette. Later, he tells her to keep it a secret before saying that he’s got to go off to do something for his father. It later becomes clear that this is the night that Jesus would be eventually crucified.
“Depicting Jesus in a grotesque sex scene is an assault on the sensibilities of all Christians, as well as people of good will who are not Christians,” said Catholic League president Bill Donohue in a statement. “We have been treated to this kind of fare from some pay-per-view channels, but we are not accustomed to AMC getting into the mud. If this is a signal of what it aspires to become, we will rally Christians against it.”
Donohue linked to a scathing report from NewsBusters that broke down the episode’s infamous scene as well. In addition, some fans took to social media to express their outrage at the episode and AMC.

The latest episode of Preacher has caused quite the stir among some Christians. Season 2, episode 10 opened with Jesus partaking in a graphic sex scene on the night of The Last Supper. Preacher showed Jesus and a married woman’s silhouette in various sexual positions. The kind of scene where you would definitely feel uncomfortable if you were watching with your parents.
A number of Christians have spoken out against the scene, calling it blasphemous. “Depicting Jesus in a grotesque sex scene is an assault on the sensibilities of all Christians, as well as people of good will who are not Christians,” said Catholic League president Bill Donohue in a statement, which was reported by Fox News . “We have been treated to this kind of fare from some pay-per-view channels, but we are not accustomed to AMC getting into the mud. If this is a signal of what it aspires to become, we will rally Christians against it.”
So, how did Seth Rogen take the backlash? Just as well as you would think.
He tweeted a link to the Fox News article and wrote, “If this isn’t a good endorsement of #Preacher, I don’t know what is.”
If you only tuned into one episode and that as the only scene you saw, there is a good chance you could be uncomfortable – maybe even offended. However, Preacher has been over the top, quirky and campy since the moment it began.
The whole premise of the show is that Jesse Custer, a preacher, is looking for God who has disappeared from Heaven. And it was never going to be in a way that would seem introspective and look at deeper meanings of religion and faith.
Instead, there is gore, sex, violence and death.
By pointing out these types of scenes in Preacher will simply lend it to get more attention, which may help the AMC show considering it could use a little help in the ratings department.
When the Jesus sex scene occurred, I actually didn’t even think about the implications because of how Preacher doesn’t try to take itself seriously. I never once thought about any type of message the writers were sending about Jesus having sex because Preacher is not a story based on real events. It’s fiction. It’s fake. It’s an interpretation of graphic (and they definitely mean GRAPHIC) novel in a world that is flamboyant and loud.
Some have said they won’t watch Preacher anymore after that scene, and they should stop. If a television show does something that offends you, don’t watch. I’ve stopped watching shows for less.
But Preacher is going to continue to push buttons and cross lines. It’s not a show for everyone.
