On this page you can learn how to distinguish male and female praying mantises. You can do this in two ways; by looking at the number of segments on the abdomen or by looking for external sex differences like the length of the antennae.
The segment counting method can be used for all praying mantis species that are older than L4 (fourth instar). In some species it is much harder to see than in other species. With small species you may need a magnifying glass.
The basis principle is simple: female praying mantises have 6 abdominal segments while males have 8. The final segment of the female is much larger than the others while the male has several small segments towards the end of the abdomen.
If you have to count the segments, you should look at the underside of the mantis. You cannot count the segments from looking at its back side. The picture will explain it all:
Counting the abdominal segments of a mantis will tell you its sex. Females have less segments then males. Left panel depicts a female nymph, the right panel a male nymph of Hierodula membranacea.
If you have an adult mantis you can also use the segment counting method. It’s even easier then because the mantis is larger and the body it completely formed. The next picture shows the underside of an adult female Chinese mantis. You can see that the last segment is large and has a particular shape. A male of the same species has several small segments at the end of the abdomen. The shape is also different.
The abdomen of an adult female mantis. Males have more segments and the last segment is smaller than that of the female. On this image I did not number the first segment, it’s between the hind legs. Females have 6 segments and males have 8.
Sexual dimorphism means that males and females look different from another. For example with horses the sexual dimorphism is low. For peacocks, the sexual dimorphism is high. In mantis species the degree of difference between males and females is different for each species.
Adult male and female praying mantises are different from each other. This is called sexual dimorphism. The differences become more pronounced as the mantis grows older. This method of determining the sex of the mantis can be used between L5 and L8 instar, depending on the species. Some species look a lot alike while others are very different in body size or other aspects.

Antennae
Males generally have longer and thicker antennae than females do. This can be seen most clearly when the mantis is adult, but as the nymph grows to become an adult it steadily develops the longer antennae. When comparing male and female nymphs you see that the female has thin hair-like antennae while the male has thick antennae. Species of the Empusidae family have males with feathered antennae (‘hairy’ antennae) while the females have smooth antennae.
Body size
Some species have a very clear difference in body size between males and females, for example the Orchid Mantis and the Budwing Mantis. As the mantis nymphs grow, you can start to notice that some nymphs stay behind in size compared to the others. These are the males. When adult the difference is even more obvious as neither of the sexes will grow anymore.

An adult Parasphendale affinis female. She is much larger and bulkier than the male.
Body type
Male praying mantises are generally much more slender than female praying mantises. This can be seen especially well when looking at the thorax. Most species have a pronounced widening in this area, for example the shield of the Dead Leaf Mantis ( Deroplatys desiccata ), and males have a much smaller widening than the females. This effect becomes more and more pronounced as the mantis nymph becomes older.
Length of the wings
This difference can only be seen in adult mantises. The wings of a male praying mantis are generally longer than those of the females. The wings of the females reach to the end of their body or even do not reach that far, while the wings of the male are never shorter than the body. The wings of the male generally reach past the end of their body, sticking out a bit from the back. This is because male praying mantises will fly to find a mate, while females generally are to heavy to fly.

"We call it 'Wining in the Caribbean."
1. "Me and my BF try out new positions every once in a while. But normally they are positions he’s seen in porn and they typically don’t do anything for either of us. My personal favourite position is the cowgirl because it [hits] my G-spot just right and with rubbing myself its a combination that gives me an insane orgasm . I especially love it when my BF sits up and I’m sitting in his lap and we make out while I’m grinding him. I’m getting excited just thinking about it!" [via]
2. " Prone bone ! It's the perfect angle to reach my most orgasmic places and he gets great leverage to both pound deep or take nice long smooth strokes that drive me crazy. And I just love the feel of his weight on me when he presses his full body against me." [via]
3. "Personally it's kind of prone bone, but I've just got one leg under him: the other is [not], and my legs are well apart . Just hits the right spot!" [via]
4. "One of my faves (not sure it has a name) was in missionary position with a pillow against the headboard slightly where I would lay my head. He would spread my legs slightly open whilst my feet were planted on the bed. Then he would put it in and start grinding (we call it wining in the Caribbean) while he thrusts and I would wine along with him. So each wine our body would connect and it was great clitoral stimulation 💦" [via]
5. "I like doggy style with my butt all the way up and my head and shoulders pressed down on the bed. Plus points if he grabs me by the hair and forces my head to stay down." [via]
6. "I’m not sure if there’s a name for this, but my favourite is a variation of reverse cowgirl. Here’s how I like it: Have [the] man on his back, with his knees bent and feet planted on the ground, about shoulder width apart. Then, instead of mounting him backwards, plant your knees on the ground, between his legs — basically 'hooking' your legs underneath his. Then mount him and grind and/or thrust. I love this because it’s just as deep as doggy and you can get much more control than standard reverse cowgirl . It’s a great position for him to obviously get a great view of your ass, spank you and pull your hair. Additionally, an orgasm is almost 100% guaranteed if you have a vibe on your clit." [via]

Yoga helps you connect to your body. So does having sex . You need to understand movement, breathing patterns and how to engage your muscles to learn what feels good and what doesn’t.
The two intersect so frequently, it’s hard to discern which is which—especially when it comes to their names. So, lets play a game of is it yoga or is it a sex move!
With the help of Jessica O’Reilly, sexologist and author of The New Sex Bible ; Tanya Boulton, New York City yoga instructor and co-owner of tanya-b clothing ; and Kathryn Budig , yoga teacher, author and Under Armour spokesperson, we’ve round up 10 positions. Think you can discern which belongs on the mat and which belongs in the bedroom?
Type of Position: Sex How to do it: This one requires some physical fitness…and flexibility. Start standing upright while your partner stands in front of you facing away (her back to your front). Next, have her bend over, so her hands are on the floor. Then, help her lift and wrap her legs (one at a time) around your waist so you can penetrate.
How to do it: Start in the tabletop position: on your hands and knees with your back flat. Align your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Then, spreading all 10 fingers wide, distribute your weight through your palms and knuckles. Exhale as you curl your toes under, lifting your heels slightly off the floor, and bring your pelvis toward the ceiling, making an “A” shape with your body. Keep your feet at hip-width distance, hold, then exhale again as you bend your knees and come back to the tabletop position.
How to do it: Lay down on your back with your arms at your side. Lift your hips up toward the ceiling (as if a string is pulling them), and tuck your tailbone under. Engage your inner thighs, fronts and backs of your legs. Hold, then slowly bring your back to the floor.
How to do it: Have your partner lie on her back with her palms facedown on the ground. Using her hands, have her push her weight against the floor to bring her legs up so her toes point toward the ceiling. Then, in one swift motion, have her bring her hands to support her lower back; only her shoulders and elbows should be touching the floor, supporting her weight. Next, kneel on one knee beside her and slide inside of her.
How to do it: Start in plank position on your hands. Put majority of your weight onto your left hand and roll onto the outer edge of your left foot while you lift your right hand and foot off the ground (into a side plank position). Place your right foot over your left leg like a hurdle and spin your chest and pelvis to the sky as you reach your top arm overhead. Hold for 10 breaths, then return to start position and repeat on the other side.
How to do it: Start on your back. Swing your legs up into the air and overhead, bringing your toes to the ground behind you. Bend your elbows (so they’re against the floor) and support your mid-back with your hands.
How to do it: Your partner lies flat on her stomach and you enter from behind. It’s called The Snake because you rock, grind and slither in rhythm like a pair of snakes. If she prefers, she can press up with her hands to lift her upper body off the ground just like the Cobra yoga position.
How to do it: Sit sideways next to a wall. Then, in one smooth movement, swing your legs up against the wall and your back onto the ground. Keep your legs together, bend your elbows like cactus arms resting on the ground, and close your eyes. You can also add support to your lower back by placing two thickly folded blankets beneath your bum.
How to do it: She lies on her back with her legs up in the air. Then, she stretches them apart as far as possible using her hands to hold her ankles in place. He enters from below.
How to do it: Both partners kneel on the bed facing one another (very close). She bends her right leg so that her right foot is flat against the mattress (at a ninety degree angle) and you bend your left leg, lifting it over her left leg, sliding inside.

The butterfly is a sex position where the partner with a vagina lies on their back at the edge of the bed or other surface, and the partner with a penis stands or kneels in front and between the partner’s legs. The standing partner does most of the work. The partner lying down can move their legs for comfort and stimulation.
Known as “The Blossoming Position” in the ancient text the Kama Sutra , this position is considered very pleasurable because of deep penetration. Also, the clitoris can be manually stimulated in this position.
In the butterfly sex position, the receiving partner lies down and the partner with a penis stands in front so that the pelvis is a few inches above their partner’s pelvis.
The butterfly is a very easy and versatile sex position that is comfortable for both partners. Many similar positions with slight differences are known by different names. Partners can try slight adjustments to see which options are most enjoyable for both. Below are several variations to this popular position.
The standing person leans forward into their partner’s legs, pushing the legs back toward the head.
The partner that is lying down rests both legs on one shoulder of the person who is standing. This creates a tighter fit for penetration.
By crossing the legs and placing the left ankle on the left shoulder of the standing partner and the right ankle on the right shoulder, crisscross creates a smaller insertion point for the penis.
With the legs pointed directly at the ceiling, the partner lying down creates a 90-degree angle with their body.
While the partner with a penis is on their knees, the other person bends one leg outward, and their partner pushes down on that leg.
Similar to the praying mantis position, the sandwich is when the partner lying down bends both legs outward while the other person pushes down on both legs.
The partner on their back squeezes their legs together and bends the knees up toward their chest, resting the heels on their partner’s chest.
The standing partner pushes the other person’s legs straight back toward their head, eventually touching their toes to the surface they are lying on. This position should only be done if the partner who is lying down is very flexible.
The poses in the traditional Kama Sutra typically describe vaginal penetration by a male, but same-sex couples can do many of the moves, too.
It’s Uncomfortable for the Receiving Partner
Because the butterfly position allows for deep penetration, some receiving partners may find this uncomfortable. But just because deep penetration is possible doesn’t mean it has to happen. The partner with the penis can take care to go slowly and be considerate of their partner’s comfort and pleasure. Good communication is key to making this position work.
As with all aspects of sexual intercourse, communication between partners is essential. Make sure you both know what the position is and that you both feel comfortable. Sex is about playfulness, says Dr. David Yarian, Ph.D. , licensed psychologist and certified sex therapist, in Oprah Magazine. He suggests limiting your expectations for what you want to achieve and focusing on pleasure and playfulness instead.
Talking to Your Partner About Trying the Butterfly
If this is a new position for you and your partner, you’ll want to discuss how you’ll try it and where. If you’re interested in trying variations, plan to communicate clearly when you’ll switch up the position. You can keep in mind a few ideas for keeping this position both comfortable and pleasurable:
The butterfly sex position allows for deep penetration, so you should use caution when attempting it.
Depending on the variation of the butterfly, the leg muscles can be strained or injured if not properly stretched beforehand. You should also use caution with the hips and pelvic muscles and ligaments.
Additionally, the upright partner must be cautious about applying too much weight when pushing down on their partner’s legs, especially in the anvil and Viennese oyster variations.
