A twenty-year-old self employed driver has been taken into custody after the National Drugs Enforcement Agency NDEA seized another consignment of controlled drugs, this time in the Pointe Larue area. The seizure, suspected to be heroin and cannabis, together with a sum of money, occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, following intelligence led operation into the activities of drug dealers in the Pointe Larue area. Evidence collected during the course of the operation indicates that the location was being used to deal and distribute drugs as some of the drugs were sealed in ready to go packages. The most recent seizure had a street value of approximately R50, and is typical of a number of recent seizures being made by the NDEA, indicating a trend of smaller dealers who are being supplied by some of the larger dealers and importers. The latest seizure brings the total street value of drugs seized to date to more than R37 million. An analysis of the drugs will be required to determine the content and purity of the substance that was seized, following which a determination will be made regarding what charges will be brought against the person arrested. The outcome is that the addicts, who buy the drugs believing them to contain pure heroin, are in fact buying substances that contain little more than traces of heroin and the remainder being largely made up of a combination of painkillers and precursors. The NDEA is seeking to establish the abuse of precursors in the manufacture of illicit substances.
