Councilman for legislation Lukáš Manhart, who is preparing for the municipality a draft law on the regulation of prostitution, estimates that in the Prague metropolis, there are a hundred brothels and around a thousand private facilities. Police keep a record of 53 sexy clubs, four strip bars and 13 gay clubs.
Most establishments with erotic programmes and sexual services are in the city centre – near Wenceslas Square, in the Ve Smečkách Street, or around King’s Road, as well as in the Jilská Street or around Uhelný trh (Coal Market).
There are larger companies with dozens of employees in the centre, which are visited mainly by foreign clients. Smaller clubs, which Czechs rather attend, are in marginal districts. In Prague 1-5 alone, there are 48 erotic establishments. New trends in recent years are tantra salons offering special erotic massages and other services at extra cost.
In addition to clubs, there are hundreds of private facilities in the capital city. The Association for Pleasure Without Risk, which focuses on health prevention, counselling and therapeutic services for people providing sexual services, has a database of about 400 contacts to private facilities but visits only about five of them.
“Private facilities are more difficult to be approached. The first contact is by telephone; the numbers change frequently, and it is not easy to gain clients’ trust over the phone. In private facilities, fewer women are working than in clubs, just one or two. But there are also private facilities similar to several apartments in the house, or they are on multiple floors, and the environment is more like a smaller club. There is a bar, for example,” field worker of the association, Jana Polaková, said. Private establishments are not marked from the outside but are in common areas, so they are hard for police and social workers to find.
Unlike other years in Prague, the number of women who prostitute themselves on the street is reduced. “They are concentrated around the Charles Square. Every night you can meet ten or fifteen women there,” Manhart says. Currently, there is no Czech legislation that would define and edit the “oldest profession”.
The amount of prostitutes on the streets also depends on meteorological conditions or tourism. Street prostitutes have taken to the other part of the city, especially the Charles Square, where they offer themselves, for example, around the New Town Hall or at the Church of St Ignatius. You can also see them in Odborů Street, and sometimes in Myslíkova Street.
“Wenceslas Square is no longer the centre of the street prostitutes, as was the case 20 years ago; but also today they sometimes appear there. They are mainly prostitutes and foreigners from outside Prague, mainly Bulgarians,” a spokeswoman for Prague 1, Veronika Blažková, said. In Prague, about a hundred women are working on the street. For example, in Vienna, where street prostitution is not prohibited, it is up to six hundred people. The public houses are also connected with barkers and people offering erotic ads. On Wenceslas Square and its surroundings, there are around 20 barkers per night. These are mostly Africans or Russian-speaking foreigners. “Earlier, it used to be worse with them in the centre – usually there were five times more of them,” Blažková said. But today, erotic establishments rely more on internet advertising, put up leaflets, or use advertisements in the media.
About 80 percent of women working in brothels in Prague are Czech. “Among foreigners, we can include Slovaks and women from the former Soviet Union. The uniqueness of Prague is women from Africa, mostly from Nigeria or Ghana. On the street, we can especially find women from Bulgaria,” Poláková said.
The social composition of women working in the sex industry in Prague is different. Most women have a high school diploma, but there are also university graduates (about five percent) or women with primary education (about a quarter). “On the street, there may not be only socially disadvantaged women. Of course, we can see their drug users, but they are also in clubs or private facilities, just more hidden,” Poláková said.
The average age of prostitutes in Prague is around 29 years old. The common motive that leads them into the sex industry is the need to financially provide for their family (single mothers), repay debts, or earn a certain standard. For many women, it’s then hard to leave the sex industry and find another job. “Even though the work in the sex industry makes them tired, they find it hard to leave the business and start working in another area,” Poláková adds.

Sexual services in the capital city can sometimes be purchased even for food vouchers or drugs (drug-addicted prostitutes). However, according to available information, the monthly income of most women is highly above 40 thousand Czech crowns.
The average price of sexual services per hour is between 2000 and 4500 CZK, whereas the woman mostly keeps 50% of the service price, though this may vary between 40% and 60%.
There is also a more rare system whereby the woman rents a room for a 4000 CZK per day and night and does not pay anything else to the company from the money she earns. Individual companies offer various actions and discounts for regular customers, happy hours etc. when the price can drop to as low as 1700 CZK per hour.
Prices at private apartments per hour are usually lower than at night clubs (from 1000 to 2000 CZK per hour). In the street, the prices are lower, and the price for vaginal sex is around 1000 CZK or oral sex around 500 CZK, but it may even be much lower – depending on the situation of the woman, how far she wants to go, and how badly she needs the money.
There are known examples when girls were so desperate that they offered their services only for food or drug.
The average monthly income of a prostitute in a sex club also differs according to the “season”. Each woman considers the “high season” a different time of year since it also depends on where she works and her own situation.
According to a 2009 quantitative survey, almost half of the respondents in the “high season” had an average monthly income of 50 thousand Czech crowns. The income of more than a quarter of the respondents was between 30 and 50 thousand Czech crowns. A minority of women earned 10 to 30 thousand crowns per month.
In the off-season, the women, in general, had a lower income. Only 19% of the respondents claimed to have an income above 50 thousand crowns in this period.
According to information available on the internet, the prices for 30 minutes in a private apartment are around 800 to 1500 CZK, while some women ask for less, such as 700 CZK. An hour costs 1300 to 1500 CZK and two hours above 3000 CZK. Most prostitutes charge around 8000 CZK for a whole night.
Escort services are more expensive. These are services where the prostitute arrives at a destination selected by the customer. The price also depends on the distance; usually, it is between 1500 and 3000 CZK per hour of “classical services”.
According to the police, the problem is that verbal offering of sexual services cannot be punished. Getting the evidence is a problem. Yet street prostitution is on the decrease in Prague. It gradually moves to private apartments and clubs, where prostitution can actually not be proven at all, as the police analysis says.

“I got used to luxury and cocaine,” says Tereza, who is now 28 and has a well-paid husband and two beautiful, healthy children. Nobody would believe that she used to earn money as a hooker. “But now and then somebody appears who remembers my former life,” says Tereza, who told us why she started doing sex for money.

It was just fun, but the men were crazy about it, and in only one hour, we earned the same money as for a week of a tough summer job.” Tereza admits that although she was not yet an adult at that time, she had already come to understand that it is possible to combine the pleasant and the useful and that sex can earn you decent money.
But the first paid sex was just a coincidence. “I was in Pilsen at a disco, and a handsome young guy came to me and tried to chat me up. I liked him, and I wanted him, but I somehow enjoyed teasing him. He asked me what he had to give me to persuade me to go with him to his home. I said he had to give me 10,000 crowns. Well, he gave it to me. Then he wanted to come to my place and become my boyfriend. I liked him, yet I acted like a mean bitch, and I told him that the price remains the same. He gave me ten thousand one more time, but he did not come any more,” laughs Tereza.
Another man who Tereza used came from France. “Since I was a child, my mum kept telling me that a woman must know how to use a man and then kick him out. First, I did not understand, but later I started following her advice. Once a friend of mine introduced me to a Frenchman somewhere from Morocco. He had lots of cocaine and lust for sex while I was hungry for the cocaine. But the drugs slowly started getting out of her control. She had too many of them, and she did not have to worry about their price. “I was drugged every day. I started having hallucinations; I had a feeling somebody was in my flat and thought I was talking to people who, in fact, were on the other side of the republic… I also got an abortion, but I did not care. I didn’t feel it had anything to do with me.”
Tereza started to take crystal meth, and she stopped being attractive. There were younger girls, full of energy, who enjoyed going from party to party. And above all, they were not drugged all day.
“Suddenly, I was fed up with everything. Men, drugs, Prague… I needed to get out. I went to visit my mum, and I told her everything. But she had guessed it already anyway. She let me live with her. My priority was not to take drugs any more. I had a strong will, and I banned myself from Prague and drugs.”
She found a boyfriend, started painting pictures, found a new balance, and started thinking of finishing her university. “One day I got an e-mail from my old friends, inviting me to go to Indonesia for three weeks with a German guy. It was an amazing holiday on a yacht. He wanted sex only twice, he paid for everything, and he wanted most to talk. And when I went home, he gave me 50,000.” It was Tereza’s last business. An exotic holiday, from which she brought lots of money. It was a bargain. “It cost me a relationship because I told my boyfriend the truth. Of course, he could not handle it. I came to understand that I have to choose. Either I will have somebody who will love me. Or I will be a top-class hooker. There is no middle way, no compromise.”
Now Tereza has been married for three years and has two children. Her husband is a successful businessman, and he can feed the family from his sole salary. Tereza is on maternity leave, and the old days are a very distant memory now. “In the last three
