The dramatic reductions in poverty observed in 2015 appear to have been a statistical anomaly. Of interest, However, is the decrease in poverty among Hispanics or Latinos from 33.1% to 30.4%. Children of Color Not only there is a gap between everybody else and children. Children of color are disproportionately affected by poverty. The city of Memphis has a poverty rate of 24.6%. Child poverty is 39.6%, while the poverty rate for people over age 60 is the lowest of any age group at 15.3%. It is impossible to tell if and how much poverty rates changed in 2024 due to the failure of the U.S. Census Bureau to release 1-year estimates for 2024. The city of Memphis has a poverty rate of 21.7%. Child poverty is 35.0%, while the poverty rate for people over age 65 is the lowest of any age group at 14.1%. Poverty in Memphis has decreased markedly for all ages and for non-Hispanic Whites and Blacks as a whole, while increasing slightly for Hispanics/Latinos. Child poverty is 44.9%, while the poverty rate for people over age 65 is the lowest of any age group at 15.8%. Poverty in Memphis has increased markedly for all ages and for non-Hispanic Blacks as a whole, while decreasing for non-Hispanic Whites and for Latinos. A worker making the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, if working 40 hours a week year-round (52 weeks), will earn $15,080 before taxes. The poverty threshold for a family of two was $16,460 in 2018, thus rendering even a small family of a mother and child under poverty.
