This week, American Idol Alum  Jax makes her Postmodern Jukebox debut on a retro Janis Joplin – style remake of the 2000 Wheatus hit, “Teenage Dirtbag.” Watch:
I first learned about American Idol Alum Jax when my Twitter friend @DanielleFL suggested her for a PMJ cover. I spent the rest of the day watching Jax stun audiences with her powerful rock voice and originality in season 14 of “American Idol.” Working with her allowed me to see what an incredibly rare talent she is – she is full of creative ideas, hardworking, and hilariously down to earth. She’s already overcome many challenges in her own life, and there’s no question that she’s going to go on to have tremendous success as an artist.

“Teenage Dirtbag” may seem like an odd choice for a PMJ cover, but the combination of its lyrical storyline and the Janis Joplin classic rock sound makes for a particularly interesting juxtaposition. Jax is clearly no stranger to Joplin’s music, either; she performed “Piece Of My Heart” with Steven Tyler on the Idol finale. Her singing connects seamlessly to the lyrics here; vulnerable at some points, and defiantly soaring at others.

Fans of the 2000 hit "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus might enjoy Postmodern Jukebox's blues-y new cover.
Instead of aiming for the original's high-pitched vocals, American Idol star Jax channeled Janis Joplin, and we're so glad she did.

Former 'American Idol' contestant Jax invites you to 'listen to Iron Maiden' in her Postmodern Jukebox debut.
American Idol Season 14 alum Jax makes her Postmodern Jukebox debut in a retro cover of the 2000 Wheatus hit, “Teenage Dirtbag.”
The East Brunswick, New Jersey, resident re-interprets the song in the style of Janis Joplin , mixing in snippets of “Piece of My Heart,” a song she performed with Idol judge Steven Tyler on the show’s finale, before the song’s chorus. She especially has fun singing the lyrics, “listen to Iron Maiden, baby” with her signature jazz tones.
“The combination of its lyrical storyline and the Janis Joplin classic rock sound makes for a particularly interesting juxtaposition,” writes PMJ leader Scott Bradlee on the group’s website . “Jax is clearly no stranger to Joplin’s music, either. Her singing connects seamlessly to the lyrics here; vulnerable at some points, and defiantly soaring at others.”
Bradlee heaped praise on the 20-year old singer, who was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease in April, and underwent surgery to remove her thyroid.
“Working with her allowed me to see what an incredibly rare talent she is – she is full of creative ideas, hardworking, and hilariously down to earth,” he said. “She’s already overcome many challenges in her own life, and there’s no question that she’s going to go on to have tremendous success as an artist.”
Jax recently put out her new single, “Stars,” last month and is set to release her new EP, Funny , on January 27. In the meantime, her “Teenage Dirtbag” cover is now available for download on iTunes.
