Postmodern Architecture
PoMO is a loosely defined style that embraces individualism, experimentalism, as well as modern architecture. It is a result of the postmodern architecture school in which the architect invites and interrogates the language of architecture he or she inhabits. His background in art and architecture gave him a unique insight into the concepts of modern architecture.
Graves was also a designer and artist. He also played a role in the construction of these structures. This helped to establish his expertise in structural engineering. As with many great architects who came before him, he understood the value of symmetrical designs. Postmodern architecture emphasizes symmetry, in all forms, colors , and textures. Contrary to the early style of architecture, which emphasized sharp angles and sharp corners. Postmodernists use smooth curves and graceful forms.
The beauty of postmodern architecture is its simplicity. The majority of buildings have few distinguishable characteristics. The basic components are straight lines, repeating patterns, lightweight materials, and almost any ornamentation. Postmodern structures are noted for their stark geometric forms and minimalist decorations, as well as for their apparent random designs.
Postmodern architecture also has the intriguing aspect of contradiction. Postmodern architecture does not encourage the idea of progress, as certain forms of modern architecture do. The movement is focused on a clear contrast between the past and the future. This is evident in the use of heavy and lightweight materials as and the architectural themes. As is evident in the title of the movement postmodern architecture is distinguished by its rejection of classicism. This means that traditional architectural styles that were prevalent in the past have been dismissed because they do not reflect the contemporary world. Certain styles, such as cubicles, for example are not part of the historic architectural tradition. Others, like the flat roofs associated with the villas of Italy can't be regarded as representative of classicism, since they don't have the tiny plastered plasters of the time. Postmodern architecture, as a more specific definition is a kind of genre or a transitional style that was born in the 21st century, and is characterized by excessive utilization and rejection of traditional norms.
One of the most striking characteristics of postmodern architecture is its use of repetition in its forms and in its designs. The building can be adapted and flexible, without focus on form following function. This is apparent in the apex of modernist buildings with vertical shapes that are in line with the movement. However, despite the stylization, the end result is usually a structure that is structurally sound. But, it could change in shape depending on the circumstances.
