Portugal and Spain Strengthen Ties with New Cross-Border Infrastructure Project

Lisbon, May 28, 2025 – In a landmark move to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation, Portugal and Spain have announced a major new cross-border infrastructure initiative. The two Iberian neighbors unveiled plans for a high-speed rail link between Lisbon and Madrid, set to reduce travel time between the capitals to just under three hours.

The project, dubbed the Iberian Express, is part of a broader EU-funded effort to improve transport links across the Iberian Peninsula. Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and Spanish President Pedro Sánchez signed the agreement during a bilateral summit in the Portuguese city of Évora, emphasizing the importance of unity in the face of global economic challenges.

'This is more than just a railway—it's a bridge between our peoples, our economies, and our futures,' said Costa. Sánchez echoed the sentiment, adding, 'Spain and Portugal share not only a border but a common vision for progress in Europe.'

The new rail line, expected to be operational by 2030, will also include stops in key cities such as Badajoz and Cáceres, boosting tourism and trade in lesser-developed regions. Environmental groups have praised the project for its commitment to sustainable transport, as it aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions by diverting traffic from roads and airlines.

In addition to the rail link, the two nations agreed to expand renewable energy partnerships, particularly in wind and solar power, to meet EU climate targets. The summit concluded with a symbolic handshake over a shared plate of ibérico ham and pastéis de nata, celebrating the enduring friendship between the two countries.

With this ambitious initiative, Portugal and Spain are setting a new standard for cross-border collaboration in Europe.
