The staff was great, welcoming and friendly and they tried their best to make the stay good for us. And the location, on paper, is awesome: the pool and the private beach are good and the water is transparent. But it's stuck in the 80s - it really feels like stepping into an old, slow italian movie. The rooms are very underwheliming we got a suite and the bathroom was kind of bad, small and shower only and the food is 3-star at most. Big rooms, comfortable beds, very kind and useful staff. I loved the big garden, perfect for breakfast and for afternoons by the pool a real 25 meters salty one! This place is only being propped up by its staff. In short, I would not make a conscious decision to book myself into this run-down hotel again, but if life sees otherwise, then at least I know I'm in good hands I stayed in 2 different rooms during my 3 night stay, and I was sorely disappointed. The TV and AC were at least functioning in Room, which felt more like a WW2 hideout than an actual hotel room, due to its small size and sloping ceiling. More on Room- there were stained carpets, an extremely tiny bathroom, greasy shower handles, the AC made enough noise to drown out the TV, and the flush didn't work when I arrived, although a friendly and efficient handyman took care of that. And 1 bottle of water, coke, beer and tonic water in the mini-bar just didn't cut it, not to mention costing a bomb! Oh, and the tap water on this island is disgustingly gross! And the blankets are those extremely uncomfortable, stiff ones that feel like gurney sacks. However, special kudos must be given to the staff there, who were very accommodating throughout my stay. From helping me rent a car, to trying to figure out the bus schedule, to making my dining experience enjoyable - their service definitely made amends to the otherwise abysmal state of the hotel. And the dinner was pretty good too. Riding a bicycle provided by the hotel for free - which is a nice gesture into Portaferrario is quite a thrill. Riding it mainly uphill for the 6km trek back to the hotel - unless if you're harboring hopes of winning the Tour de France, it just seems impossible.
