Portland Trail Blazers Make Blockbuster Trade Ahead of NBA Draft

Portland, OR – June 10, 2024 – In a stunning move just days before the 2024 NBA Draft, the Portland Trail Blazers have acquired All-Star forward Pascal Siakam from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Anfernee Simons, the No. 7 overall pick, and a future first-round selection.

The trade signals a major shift in strategy for the Blazers, who have been rebuilding around young guards Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. With Siakam’s arrival, Portland adds a proven two-way star to pair with franchise cornerstone Deandre Ayton, giving the team a formidable frontcourt.

Siakam, 30, averaged 22.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists last season and brings playoff pedigree, having won a title with Toronto in 2019. His arrival could also impact the future of Jerami Grant, who now may shift to a sixth-man role or become part of another trade.

Fans reacted with excitement outside the Moda Center, with many seeing this as Portland’s push to return to playoff contention in a loaded Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Pacers gain a young scorer in Simons and additional draft capital to build around Tyrese Haliburton.

What’s next? The Blazers still hold the No. 14 pick and could target a wing or center in the draft. With Siakam in the fold, the pressure is on head coach Chauncey Billups to deliver a turnaround after last season’s 21-61 record.
