Young Hollywood's brightest stars have good looks, killer style, and the hottest projects. Are you ready for the new sensations?
Twenty-year old Eve had tongues wagging at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where she posed in Chanel on the red carpet, touting her second film, This Must Be the Place. In it, she plays the wise-beyond-her-years best friend to Sean Penn's aging former rock star. "It was a blur," Eve says on her Cannes debut. "I was so scared I'd fall off the steps, I was holding onto Sean for dear life, like, 'Save me!'" Her parents may be megastars (Dad is U2's Bono; Mom is activist and Edun designer Ali Hewson), but Eve—a junior studying theater at NYU—says they keep her ego in check. "If my accent gets too California or my head gets too big, they'll put me in my place." —ALISON PRATO
Eve wears a Paul Smith Jeans shirt, $235. Western Costume Company hat.
"I was a hurricane as a kid—bouncing off the walls," James says, so his elementary school teacher suggested that the Melbourne, Australia, native channel his energy into acting. It worked. Last year the 20-year-old beat out 500 others for his debut role of J in the critically acclaimed crime drama Animal Kingdom. Next up is the teen romantic comedy The First Time—"My character is a pretentious wank, attempting to be this cool guy," he says—which is definitely lighter fare. And though Hollywood beckons, he's not ready to leave home yet. "I haven't hit that point where I want to move there permanently," he says, "but it definitely could be in the cards."—ALEXIS SWERDLOFF
It's not easy being mean. Especially when, like Phoebe, you've spent three years playing a shy mermaid (on TV's H2O: Just Add Water in her native Australia). But on The CW's The Secret Circle, she fires up such serious witchery as the icy Faye that even Regina George would approve. "There were girls in school that I'm modeling her after," she says, laughing. "You're not sure if they liked you or were trying to steal your boyfriend." The 22-year-old says she aspires to the TV-star-to-Oscar nominee career of Michelle Williams, who incidentally also starred on a Kevin Williamson-created show—Dawson's Creek. Phoebe is well on her way: we're spellbound already. —DANIELLE NUSSBAUM
He's been called "the next Johnny Depp" more times than he can count, but that doesn't mean the 25-year-old is tired of the comparison. "It;s not the most interesting thing to talk about for me," he says. "But it's flattering." That's good news because Thomas will further cement that nickname when he stars as young Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton's big-screen adaptation of the spooky TV show Dark Shadows. (Old Barnabas? Depp naturally.) The production is quite a departure from Thomas's last role, as bad-boy Jesse in Disney's Prom. "It's like a graphic soap opera with witches, werewolves, vampires, and ghosts. The whole thing is pretty great." —ALISON PRATO
From playing a fan favorite on The CW's Supernatural to voicing a character on Family Guy—where he once saw celeb-crush Mila Kunis ("I thought I was going to die," he says)—to starring as Matt Damon's son in Cameron Crowe's upcoming We Bought a Zoo, the Atlanta native is full steam ahead toward leading-man status. Yet life in the limelight hasn't fazed Colin, who enjoys fishing and amateur DJing—his iTunes library has 25,000 songs—when he isn't filming or studying to make the grade to get into college. "My friends think I'm lucky to miss school," he says. "But I've still got to make it all up on set!" —TOMMY WESELY
"I did not want to go," recalls the seventeen-year-old of her first big audition. Fortunately, her older sis talked her into hitting the open casting call that resulted in a role in this month's Martha Marcy May Marlene. "She gives me good advice," Julia says of her persuasive sibling. Now the native New Yorker is ready for the majore leagues with the upcoming The Perks of Being a Wallflower, starring Emma Watson and Logan Lerman. "If I wasn't acting, I'd want to do fashion," she admits. But don't look for her to trade the red carpet for the runway. "I love film," says Julia, laughing. "So I'm sticking to it!" —GAYATRI RAJAGOPALAN
"My first time on set was No Country for Old Men," recals the 21-year-old. "Working with Tommy Lee Jones, the Coen Brothers, Javier Bardem—it blew my mind." Since then Caleb has won over audiences with roles in TV's Friday Night Lights and X-Men: First Class. The Texas native is also a songwriter who got a chance to indulge his other artistic passion while filming drama Contraband (out this January) alongside Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale in New Orleans. "I'd walk around looking for music at night," he says. "Jazz, funk, bounce—different artists have painted my palette." While we have a hunch his career is on the fast track, Caleb doesn't like to look too far into the future. "I don't want to jinx it," he says. —TOMMY WESELY
As the hilarious Stiles on MTV's Teen Wolf, Dylan plays sidekick to a werewolf BFF (Tyler Posey). "I don't have to be shirtless," the New York native jokes. When he was twelve, Dylan started making his own YouTube vids and planned on going to film school. Now 20, he recently completed his first lead movie role in romantic comedy The First Time opposite The Secret Circle's Britt Robertson. "He's the man of his house," the actor says of his character, Dave, "who's still figuring out the whole love thing." Dylan is excited to write an episode for season two of Teen Wolf, stepping into a different role—this one behind the scenes. "It's fine,"he says, "I don't have to be the guy who gets the girl!" —CARINA MacKENZIE
Dylan wears a Burberry London coat. Dior Homme shirt, $430. Burberry Brit pants, $250.
Mae has the angsty-teen bit down pat. She currently lights up NBC's Parenthood as rebellious high-schooler Amber Hold and just wrapped coming-of-ager_The Perks of Being a Wallflower_, in which she plays Logan Lerman's bossy girlfriend. The L.A. native says she can relate: "Growing up, it was easier having a protective shell than be vulnerable." Mae, 23, has been acting since the age of three, but lately she's been making beautiful music with her beau, singer-songwriter Landon Pigg. There's no band name yet, but she promises: "It'll be a little wacky and a little classic." —ALEXIS SWERDLOFF
Most young actresses want the spotlight all to themselves, but this nineteen-year-old is perfectly happy to cede the lead. "I've never been a best friend. I think that'd be really fun," she says. "I've always played dramatic characters." That would include her breakout role as teen mom Amy Juergens on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Next up for the California native is The Descendants, in which she stars as George Clooney's emotionally closed-off daughter. Also in Shailene's future? A new path. "I want to go to school for herbology, the study of plants and natural healing," she says. "More of what we can get from the earth to heal what's in our bodies." —TIERNEY BRICKER
Having nailed his big-screen debut alongside Nicole Kidman in last year's Rabbit Hole, the 24-year-old stars in this month's remake of Footloose as dance-phobic Willard—a role he serendipitously played in his high school's stage production. In real life, the NYU grad has smoother moves: "It was hard to dance offbeat," he says. "I play a lot of instruments, so rhythm is kind of innate for me." Next year, Miles will appear in 21 and Over, a comedy directed by the dudes behind The Hangover. If he weren't in showbiz, the actor admits he'd probably be playing professional baseball—but at this rate, we don't forsee that happening anytime soon. —EMMY FAVILLA
For someone who got her big break on The CW's The Vampire Diaries, Kat is pretty skeptical of the vampires-are-so-hot-now thing. "I just think, When were they not?" she says. "What about Dracula and Buffy?" If fangs ever do fall out of favor, she's set. Born in Switzerland but raised in L.A., the 22-year-old is a triple threat: She's a former backup dancer and an accomplished singer who released a single ("Sassy") last year and has toured with the Black Eyed Peas. Kat—who speaks four languages—plans to continue to broaden her repertoire. "As a black girl in Hollywood, I want to break barriers," she says. "To do everything from a Tyler Perry film to a Sucker Punch." —AMANDA FITZSIMONS
Kat wears an Elliot Atkinson coat. Jeremy Scott for Adidas leather jacket. Equipment shirt. Current/Elliott pants, $198. Claire's earrings, $9 (for three pairs).
In this story: hair, Esther Langham; makeup, Francelle; production, Peter McClafferty at petermcclafferty.com; prop styling, Gille Mills at The Wall Group; manicure, Tracey Sutter for Cloutier Remix.
