‘After Porn Ends': What 9 Porn Stars Did After Their Careers Ended (Photos)
What do porn stars do when their lives in the adult film industry end? That’s the question at the heart of documentary filmmaker Bryce Wagoner’s film “After Porn Ends,” and its new follow-up, “After Porn Ends 2.” The film looks at the tragedies and successes of people who left an industry that famously uses up young talent. Some have no regrets about their years in the industry. For others, a career in the adult industry has proven to be a conduit to certain despair.
Johnnie Keyes: Johnnie wasn’t the first black adult performer, but he was the first black PORN STAR. Coming from poverty he enlisted in the army and became a champion boxer. Using the GI Bill he got a drama degree and starred in Jesus Christ, Superstar. After a chance casting in Behind the Green Door , he found himself on the shores of Cannes and a cultural icon. Eventually retiring to raise his family, Johnnie is now an accomplished jazz singer and runs a youth outreach basketball camp with his son in Seattle.
Lisa Ann: Starting as a stripper in Pennsylvania, Lisa used porn to further her feature dancing career and was a well known player for 15 years before the opportunity of a lifetime unfolded in front of her, the opportunity to do a parody of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. This catapulted her to porn superstardom and made her the top performer in her business for five straight years. Always the ambitious one, Lisa parlayed her media appearances into a shot at hosting her own fantasy sports radio show on Sirius XM, which has launched a whole new brand and successful book.
Ginger Lynn: Simply the face of XXX in the 80’s and early 90’s, Ginger was the original “girl next door.” Starting in bikini contests and taking the advice of famed photographer Suze Randall, Ginger played the adult business by her rules, commanded the largest salary in porn, and got out exactly when she wanted to. Studying acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, Ginger has had major roles in Wing Commander, American Pie: Band Camp, The Devil’s Rejects, and 31. She is as much an icon in the comic-con fashioned events as she is in the adult world now.
Tabitha Stevens: A Vegas Dancer who did one scene that kicked off an entire 20 year career. Tabitha holds the record for most porn star appearances on Howard Stern and became a regular on Doctor 90210 . She and her husband run a fine art photography gallery in Utah.
Brittany Andrews: Brittany knew that she wanted to do porn to further her own business interests. She made her own line of videos and distributed them all herself. After getting some mainstream cred by posing in Playboy Magazine, she learned to be a DJ and now plays all over the world being booked by the largest DJ agency in the USA, Skam Artists.
Darren James: Darren began his path to XXX as Navy veteran from the streets of Detroit. After trying to be in the LAPD, he was waitlisted due to budget cuts. Starving and not knowing where his next job was coming from, he tried porn and became a prolific performer. But after taking a big contract in Brazil, he wound up getting infected with HIV and now does public speaking and advocacy work for those living with the disease.
Chasey Lain: Chasey began as a dancer and became one of the highest paid performers in XXX. But after struggling with the changing economics and structure of the adult business, she turned to working as an escort at the world famous Bunny Ranch. She’s now saving money to go back to school and start her life over.
Georgina Spelvin began as a Broadway dancer and actress. When the work dried up she got a job on an adult film as a caterer and then starred in the director’s next film, The Devil in Miss Jones ; which would go on to be one of the most successful XXX movies of all time. Georgina bounced back and forth with retirement until she took a job in an office and retired with her pension (and love of her life) 20 years later in Hollywood, CA.
Janine Lindemulder: A one time softball star with college scholarship offers, Janine found her way into adult through a modeling ad. Her porn career led her to the most successful feature dancer in the world. She retired to marry and have a daughter with Orange County Choppers star Jesse James, but after a brutal custody battle she also went to federal prison for owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes. For some, their careers in adult entertainment is accepted proudly and without regret. For others, a career in the adult industry has proven to be a conduit to certain despair as they struggle to find a way to bury their past and emerge with a new career or calling.

All good things eventually come to an end, including the careers of porn stars.
But life after porn doesn’t necessarily have to be anti-climactic. And it's certainly not the end of the line when it comes to your working life.
Former adult performers took to Reddit to shed a little light on what happens after you stop having sex in front of film crews for a living.

I've had a regular job for the last five years but recently became unemployed. Sometimes things that seem like great ideas when you are a teenager turn out to have unforeseen consequences when you are in your 30s.
A friend once hooked me up with a job at a small advertising company. Told me the boss didn't care about my past work. Mentioned it to a few coworkers. Eventually found out the boss hated porn. She fired me.
It's even tricky for regular off-camera employees to get work elsewhere. We have to use vague company names to mask where we've worked before. One of my co-workers could not put his child in a private school because they did a background search on him and found out where he works. A lot of programmers here are worried that they can't get any other gigs if it is discovered that they work here. that kind of sucks.
[I] Worked behind the scenes. I know one who retired at 37 with her earnings (though she also has a successful husband) and another who married a very wealthy philanthropist and helps run his foundation. You generally don't hear from or about those who don't do well after porn unless they experience some sort of major misfortune.
I work in the biz (behind-the-scenes). I've heard women have trouble adjusting. For the most part, though, they can change their hair color, gain some weight, wear glasses, and everything will be OK. (Like some sort of post-porn witness protection lol.)
Worked as a stripper part time for about 5 years now. It's changed the way that I view people I believe. It hasn't had an effect on my career because I always had a second part time "regular" job. So I never had to worry about my resume. I guess it has made me really lazy. Why work hard all week at a shitty minimum wage job and bring home $400, when I can do that in one night dancing? But you can't work as a stripper forever so it kinda f**ks with your head.
I used to be a sex worker. There have been zero consequences in my professional life, but my personal life did suffer a little. A few friends knew while it was happening, and one friend only found out when it was over. She stopped being my friend a while.
Did a few mixed films in college (gay/bi/straight) soon to be 30 years ago on my way through nursing school. Got my degree and never looked back. A few odd looks for a few years. But once DVD took over (and my films weren't converted), they stopped. Meanwhile, I love my current career. My husband and I watch an old copy and laugh at my questionable acting chops.

From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, there was no bigger porn star than Christy Canyon . Energetic, unenhanced and with an air of approachability, she was the perfect fantasy girl.
When she ended her career in 1997, though, she had no idea what her next move would be.
It’s a common problem in the world of adult entertainment. Porn stars, you see, don’t get 401k plans. They don’t have pension plans. And when their careers end, they really aren’t able to carry their most notable skill to another job. It can be a daunting thing to face – especially for those who have broken through and found longevity in the industry.
Canyon was lucky. Beyond the fixed amount per film she earned for performing with Vivid
Entertainment, she also negotiated a $1 royalty for each copy of the film that was sold. And in the heyday of porn, that was a substantial number.
She saved the money – investing it in the market and prospered. (The first stock she bought, she says, was Wal-Mart ).
“When I retired, I knew I could survive another 20 years without earning a dime,” she says. “That was my security blanket.”
Rather than curling up in that blanket, she bounced around, trying new things after leaving the set. In the early days of eBay, she sold memorabilia directly to fans. An encouraging teacher at a writing class led to a book (which she self-published, since she didn’t like the one-time payment deal publishers were offering her).
For the better part of the last five years, she has been the host of Playboy Radio’s “Night Calls”.
“I couldn’t imagine doing something unrelated to porn,” she says. “I always knew that whatever I did, it would be associated with ‘Christy Canyon’.”
That’s not an uncommon philosophy. A career in porn typically overshadows an actress’s other achievements, no matter what successes they have. But the industry tends to protect its own – and many of the true superstars, who are its ambassadors to the mainstream world, keep their toes in the water even after they retire.
Tera Patrick , whose reign atop porn lasted most of the last decade, recently retired, but is on
a book tour for her just-released memoir. She also continues to operate an adult video production company. At the same time, she’s also trying her hand as a club DJ as she attempts to branch into new fields.
Others get degrees and move on with their life. (Nursing is a popular choice, for some reason). Some chase a dream of becoming a mainstream actress – never managing to get more than an occasional role.
A larger number move into the behind-the-scenes side of porn. Some start talent agencies or their own production company. Others - typically the ones who reach a modicum of success, but not real stardom - become on-set photographers or make-up artists.
Talk with today’s porn stars, though, about life after their film career and the same name comes up over and over: Jenna Jameson .
The actress, who translated her porn fame to the pop culture world, is a model of what many stars strive for. The problem is: The porn world has changed dramatically from Jameson’s days. Competition is fiercer. Salaries are lower. And competition from the Internet makes stardom on that level considerably less likely.
A few seem to get that – and are paying much closer attention to the business side of porn as they perform. Jesse Jane , one of today’s reigning queens, has spent seven years carefully building her brand. She recently renegotiated her contract and is about to launch a line of signature premium sex toys.
"I figure I'm going to do [porn] for four or five more years and then quit," she says. "I've been pretty good with my money. … My focus is save, save, save. After this, I'd like to maybe open my own business - and have enough saved that even if that didn't go right, I'd be ok."
She hasn't decided yet whether that business will be tied with the adult entertainment industry, but says it’s a definite possibility.
"When I retire [from acting], I will have spent 11 or 12 years of my life doing this,” she says. “I go to all the business shows with [Digital Playground] so I can learn. … I think you can never leave."
And what about men? Typically, true male porn "stars" have a longer shelf life than women. Performers like Ron Jeremey and Evan Stone are still actively performing after 15-20 years, something the audience won't let women do.
Once they leave film, they generally move to the Web, where they operate their own site, doing the same gig.
The more generic male performers are often the boyfriends of female performers. Their career spans in the industry are much, much shorter than women's.
