A tenth of 12 to 13-year-olds fear they are "addicted" to pornography, an NSPCC ChildLine survey has concluded.
One in five of nearly 700 youngsters surveyed said they had seen pornographic images that had shocked or upset them, researchers found.
The charity also says that 12% of those surveyed said they had taken part in, or had made, a sexually explicit video.
It says that viewing porn is "a part of everyday life" for many of the children who contact its helpline.
ChildLine has launched a campaign to raise awareness and provide advice to young people about the harmful implications of an over exposure to porn following the survey results.
One boy under the age of 15 told ChildLine that he was "always watching porn, and some of it is quite aggressive".
He said: "I didn't think it was affecting me at first but I've started to view girls a bit differently recently and it's making me worried.
"I would like to get married in the future but I'm scared it might never happen if I carry on thinking about girls the way I do."
A girl, who is now 17, told the BBC that she was sexually assaulted by her boyfriend when they were both 12 years old.
"He thought it was OK on some level," she said.
"Pornography isn't just a 10-minute video - it has consequences."
The ChildLine Fight Against Porn Zombies (FAPZ) campaign uses a series of animations looking at the implications of overexposure to porn for boys and girls.
The animations link to a range of information and advice to help young people understand the effects of replicating pornographic content in real life and to protect them from putting themselves at risk.
Peter Liver, director of ChildLine, said that it was important to talk openly about the issue.
"Children of all ages today have easy access to a wide range of pornography," he said. "If we as a society shy away from talking about this issue, we are failing the thousands of young people it is affecting.
"We know from the young people who contact ChildLine that viewing porn is a part of everyday life, and our poll shows that one in five 12 to 13-year-olds thinks that watching porn is normal behaviour.
"They tell ChildLine that watching porn is making them feel depressed, giving them body image issues, and making them feel pressured to engage in sexual acts they're not ready for."
He welcomed the announcement last week of plans to teach children from the age of 11 about rape and sexual consent as part of personal, social and health education (PSHE) in schools.
"Our campaign clearly complements this proposal," he said.
"Across society, we need to remove the embarrassment and shame that exists around talking about porn - which is why we are launching this activity and helping young people to make more informed choices."

Dame Esther Rantzen, ChildLine's founder, said it was shocking that children as young as 11 are approaching the helpline with concerns about pornography.
"Young people are turning to the internet to learn about sex and relationships," she said.
"We know they are frequently stumbling across porn, often unintentionally, and they are telling us very clearly that this is having a damaging and upsetting effect on them.
"Girls in particular have said they feel like they have to look and behave like porn stars to be liked by boys."
Dame Esther said that improved education was vital.
"We absolutely have to talk to young people about sex, love, respect and consent as soon as we feel they are ready, to ensure that they gain a proper perspective between real-life relationships and the fantasy world of porn," she said.

A young girl's family is speaking out after a TSA agent patted her down for nearly two minutes at an airport over the holiday break, leaving the girl feeling like screaming.
Her father shot video of the incident at an airport in North Carolina, for a flight back to San Diego. Kevin Payne told NBC San Diego he's all for airport security and making sure people have a safe trip, but he and his daughter feel the pat-down was uncomfortable, long and inappropriate.
"My dad was making funny faces silly faces in the mirror and I felt like screaming the whole time," said 10-year-old Vendela.
It began with a Capri Sun drink mistakenly left in Vendela's bag in the security line at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the family said. Flagged for extra screening, Vendela was patted down for nearly 2 minutes.
Payne said the agent's actions were invasive: "It was an uncomfortable situation."
A TSA representative had no comment, and said that as of noon Monday, the agency was not aware of any attempt by the family to contact agents.
According to the TSA's website, screenings determine whether prohibited items are concealed under clothing and that sufficient pressure must be applied in order to ensure detection. But it also states that screening procedures has been modified for children 12 and under to reduce the likelihood of a pat-down screening.
Payne said he thinks the pat-down in this case seemed to be the officer's go-to option.
"My goal was just to clear security as quickly as possible so we could make our flight even though I knew that in my mind they shouldn't be doing what they were doing," Payne said. "I didn't want to make an issue of it there or then because it wasn't the time or place and I didn't want to further traumatize my daughter."
His daughter, who had never gone through this kind of screening, said she kept herself together because she didn't want to "throw a tantrum like a 1-year-old." Vendela has seen the video, and hopes agents would focus on people who might try to hurt others on the plane, not kids.
"I know it's to keep everybody on the plane safe, but she kept patting me down," Vendela said. "Pat down, pat down. It was like, over and over."
In all, the pat-down and other extra screenings took about an hour, Payne said. The only way the family made it onto the plane was because it was delayed.

It may be best known for its network of shady websites selling guns, drugs and fake ID, but the Tor dark web browser is most commonly used to access child pornography, research has found.
By monitoring dark web activity over six months, it was found that 80% of traffic was to websites hosting images of child abuse, although the most popular category by page volume was the sale of illegal drugs. Such sites include Silk Road, which is now in its third incarnation after twice being shut down by the FBI.
The dark web is a section of the internet that is not indexed by search engines such as Google, and not easily navigated to using a standard web browser.
Accessing the dark web requires specialised knowledge and software tools. An example of this is content only accessible by using the Tor software and anonymity network, which while protecting privacy, is often associated with illicit activities.
Presented at the annual Chaos Computer Congress in Germany, the study was conducted by Dr Gareth Owen, a computer science researcher at University of Portsmouth.
Owen found that more than four-in-five visits to dark websites were for the purpose of viewing child pornography, accounting for more than fives times as much traffic as any other category received.
"When we found this out we were stunned," Owen admitted. "This is not what we expected at all."
The findings, reported by the BBC , will make uncomfortable reading for defenders of the dark web and Tor, the web browser used to visit its sites. Away from child porn and the sale of drugs and guns, dark websites can be used as a means for whistle-blowers to speak anonymously, and for sources to speak to journalists without their identity being known or conversation monitored.
Owen, himself a fan of Tor, said: "Before we did this study, it was certainly my view that the dark net is a good thing. But it's hampering the rights of children and creating a place where paedophiles can act with impunity."
Some sites on the dark web, such as the now-closed Silk Road 2, have imposed strict anti-child abuse measures to stop such content being viewed and sold online.
But much of the traffic to these websites, which cannot be indexed by Google or visited by any browser other than Tor, may not be entirely from humans. Owen explained in his report that crawlers set up by the police and other law enforcement agencies could well be responsible for a steady stream of traffic to illegal dark websites. "What proportion are people and which are something else? We simply don't know."
Another issue with monitoring dark web activity, as discovered by Owen's research, is how the sites don't stay around for long. It was observed that the vast majority of Tor sites exist for only a matter of days or weeks before vanishing. Less than one-in-six of the 80,000 sites monitored by Owen stayed online for the duration of his six-month study.
"Most of the hidden services we only saw once. They do not tend to exist for a very long time," Owen said.

Disturbing new video shows the moment an Australian police department employee corners a 13-year-old girl in an elevator and gropes her as she frantically attempts to get away.
Glenn Roche, 54, who was found guilty of indecent assault this week, is seen in the footage chasing the youngster into the elevator after a day out with her family, the New Zealand Herald reported on Thursday.
Roche seems to be playfully chasing the girl but then the sicko grabs her, fondles her and tries to kiss her while she tries to wrestle free, the footage posted by TVNZ-TV shows.
The girl later told authorities that she still suffers nightmares from the harrowing July 2019 assault, according to the Herald.
But Roche told the judge he was just playing around and claimed there was “no sexual gratification on my behalf.”
“My hands have slid up her body as she slid to the ground,” the sicko told police. “My mind has gone off on a tangent like this is a challenge to me. I can get her and give her a kiss on the cheek like her two sisters and mum.”
“She contributed to that occurring by releasing her body weight and sliding through my hands,” he said, blaming his tiny victim.
Police said Roche had been out with the girl’s mom and siblings. It is unclear what his relationship to the girl and her family was.
The judge wasn’t buying his excuse, however, and found Roche guilty.
He was also suspended from the police department, where he worked as a civilian employee, according to the reports.
