Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell 's band Porno For Pyros -- which also includes Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins , the Minutement's Mike Watt , and more -- first reunited during lockdown on the 2020 Lollapalooza livestream , and then played their first real show in over 20 years at this year's Welcome to Rockville as a last-minute replacement for Jane's Addiction, and they kept the reunion going with an LA show and Lollapalooza , the latter of which found them bringing out Billy Corgan for a Led Zeppelin cover . Now, guitarist Peter DiStefano has confirmed that new music is on the way too.
"@pornoforpyros writing and recording new music," he wrote in the caption of an Instagram pic of him and Perry. That's all we know for now, but we'll update you when we learn more!

Women own their sexuality on these heated tracks.
As an ugly 2020 trudges on, music continues to figure out how to exist in absolutely uncharted territory. From Meg Thee Stallion to Flo Milli, women are dropping music that demands attention and respect, as they own their sexuality and find pleasure in a time when it seems impossible.
Here, we’re rounding up the hottest tracks of 2020, from sultry simplicity off Liv.e’s debut album to stadium-size heavy-hitting jams via Dua Lipa and Jessie Ware.
On “Weak,” Flo Milli rolls through the pros and cons of hitting up past and present flames, as she simultaneously dodges texts from unwanted members of the roster. It’s a satisfying display of sexual ownership that has Flo Milli skipping candidly over a melodic beat, as she reiterates the bad-bitch status that she initially introduced the mainstream to with her breakout single, “Beef FloMix.”
Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? was one of a handful of projects that ushered in a new wave of reenergized disco into 2020. The record’s title track is a neon-infused cut that sounds like it’s supposed to be blaring through a roller rink, with Ware centering herself as the queen and host of the dance floor. “Here together, what’s your pleasure?” she purrs.
In somewhat of a surprise left turn from her usual ethereal, stripped-down R&B cuts, Summer Walker comes through with a spoken word, half-sung/half-rap verse on “White Tee,” the sultry cut from her Life on Earth EP. “White Tee” is overtly sensual as it utilizes the metaphorical benefits of a favorite white tee.
The two undisputed queens of Texas appeased the fantasy of every fan in 2020 by linking up. In a ceremonious crowning, Beyoncé symbolically passes the pop culture icon torch to Meg, as she hops on a verse of the already smoldering single “Savage.”
Dua Lipa taps into the sweaty, headband-filled aesthetic and sound of the '80s on “Physical.” Following the lead of The Weeknd and other artists who have leaned into the synth-ridden corners of pop’s yesteryears, “Physical” is drenched in allusions to the relentless pursuit of a high pulse.
With overwhelming waves of vocal distortion paired with lyrics that tout unfazed self-affirmation, British garage rapper and captivating up-and-comer Shygirl warns of the plights of getting with a bad bitch on “Watch.” The track finds Arca and Shygirl carelessly flowing over a deranged house beat, as the pair showcase their inherent chaos.
Liv.e’s debut project, Couldn’t Wait to Tell You, is an atmospheric curveball of a trip, gently gliding through regional soul, jazz, and R&B influences that have been pressed and distorted through her signature lo-fi pressure cooker. “You the One Fish in the Sea” is one of the album’s less abstract musings, as Liv.e explicitly embraces her certainty of someone’s staying power.
Supplemented by an inescapable TikTok dance, “TKN” is a sultry exchange between two of the year’s heaviest hitters. Rosalía nabs her own coproducing credit on the track, which finds her deeply leaning into a reggaeton sound, likely in part to the track’s other producer and Puerto Rican reggaeton pioneer, DJ Nelson (along with frequent collaborator El Guincho). The cut even finds Travis Scott rapping a few bars of his own in Spanish.
Two leading ladies in rap trade verses in this explicit collab, which launched both a discourse on women’s sexuality and a viral TikTok dance with high kicks and splits. Cardi doesn’t skimp on the X-rated details, and Stallion doesn’t hold back with her hard-hitting rhymes. Does the bombastic track deserve a spot on your “getting it on” playlist? That’s up to you. But does it make you feel sexually empowered as hell? For sure.

It was a night of porn like no other.
Before relocating to Arizona I did a night shift at KUNC, a public radio station in Fairbanks, Alaska. Broadcasts occasionally adopted a theme and one show was devoted to '70s soundtracks. My friend Nathan, who has the most eclectic taste in music, frequently joined me at the station. For this theme show he brought some special recordings.
"I've got a nice collection of porn," he said --or something to this nature-- opening his shoulder bag to reveal a deep stack of vintage porno soundtracks. As the warm sounds of porn filled the airwaves on a cold winter night, Alaska's citizens were none the wiser.
Would they have come pounding on the studio door to drag off into the night had they realized it was the theme to Deep Throat they were snuggling to by the fireside? We didn't hide the fact of what we were playing, but let's just say it wasn't overly advertised either.
As track after track spun, Nathan and I both agreed that modern porn soundtracks just don't stand up to the golden era of porn, the 1970s. Back then, the music was part of the movie, a compliment to the action, something that helped set the pace and give rise to what was happening around (and to) the actors. This old school porn music fit precisely in the era with strings, vibes and horns and tasty groove, and didn't try to circumvent it or be something it wasn't. Think about it: Imagine the chase scene in Bullitt with Steve McQueen racing his Mach 1 through San Francisco if it was set to some repetitive poppy number made with synthesizers and tacky guitar leads? It wouldn't have worked. Instead, musical scores were racy and added to the tension--pushed the pulse higher. Vintage porn soundtracks did the same thing.
That's not to say any porn soundtrack is the equivalent of anything from Lalo Schifrin, the composer of the Bullitt soundtrack and hundreds of others, but at least there was an effort to make porn music seem legit and quantifiable. Take away the movie and much of this music was still good to spin at a party.
Today's porn soundtracks just seem to be lacking. Considering almost every kink is covered by the porn industry, one would figure that the music would be creative: industrial metal for bondage flicks, girl pop for lesbian scenes (or riot grrrls rock for lesbian bondage). Instead, we find frighteningly smooth jazz that makes Kenny G sound like Coltrane,'80s new wave synths, badder than bad rock, horrific metal, and lifeless pop that demands the sound be lowered. Even the porn scores made in 2006 by Eddie Van Halen--yes, that Eddie Van Halen--fall prey to cliché kitsch. In fact, one song seems better suited for something on AMC, while the other track is no better than one of those tedious scenes when the actors pretend to develop a storyline before the sex begins. It's where everyone hits the fast forward button.
(This also brings up the question of whether porn should have soundtracks. Given the, uh, vocal nature of the actors, shouldn't that be sufficient? Well, let's leave that for another column.)
Getting back to the heyday of the porn soundtrack, there are quite a few good ones out there. Many have been reissued on CD; some remain vinyl rarities, but put one on at a party and see if the room gets all hot and steamy. Probably it won't, but some foot tapping or break dancing just might ensure.
Here's a list of 10 vintage porn soundtracks and compilations that would be a fine addition to any music collection. And, you never know, but they just might help you score.

On the second night of Moodie Black's tour with Puscifer, frontwoman Kristen Martinez stood in the wings of what was then known as Arizona Federal Theatre, ready to kick off their set in Phoenix with "Death in LA (Pt. 1)," a track off their 2014 album, Nausea.

And then she realized her mic wasn't working.

"Whenever we've played Phoenix, we've had so many disastrous shows. And ever since we go back on tour to Phoenix, most of the time, something goes terribly wrong," Martinez says. "It became a joke: We're playing Phoenix, so some technical glitch is going to happen."

She didn't let it faze her — in fact, it was quite the opposite.

"In that moment, when that happened, I was so happy. I started smiling and I was so assured," Martinez says. "It was the most bizarre experience because I was like, this is what I was waiting for and this has happened."

Embracing the unexpected is par for the course for Martinez, who grew up in Phoenix and who is returning for a show at The Rhythm Room on Wednesday, October 19.

Born in El Paso, Texas, Martinez moved to town when she was 5. In high school, she was drawn to the world of hip-hop and started making music. Her first forays stuck closer to traditional rap, although she says she didn't find acceptance in the local scene.

"I thought that if you were good at what you did, people would embrace you and take you on and you'd have opportunities," she recalls. "But I realized that that's not what it was like, that these people were pretending that they were open and welcoming, and you'd meet them and then they'd be assholes. That kind of disillusioned me. It made me want to be everything that those people weren't, and be authentic to myself."

For Martinez, that meant a musical evolution that took her from more traditional hip-hop to Moodie Black's unique sound of dark, grimy, entrancing noise rap.

It didn't go over well in a lot of the Valley's hip-hop spaces, Martinez recalls.

"We started making crazier, louder, noisier, more abrasive music in hip-hop, and that made us more like outliers in Phoenix. People weren't really ready for that. We'd clear rooms instantly playing in Phoenix back in the day at hip-hop shows," she says.

In the mid-2000s, Martinez left Phoenix for Minneapolis. Her partner, Jamee Varda, is from Minnesota, and Martinez was seeking a more accepting music scene than she found here. She and bandmate Sean Lindahl built Moodie Black into a musical act that didn't necessarily click with everyone, but developed its own cult following.

They were preparing to tour to promote their 2020 album, Fuzz , and then the COVID-19 pandemic happened. Like pretty much every musician in the world, they had to pivot. For Lindahl and Martinez, that meant opening a Tex-Mex restaurant.

MB Foodhouse is a highly celebrated eatery inspired by the food Martinez remembers her Mexican grandmother cooking for the family. A peek at the menu shows a selection of tacos for breakfast and beyond, chilaquiles, taquitos, and more. Martinez and Lindahl started the business as a series of pop-ups, then moved into a popular Minneapolis food hall. (Varda designed the restaurant's eye-catching, surreal wolf logo.)
