MIRAMAR — Behind the screen, it was Andres Camilo Ruiz . But to the minors he sent child pornography to and exploited from, Ruiz was a 12-year-old girl named “June,” court records say .
From November 2018 through May 2019, Ruiz, 31, of Miramar, used several social media platforms under the false identity of a 12-year-old girl to bait children across the country to send him videos depicting child pornography, federal prosecutors said .
Ruiz was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison and a lifetime on supervised release for producing child pornography, enticement of a minor and possession and distribution of child pornography . He will also pay restitution to his victims, prosecutors said .
The case began when FBI Miami investigators discovered that a Kik account with the user name “juninhopermano,” with an IP address associated with an AT&T customer in Miramar, sent an image depicting child pornography, according to court records .
In May 2019, Ruiz admitted to law enforcement officers that he used his phone to send and receive child pornography but refused to let officers search his phone, court records say . Once officials obtained a warrant to search his phone, they found he traded videos and photos with several minor girls on social media platforms including Kik, Snapchat, WhatsApp and Cheez .
Ruiz coerced one minor victim in April 2018 to send him sexually explicit videos by sending a sexually explicit video of another minor girl and sent a text message saying, “make a video like mine please,” court records say . Ruiz messaged over 500 times with the 12-year-old victim for almost a year .
Court records mention three other victims who were contacted by Ruiz under the guise of “June,” using the same tactic to trick the minors . One victim was 8 years old .
Prosecutors said Ruiz exploited more than 50 children . More than 1,100 images and videos of child pornography were found on his phone and cloud account, prosecutors said .

The police in central Assam’s Nagaon district arrested two minor “porn addicts” who stoned a six-year-old girl to death for resisting sexual abuse .
An eight-year-old boy was also arrested for abetting the crime along with the parents of one of the two boys — both 11 — for trying to suppress the incident and tamper with evidence .
The girl was killed on October 18 at a village under the Uluoni police station . Found lying unconscious inside the toilet of a stone-crushing mill, she was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital .
Sub Divisional Police Officer Mrinmoy Das said the victim was a next-door neighbour of the three accused, who are related .
“The two 11-year-olds were porn addicts, seemed mature beyond their age and capable of execution of a gruesome crime . One of the minors, who studies at an English medium school, wanted to have a physical relationship with the victim but she resisted,” he said .
“He attacked her with a stone after she said she would tell her parents about his misbehaviour . The other 11-year-old boy also hit her with a stone and she died,” Mr . Das said, adding that the eight-year-old helped the other two dispose of the body .
The parents of the first 11-year-old were arrested for trying to hush up the crime and tamper with evidence, the police officer said .
“The boy was using his father’s smartphone . We found pornographic materials in the phone’s browsing history . He used the phone for his online classes but got addicted to watching porn and would show the X-rated contents to the other two, his cousins,” Mr . Das said .
The boys were sent to juvenile home on Thursday while the arrested parents are likely to be remanded to judicial custody, the police said .
Nagaon SP Anand Mishra said the incident underlined the need for family or social intervention and institutional guidance to children exposed to the ills of pornographic or violent content available online .
Jayanta Das, a Guwahati-based psychiatrist, blamed the incident on “abuse and overuse” of technology and lack of parental guidance with modern-day parents tending to let even infants be entertained with mobile phones instead of telling them stories or spending quality time with them .
“The pandemic too has created a situation where the parents are compelled to hand the mobile phone over to their children for online classes,” he told The Hindu .
He advised parents and adults to use mobile phones responsibly as children tend to imitate their actions .
“Access to porn has become very easy . This has hugely affected our children . The roles of parents and teachers have become very important,” the psychiatrist said .

Two 11-year-old 'porn addicts' have been arrested in India after they allegedly stoned a six-year-old girl to death for refusing to perform sex acts they had watched on their parents' phones .
The juveniles allegedly became porn addicts while attending school classes online via their parents' phones, as they were able to access adult content and became obsessed with what they saw .
The six-year-old girl, a neighbour of her attackers, was found unconscious close to her house in Kaliabor, in the Indian state of Assam on October 18 and was rushed to hospital, but was later pronounced dead .
Authorities arrested the two juveniles on Wednesday last week, along with another eight-year-old who is thought to have helped the children murder the young girl .
All three juveniles have been sent to the Jorhat juvenile correctional facility awaiting trial, as children are seen as having criminal responsibility from the age of seven in India .
It comes after a report by the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) found that India was the world's largest consumer of porn via smartphones in 2019 .

Kaliabor police officer Mrinmoy Das provided a statement shortly after the arrests .
Two of the boys first tried to replicate the pornographic acts they had been watching and tried to molest the neighbour's girl .
'When she resisted they hit her head with a stone and carried her to a toilet where they hit her again with a stone on her chest . The third child stood guard outside the toilet .'
Porn website Pornhub .com reported that India was the third-largest consumer of porn in the world in 2017-2018, before the Indian government introduced a blanket ban on the website and 800 other adult content platforms in late 2018 .
Despite this, the IANS report found that India was the world's largest consumer of porn via smartphones in 2019, while data released by Pornhub last year showed that traffic to the website from India jumped by 95 percent during the first three weeks of coronavirus lockdown in March .
Though the government's ban on the website still exists, users are still able to access content using virtual private network (VPN) services to hide their browsing location .
According to a report by Top10VPN in November 2019, the number of downloads of VPNs in India increased by 405 percent in a year since October 2018 .

The statistics are emblematic of growing concerns around porn addiction in India according to several experts, who are calling for a more developed sex education programme in the country with the world's largest youth population .
Dr Samir Parikh, director of mental health and behavioural sciences at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi, said: 'Children need to learn to critically evaluate whatever messages they receive, understand the motives and, most importantly, distinguish what is real from fiction .'
Meanwhile, Dr Sameer Malhotra, director of the department of mental health and behavioural sciences at Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, believes that young people are particularly prone to developing porn addiction as their behaviour during their developmental years is often more compulsive .
'Excessive porn viewing could be reflective of compulsive traits and behaviours in an individual .
'Age appropriate and sensitively handled sex education can help in preventing risky behaviour, addressing myths associated with sexual issues,' Dr Malhotra said .

Some 10% of the visitors to porn video sites are less than 10 years old, Bitdefender research shows .
Most of the websites ask users to confirm they are 18 or older, but they cannot verify the real age of the visitors .
Sites most visited by children under 10 include xvideos, xnxx, and pornhub, according to internal intelligence of the Parental Control feature of Bitdefender's security solutions .
“The research shows that, unless they are carefully supervised by their parents, children start visiting porn websites from an early age,” Bitdefender's Senior e-Threat Analyst, Bogdan Botezatu says . “While porn sites only formally restrict minors, parents can easily take simple measures by installing security solutions with a Parental Control tool that can block access to unauthorized areas .”
