Saying safety is its top priority, Pornhub announced it has purged all content uploaded by unverified users from its platform and banned nearly all downloads . The moves were part of several made by the adult site to crack down on the use of their platform to enable human trafficking and child sexual abuse.
“Today, we are taking major steps to further protect our community,” Pornhub announced in a statement. “Going forward, we will only allow properly identified users to upload content. We have banned downloads.”
The moves come as a result of a review of the site’s policies by an outside group of experts. The group was empowered by Pornhub to make recommendations on how the site could eliminate “all illegal content” and create a program “that sets the standard for the technology industry.”
“We have made some key expansions to our moderation process, and we recently launched a Trusted Flagger Program with dozens of non-profit organizations,” Pornhub announced. “Earlier this year, we also partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and next year we will issue our first transparency report.” Some have said that the move has wiped out over 60% of the content on the platform, which is one of the largest adult sites on the web.
Going forward, only content from verified partners or those within the Model Program will be permitted. Downloads have been banned with exceptions for paid downloads from within the Model Program. Pornhub will use its fingerprint identification technology to prevent content from previously banned users. The site will also expand moderation with the new Red Team to self-moderate and flag content deemed inappropriate for the site. They also launched a Trusted Flagger Program that empowers non-profit partners to alert moderators when they encounter illegal content.
The content itself will not necessarily be gone from the site for good. Instead, all unverified content will be reviewed. The new verification process will begin next year.
The move comes on the heels of a story in the New York Times that featured interviews with child sex abuse victims who had their videos uploaded to sites like Pornhub. The news left the industry shaken and looking for ways to respond more forcefully to the crisis.

News

If you took a casual look for your favorite Internet porn this week, you may have noticed a much, MUCH smaller selection. Well, it’s not your imagination.
Pornhub , one of the largest adult sites in the world, just deleted a whopping 10.6 MILLION videos! That’s over 78.5% of its content!
Everything that wasn’t verified content — you know, the little blue checkmark, just like on Twitter — got the axe. Only videos from official content partners remain. No unverified videos remain, and no unverified uploaders can put anything else on the site. That put the number of videos on the site from around 13.5 million to just 2.9 million as of this writing.
Well, it all started on December 4 when The New York Times published an op-ed about child sexual abuse victims who saw videos of themselves uploaded onto the site. Less than a week later Pornhub announced a change in policy in which they would no longer allow unverified users from uploading videos, but it was too late to stop the tide of bad press.
MasterCard and Visa announced they would no longer process payments to the site. Visa banned all of Pornhub’s sister sites on the MindGeek network, including Redtube , Youporn , Xtube , and Brazzers .
So in addition to stopping new uploads, Pornhub went for the nuclear option and “suspended” all videos from unverified sources. In a statement this week, they explained:
“As part of our policy to ban unverified uploaders, we have now also suspended all previously uploaded content that was not created by content partners or members of the Model Program. This means every piece of Pornhub content is from verified uploaders, a requirement that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have yet to institute.”
They also pointed out the actual number of instances child sexual abuse material were quite small relatively — again, citing Facebook and its much worse record:
“Leading non-profit organizations and advocacy groups acknowledge our efforts to date at combating illegal content have been effective. Over the last three years, Facebook self-reported 84 million instances of child sexual abuse material. During that same period, the independent, third-party Internet Watch Foundation reported 118 incidents on Pornhub. That is still 118 too many, which is why we are committed to taking every necessary action.”
But Facebook isn’t facing a hit to the wallet right now. And Pornhub is. Why? Well, according to their own announcement, they’re being “targeted” by “ organizations dedicated to abolishing pornography, banning material they claim is obscene, and shutting down commercial sex work.” They claim the two groups leading the charge are the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (formerly known as Morality in Media) and Exodus Cry/TraffickingHub.
Is this all just anti-porn and sex work sentiment hiding behind charges of child sexual exploitation, something no one can argue with? It does seem like Facebook is getting away awfully clean considering those “84 million instances of child sexual abuse material.” (Seriously, WTF is up with that??)
On the one hand, this seems like a positive move. Making it that much harder to get child sexual abuse material, as well as revenge porn, pirated content, and other unsavory material, out there is always a good thing.
However, we’re now quite skeptical about the reasons behind the new charge.
What we do know for sure is for many amateur porn creators who have not yet been verified, this is yet another huge loss of revenue, following the invasion of celebs and influencers into OnlyFans earlier this year.
What do YOU think of this big move, Perezcious readers?

PORNHUB has deleted over 80 per cent of its videos from the site, including nearly nine million overnight.
The popular pornography site stripped its content down to just 2.9 million uploads in its latest crackdown to contain only legally-abiding videos.
Canadian-owned Pornhub deleted over ten million videos from its site - around 80 per cent of its overall uploads - in under two days following allegations of hosting child abuse content.
The videos were all from unverified users, only leaving uploads from known sources.
Since launching in 2007, videos can be uploaded by anyone who has signed up to Pornhub, leading to millions of amateur content.
But the New York Times published allegations on December 4 that the site monetised from child rapes and revenge pornography among other unruly footage.
The report claims that the mother of a 15-year-old girl who went missing from Florida later found her daughter on Pornhub in 58 different sex videos.
The paper also alleged that the site had avoided punishment, despite failing to warn the authorities of the content.
Since, Pornhub has looked to ensure that there are no videos containing child sexual abuse.
In a statement, they said: "Any assertion that we allow CSAM (child sexual abuse material) is irresponsible and flagrantly untrue.
Pornhub revealed that only content from its official partners or users signed up to its Model Program initiative will be available on its site.
The porn website's parent company MindGeek also said: "Every piece of Pornhub content is from verified uploaders, a requirement that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have yet to institute."
Yet, they hope to allow other users to submit their videos that will be posted following 'successful completion of identification protocol'.
Pornhub also plan to improve its content moderation with the newly established Red Team, where all uploads will be reviewed manually by humans along with automated detection technologies.
Two of the biggest card suppliers faced immediate calls to halt payments to Pornhub following the publication of the report.
Mastercard have since stopped credit card payments to Pornhub following its own investigation that found violations of standards prohibiting unlawful conduct - while they will also look into other sites for possible illegal content.
Visa has also revealed they are suspending card payments to the pornography website as they continue their own review.

(Reuters) - Pornhub said on Monday it had pulled content uploaded by unverified users from its platform, days after Mastercard and Visa halted payments on the sex videos site over allegations of child sex-abuse content.
The move was a part of its policy announced last week where Pornhub banned users' ability to download videos and said it would allow only certain partner accounts to upload content, following a New York Times column that said many videos posted on the adult website depicted child abuse.
"It is clear that Pornhub is being targeted not because of our policies and how we compare to our peers, but because we are an adult content platform," the company said in the blog post late on Sunday.
It also said it was being targeted by organizations such as the National Center on Sexual Exploitation and Exodus Cry/TraffickingHub, which are dedicated to abolishing pornography, banning material they claim is obscene, and shutting down commercial sex work.
Last week, Mastercard said it was permanently ending the use of its cards on the platform after its investigation confirmed the presence of illegal content on the platform. Visa had said it was suspending payments till an investigation was completed.
