These days, it wouldn’t be a Hallmark holiday without a porn site somehow chiming in. Naturally, Valentine’s Day (the holiday of relationship guilt) is a perfect fit for Pornhub and its penchant for interactive marketing initiatives. This year, Pornhub is offering a few different options for those looking to splice porn-related activities into their giving of stuffed bears and candy hearts.
As in the past, for this year’s forced-romantic faux holiday Pornhub will be offering its Pornhub premium service to users for free for the day. Obviously, this is a good way to grab new subscribers, like when there was a free Cinemax preview on cable back in the late 1990s. Last year, over 3mm accounts utilized Pornhub Premium on Valentine’s Day. It is unknown how many ended up subscribing and how many were just single people taking advantage of another promotion aimed at couples. To Pornhub, your relationship status doesn’t really matter.
“We’re about getting people in the mood – it’s something we do for 120 million site visitors every day. What gets people in the mood more than Pornhub?” said Corey Price, Vice President, Pornhub in a press release. “That’s why we’re making Pornhub Premium free for anyone and everyone to access for the holiday. Whether you are spending the holiday with a significant other or loving yourself solo, we want to lend a helping hand to ensure everyone is feeling the love this Valentine’s Day. ”
New to this year’s porn-valentine celebration is a Valentine’s Day video generator (found on this generally SFW landing page) that enables users to send personalized video messages. The personalized messages feature adult entertainers such as Asa Akira, Rod Jackson and Ryan Creamer.
Not to be left out, porn site CamSoda is launching its own video message service called “Camo Cards”. Aimed at users whose significant others are in the military, these “Camo Cards” allow users to book and send personalized video greetings and/or shout outs starring a selection of cam and adult models. The service is free of charge and launching on Valentine’s day.
After you take a break from playing X-rated video games, you can send your personalized message (not to your mom you savage) and head down to the Pornhub pop-up store.
If you live in NYC, Pornhub will be running a pop-up store for two days (February 13th-14th, 9am - 11pm EST) down in the Bowery. Maybe it’s the Lower East Side. Frankly, I have no idea. It’s at 91 Allen Street. You tell me what sub-universe of NYC that is.
Pornhub Brand Ambassador Asa Akira will make an appearance (along with a random assortment of models from Pornhub’s model program), and the store will be selling traditional Valentine’s Day gifts branded with the Pornhub logo. So if you ever wanted to get your sweetheart a Pornhub branded mug and some flowers, now’s your chance. All purchases will come with a gift card for one month of free Pornhub Premium, again solidifying the fact that all this marketing is just a sales funnel. Which is what marketing is, so, checks out.
Pornhub has entered a strange, paradoxical point in its existence. While it is still focused on being the strongest free and premium porn site on the internet, it is facing all the rightfully placed scrutiny that comes with that status. Yet, here we are talking about a cheeky Valentine’s Day initiative and a pop-up store.
Like any large tech organization, the two sides of this business are becoming more apparent by the day. In that, which should we focus on? If you can manage both, focus on both. Like Google or Facebook, enjoy what should be enjoyed but keep an eye on the darkness in the background lest it become all-consuming. Advice that Pornhub itself might want to consider.
