Though their rights are protected under the U.S. constitution just like everybody else’s, many states across the country are still trying to pass legislation that discriminate against transgender people. Many of these laws are coming from fear and a lack of understanding. A group of moms and the Trans United Fund have shown in a new video that the fear-based legislation has real and awful consequences.
According to the video, more than 50 pieces of legislation in 20 states are threatening the rights, and the lives, of transgender people. These laws include the North Carolina law that prohibits transgender people from using the bathroom that matches their gender identity, on which the governor of the state must decide today if he will comply with a federal mandate to not enforce the bill, or pursue a lawsuit against the Justice Department that defends the anti-LGBTQ law.
These laws don’t happen in a vacuum, though. If you’re not transgender, you might not feel the impact of the discriminatory legislation, but transgender people feel it every day. In the video, moms of transgender children voice those impacts, ones that put them in fear of losing their children.
The hateful laws, the mom say, contribute to the astronomical suicide and murder rates of transgender people. In 2016 alone, 9 transgender people have been murdered. In 2015, a report showed that the murder of transgender people in the United States had reached a historical high. On top of that, we know that 41% of transgender people will attempt suicide. A lack of acceptance and hateful discrimination against transgender people definitely contribute to rates of depression, anxiety and suicide.
A lot of this could be remedied if we took a moment to get to know some transgender people. While it might not be as big a deal for the current generation, your parents likely weren’t exposed to as many different identities as you are. They probably didn’t learn about transgender people in school, and they might not even know what it really means to be transgender outside of old-school stereotypes from movies or television.
In fact, the mom of one transgender teen in the video said she had to learn what it meant to be transgender when her son came out to her.
“When he said, ‘I’m transgender,’ it was, ‘ok, I need to figure out what that means,’” the mom said.
Of course, nothing makes you understand something like having a family member go through it. These moms are now totally supportive of their transgender children, and a lot of it is because they know them. They see that transgender people are not some big scary mystery, but real and regular people just trying to live their lives.
This video is a great resource to show adults in your life who have trouble understanding non-binary gender identities. As with anything, education is key to understanding, and sometimes even parents need that extra push to learn.
