Girl In The Picture premiered on Netflix on the 6th of July 2022, and the chilling true story will have you on the edge of your seat.
Netflix crime documentaries always have you feeling a certain type of way – especially when you find out they are based on a true story.
Adding to Netflix’s documentary library is Girl In The Picture . The production tells the story of a young girl who’s picture was sent to the police, and they immediately knew something was wrong.
Without further ado, lets take a look at this unsettling true story.
Girl in the Picture focuses on Suzanne Marie Sevakis, a young girl who was controlled by her adoptive father. She was known by the name of Sharon Marshall.
Sharon’s identity was unknown by the world – even herself. Her presence was known after she was found unconscious at the side of the road at just 20 years old. It was initially believed she died as a result of a hit and run.
She later passed away due to her injuries, leaving the question – what exactly happened to Sharon Marshall?
If you haven’t watched the new series yet, I’d look away now, as we’re going to explore the story.
The story of The Girl in the Picture began when she was abducted by her stepfather Franklin Delano Floyd along with her three other siblings. This happened after her mother, Sandi Chipman, was serving a 30-day prison sentence.
As Floyd was their legal guardian at the time, the police refused to get involved and take any action on the situation. Franklin kept Suzanne by his side, renaming her as Sharon Marshall so that she could not be discovered by her mother – or anybody else.
Reportedly, Suzanne was extremely intelligent and wanted to become an aerospace engineer. However, this all changed when she fell pregnant and her stepfather put an end to her dream of attending college. Instead, Franklin forced her to work as an exotic dancer to make money for himself.
Just as you thought the story couldn’t get anymore chilling, Franklin went on to marry Suzanne. In 1988, Suzanne gave birth to her son, Michael Hughes. Two years later, whilst she went out to buy some food for Michael, Suzanne was found unconscious at the side of a road. She later died due to the extent of her injuries. It was also reported that Franklin was not the father of Michael.
Although the authorities assumed she had been hit by a car, this was not the case. The police later found that the trauma she had suffered was not consistent with a car accident. Since then, Franklin has never admitted to the murder of Suzanne, and he was never charged for her death.
After Suzanne’s death in 1994, Franklin abducted her son, Michael whilst he was at school. Not only did he kidnap Michael, but he also shot and killed him. Although the American murderer admitted to the killing of Michael, his body was never found.
Franklin Delano Floyd was also found guilty of the death of Cheryl Ann Commesso, and was sentenced to death. The 79-year-old is currently serving his sentence at a prison in Florida, where he awaits the death penalty.
It’s no surprise that the chilling documentary has received hundreds of comments across social media. Some viewers have claimed it’s the most shocking storyline they have seen on the streaming service.
One Twitter user wrote: “I’ve watched many messed up crime documentaries yet “Girl in the picture” on Netflix managed to keep me shocked and horrified throughout.”
Another added : “Girl in the Picture on @netflix is one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen. What a devastating life. My heart goes out to everyone who was impacted, especially Megan. There are some really evil people in the world.”
