Tumblr said last year it was banning "adult content" from its platform in order to make "a better, more positive" place. But the policy change caused some users to abandon the site .
The new policy went into effect December of 2018 , and resulted in the deletion of any content portraying " real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples." Some hoped that the sale of Tumblr to a new company in August would result in the ban's reversal, but the new owners have said they're keeping the ban on NSFW (not safe for work) content in place.
Reaction to Tumblr's announcement was swift and critical across social media. More than 665,000 people have signed a Change.org petition to "make Tumblr rescind their adult content ban."
For many, Tumblr was seen as a safe space used for exploration and self-expression.
" I frequently got messages from folks who saw my work and said it helped them understand part of themselves better," an anonymous Tumblr user told The Washington Post . "That's primarily what I saw on Tumblr, in my curated bubble: women and LGBT creators exploring sexual concepts that they didn't feel comfortable sharing anywhere else."
Dozens of new Twitter accounts popped up from former Tumblr users who said they were switching social media sites as a result of the new policy. But while Twitter is mainly a platform for short text blurbs and sharing links, Tumblr emphasizes blogging with a mix of images, videos, GIFs, and creative writing.
Other blogging platforms reported seeing an influx of new users since Tumblr announced its policy change.
Here are some alternatives to Tumblr emerging in light of the ban on adult content:
While the design of Newgrounds may be old-school (it's been around since 1999), the site prides itself on being wholly independent where it allows "everything for everyone."
"Some of you might be dismayed at the thought of more lewd content on NG while others are super excited," a post welcoming Tumblr users says. "The good news for everyone is that we're seeing a lot of REALLY TALENTED artists joining up and not everything they post is NSFW."
Pillowfort.io is a user-friendly space that emerged from people " complaining about the limitations and flaws of these (other) sites, yet lamenting that there was nowhere better to go."
Unfortunately, Pillowfort is in beta and costs a small fee to join, but you can try out the platform as a demo user on Pillowfort's website. You may have issues accessing it though — I got an error message when I tried to set up my trial because of the unusually "high amount of traffic" the site is getting.
Dreamwidth is a free platform for "creative folk" who want to share artwork and creative writing.
"W e'd like to take a moment to reassure all y'all that we have your backs ," a post welcoming Tumblr users says. " To the newcomers: we're happy to have you join us. Welcome aboard!"
Mastodon is a decentralized social platform, meaning that its thousands individual communities exist on separate servers, but they all exist under one network. In response to Tumblr, Mastodon created a post with reasons to choose its platform as your new social media site.
"It's a completely decentralised social network which combines the best bits of Twitter and Tumblr, but the technology is structured in a way whereby it can never be shut down," a post advocating the switch to Mastodon says.

Don't worry, you can find a similarly sex-positive community elsewhere.
On December 17, 2018 Tumblr banned adult content on their platform. The move was rumored to be a knee-jerk response to Apple removing Tumblr from its App Store over failing to adequately filter out child pornography. While that is certainly an understandable and valid reason for removing the app, instead of improving their filtering system, Tumblr decided to ban all adult content altogether. In doing so, they destroyed a massive social media community and outlet where people, especially underrepresented communities, could freely express their sexuality.
I was one of those people. I was in the midst of ending a sexless and passionless marriage, and while I never took much pleasure in sex anyway, I knew others did, which gave me a resounding and incessant urge to find out what I was missing. But how would I even start? What turned me on? How would I find it and articulate it not just to myself, but to a partner?
Mainstream porn sites only offered clips of brightly lit, conventionally-attractive people with hard bodies having what seemed to be a very athletic, staged, and mechanical style of sex. And the categories I could choose from (like “Babysitter”) along with the pop-up ads pushing pills to make my "dick harder" didn’t help entice me either.
A lot of these sites belonged to women and communities who were often not depicted in mainstream adult entertainment as multi-dimensional.
But when I happened upon Tumblr, that all changed. There were blogs that explored a particular side of female-centric sexual pleasure—as well as any number of sexual interests or preferences. A lot of these sites belonged to women and communities who were often not depicted in mainstream adult entertainment as multi-dimensional. Seeing people of color, and/or bigger, disabled, or trans bodies in sensual scenes that didn't make their race, gender, or body the plot line was revolutionary –they were simply participating in pleasure like everyone else. Aspects of humanity that mainstream porn fetishized, Tumblr adult sites normalized.
I was able to discreetly and safely view other people’s sexual tastes and interests, take what I liked from it, fold it into my own pastiche of sexual pleasure, and disregard the rest. In fact, the more I looked at others’ sexual expression, the more confident and validated I felt in my own. Without this private outlet, I really don’t know when–or if–I would have realized the dormant sexual woman living inside me that was screaming to come out.
Tumblr was revolutionary for so many women like me and others who felt disconnected to mainstream porn and found self discovery, affirmation, and connection within its platform. It’s an end of an era, but it’s also a clarion call to those who value freedom of speech and expression to speak up and fight for that right.
So, where can women like me go from here? There is hope that some smart, enterprising tech folks will come up with a similar, maybe even better platform in the near future. For now, here are some possible substitutes for those who are over 18:
While it's not as easy to scroll through visuals as you did on Tumblr, Reddit's NSFW subreddit might be a good alternative.
Timbr lets you back up any old Tumblr blogs so nothing is ever truly lost.
Mastadon promises a safer-feeling browsing experience.
Swarmr vows to be committed to free speech and gender equity.
Give New.Tumbl a go. Very straightforward!
The other alternative, if you're willing to pay some money, are ethical, feminist porn sites, which I personally use. Here are some recs, depending on what you're looking for:
Bright Desire has been producing artistic, body-positive fare since 2012.
Erika Lust’s XConfessions lets users submit what they want to see, and then recreates their ideas with top-notch cinematography.
FrolicMe is perfect for lush, gorgeously-shot films.
CrashPad Series and PinkLabel.TV are both excellent options.
I’ve also been recommending Tristan Taormino DVDs and jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex for people who want to learn more (and watch) different kinds of sex.

Tumblr was a place to express not just sexuality, but an 'alternative' sexuality not popular in the mainstream.

Fifteen years ago, Tumblr changed the internet forever. Generation t examines its complex, colorful legacy.
When porn performer Arabelle Raphael entered the adult industry over a decade ago, she found it difficult to find work because of her tattoos. "I didn't fit the beauty standards of the porn industry back then," she told Mashable.
Then, in 2010, she joined the microblog site Tumblr — and she found her audience.
"I just…built everything, my following and everything like that by myself," she said, "just running a Tumblr blog."
For Raphael and many others, Tumblr was a place to express not just sexuality, but an "alternative" sexuality not popular in the mainstream at the time: tattooed porn, LGBTQ porn, and fetish porn, sometimes inspired by a beloved TV or movie.
Prior to Tumblr's "adult content" ban in 2018, a swift decision by the company to remove all sexually explicit posts, the site was a hub for sex workers, queer kids, and anyone else who wanted to display their sexual interests alongside different aspects of their personality. There was nowhere else on the internet like Tumblr — and, unfortunately, due to current and potential legislation, that's likely to stay the case.
"There was a certain aesthetic" to Tumblr porn, explained sex worker and porn performer King Noire , who used Tumblr alongside his partner and fellow performer, Jet Setting Jasmine .
The term "Tumblr porn" is sometimes akin to "pretty porn," or explicit images with soft lighting and exquisite posing. While it's possible to find such stylistic content elsewhere, it boomed on Tumblr.
"People actually put some time, energy, and effort into something beautiful that might have just been erotic art," Noire continued. "Most people might not even label it 'pornography.'"
There was so much explicit content on Tumblr, pretty or not, that Noire didn't know there was anything else on the social network. Indeed there was; Tumblr was home to much "SFW" art and writing, "aesthetic" content , regular ol' shitposting, and fandom communities. The latter would oft delve in pornography themselves.
"I really associate Tumblr with fans and fandom," said Maggie MacDonald, a Ph.D. student at the University of Toronto researching pornography platforms. Tumblr was a place where people — especially queer teens — could view porn that wasn't on what MacDonald called "straight sites" like Pornhub. This porn was, by contrast, more loving, more queer, or even just a bit "weirder."
Porn often bled into Tumblr fandom communities. By, say, GIFing a glance between two characters (like the brothers on Supernatural ), Tumblr users decontextualized moments and rendered them sensual.
"The fans on Tumblr had the ability to make things erotic that were not initially intended to be erotic," said MacDonald. "They sort of created their own porn. And that was really where the Tumblr fan community became pornographers themselves."
GIF porn was a cornerstone on Tumblr overall, whether connected to television or not. Actual explicit videos were often turned into GIFs, too.
"By snipping out super short moments and decontextualizing that from the rest of the piece, Tumblr porn — GIF porn — allowed fans to read into the grain of what the original porn was saying," MacDonald explained.
Seconds from a porn scene were extracted from their original states and rendered however the editor wanted: slower or faster, black and white or oversaturated. Sometimes, faceless porn GIFs served as fantasies of mainstream celebrities or characters.
GIFs weren't the only way Tumblr fans expressed their porny love for their favorite "ships" (relationships); there was fanfiction, fan art, and photo edits compiled into "sets." Fans queered a TV show that wasn't canonically LGBTQ at all. They spoke eroticism into existence, MacDonald said — and they shared it with other fans.
This speaks to one reason why Tumblr porn was unique: It didn't come from the top down, or from some webmaster. Tumblr porn was created and shared by the users. Rather than a commodity, porn on Tumblr (especially fandom-related porn) was a community effort.
Furthermore, Tumblr had a seamless blend between porn and nonpornographic content. On one's "dash" — dashboard or feed — X-rated porn GIFs and G-rated "squees" over a favorite couple existed in tandem. Sometimes, the two appeared on the same post.
"It was one of those spots where you can just show all the different sides of yourself," Noire said of Tumblr, "and people who are looking for whatever your niche or whatever your style was, could then just gravitate towards it."
MacDonald ventures that one of the reasons Tumblr was so successful pre-2018 was because it allowed its users to contain multitudes. With a single user identity, someone o
