Porn has got a bit a bad rep over the years. From accusations that it’s rewiring people’s brains and perceptions on sex, to causing erectile dysfunction.
Then there was the time when the government banned porn that focused on female pleasure . That wasn’t great either.
Luckily, other research suggests that it might not be as bad you think. We’ve compiled together some of the scientifically suggested benefits of pornography that might put you a little at ease.
Here are six reasons why pornography might be good for you after all.
There might be evidence to suggest that porn can lead to an actual sex addiction (though that’s argued, a lot, among experts). But for those whose sex drive might be a little on the low side, maybe it could help.
This study by the University of California found that a positive correlation between the time spent watching porn and the desire to have sex.
‘This pattern suggests that those who view more visual sexual stimuli (VSS) are likely to have a higher sexual drive,’ researchers wrote in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The same study also looked at porn’s effect on erectile dysfunction. It found no relationship between the numbers of hours watched weekly and erectile functioning with a partner.
So if you’re having problems getting hard in the bedroom, then your porn habit isn’t to blame.
You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking this a common benefit of most sexual activity . But yes, watching porn can do it too.
Looking at sexy pictures can help to decrease stress, according to research by the Carnegie Mellon University .
When your body gets stressed, it produces a hormone called cortisol that might disrupt the brain’s problem-solving abilities.
So in case you were wondering why you got a mind-blank everytime you panicked or felt really stressed during an important exam or interview, that’s why – it’s cortisol’s fault.
But the study found that men who looked at hot pictures of women performed 50 per cent better on a math portion of a stress test compared to guys who looked at non-sexual photos.
Researchers concluded therefore looking at the pictures reduced the stress response in the brain.
Porn can be a way to discover your sexuality in a way that has fewer emotional or health consequences on you or other people.
‘Porn can really help you explore what your likes and dislikes are,’ Dr. Madeleine Castellanos, New York psychiatrist and sex therapist, told Mic .
‘You can really discover what resonates with you sexually.’
It can be then become a tool to broach the subject of your kinks with a sexual partner, so ‘I saw this which I’d like to try…’ becomes part of a relationship.
For some, the realms of hardcore porn might be a place they don’t dare roam. Whips and chains can be a bit frightening.
But turns out, it might actually reap more benefits than problems.
This Danish study of both men and women found a positive relationship between the amount of hardcore porn watched and impact on participants’ sex lives, attitudes towards sex, their perceptions and attitudes towards members of the opposite sex.
With the prevalence of slapping and ejaculating on women in the fantasies of men who watch porn according to University of Arkansas , you might be right to be concerned it can be a bit derogatory towards women.
But the growth of the ethical porn movement could help us put our minds to rest.
The Ethical Porn Partnership , for example, is a coalition of porn producers, performers, consumers and supported committed to creating responsibly-made porn.
So you can watch porn comfortably without feeling you’re contributing towards the sexual degradation of women. Huzzah.

Sometimes, it seems that porn will be under intense scrutiny by nudity-fearing public officials until the end of time. Whether or not it has positive, negative, or any effects on the general population in general will be pontificated on until a general consensus is made and ultimately abandoned. What does porn do to us? Does it make us into better lovers or turn us into zombies?
Some suggest the latter. In a study conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development , 64 adult males reported their pornography consumption for a short period of time and then had their brains studied. They found a significant correlation with pornography intake and gray matter volume in the part of the brain associated with reward sensitivity.
However, some studies say that there are benefits. Carnegie Mellon University says it can relieve stress and a Danish study concluded that pornography has “had primarily a positive effect on various aspects of their lives.” Since there are so many different science-backed sides to this story, we decided to take our opinion to a source who knows porn more than the average person — a porn star.
Joanna Angel runs BurningAngel.com , a massively popular porno site with an alt-twist in which she directs, produces, and stars in videos of her own. She’s won numerous AVN awards for her work, briefly wrote a sex advice column for Spin , and acts in independent movies on the side. Joanna Angel knows porn, which is why we wanted to get her opinion on how good (or bad) porn is for us.
AskMen: Have people told you how your work has affected them?
Joanna Angel: “I have a lot of couples that are fans. A lot of couples come to see me when I do appearances. It's kind of interesting because you really can't choose your own fame… I never actually set out to make porn for couples at all. That was never my intention.
Why? What is it about your porn that they like so much?
Just the style of the my porn is a little bit more relatable than some of other companies, you know. I don't know, I think I have this thing about me which is kind of awesome and a little almost insulting at the same time. I think people look at me having anal sex or doing these sex acts, and they're like, ‘Wow, if she can do it, I can do it too,’ because I'm not very... I don't look like a super-human. I don't know, I think a lot of girls feel not threatened by me or something, so they're cool with their husbands jerking off to me. I don't know. I think I've gotten that a lot.
They're like, ‘Oh, my husband wouldn't leave me for that girl so it's cool.’ I don't know what it is. I'm just not very glamorous and I make funny faces when I have sex. I've had a lot of younger couples tell me they've watched my porn together. Husbands and wives that are older, and middle age couples that told me they have tried having a threesome or an orgy because of a movie they saw of mine.
That’s great — so, you really inspire sex.
Yeah, and sex is a difficult topic to talk about. Some people don't always talk about sex with their friends. There seems to be something about my porn that a lot of couples are like, ‘All right. They did it, we can do it too.’ For whatever reason. I like that. It always makes me very happy when I think that people can watch my stuff and do something fun in their own life.
Do you think you just inspire them to have sex? Or… is there more?
If somebody wants to wear the same clothes as me and try to mimic the same positions, then that's cool too. I just think that people will have more fun if they just kind of watch it and let their own sexual ideas roll in their brain. I also do know some of my feature movies, the parodies I make, or the movies that I have with plots and scripts and characters and stuff like that, I know people watch them together. They'll watch them like movies, and that's cool.
So people try to imitate you… is that always a good thing?
Yeah, like I said, you don't need to copy every single position that we do. There's definitely positions that we do in porn that look good for the camera, but they're not something you should need to do at home. Some of these sex positions are ones that we don't do at home.
Which one would I never do at home? I guess, is it regular cowgirl when you're looking away from the person?
People always laugh at me on set because I never remember… reverse is when she's facing the camera and you see her face and her tits, and regular is when you see her ass. Anyway, yeah, that's not that comfortable at all — it’s not very intimate.
In 2016, I think it's just a place where, if two people are curious about something and want to explore something, you can probably find it on-camera somewhere in the internet, and then, maybe it will help the two people sort of go, ‘Oh, well look at that. That exists. Someone did it. How do we feel about that now after watching that? Is that something we want to try? Is it not?" It just gives people a bigger freedom and a bigger playing field to explore things that they were too scared or nervous or awkward to bring up with their partner before.

To even ask the question of whether women watch porn is relatively rare, but to extend this question to whether porn watching is good for women is even more infrequent. Usually we are far more concerned about the effects of watching porn on men than women.
But the question of whether watching pornography enhances the sexual experiences of women (during masturbation or partnered sex) was recently addressed by psychologist Sean McNabney and colleagues with a community-based sample of nearly 2,500 women (mean age = 29) answering a survey questionnaire. Below I review the findings, and explore whether, counter to everything we might believe, straight women are more into lesbian porn than are straight men.
First, as opposed to women who refrain from watching porn during self-stimulation, women who use porn during masturbation were more likely to report having the following characteristics:
3. high levels of interest in sex with two or more sex partners
4. persistent anxiety or depression
5. masturbate more frequently and easily
McNabney and colleagues also explored an existing assumption that greater reliance on “erotic materials during masturbation is associated with poorer relationship outcomes.” Quite strikingly, their findings were the opposite. Women who were frequent viewers of porn:
1. became more easily sexually aroused
2. reached orgasm more certainly with a longer latency to orgasm
3. reported more pleasure with their orgasm
It appeared that women used pornography “to enhance orgasmic response and pleasure … with no deleterious effects on sexual functioning during partnered sex.”
An additional question—“What are women watching when they tune in to porn?”—was answered in a recent Pornhub report. It indicated “lesbian” is the most popular category for female viewers—151% more popular with women than with men. This might be surprising because one common stereotype is that men are extremely aroused by watching two women having sex; we seldom hear about what watching two women having sex does for women.
Traditionally, it is assumed that young women who make out with each other at a bar or fraternity are doing so as a showpiece for men—their sexual encounter titillates men (at least straight men) and eroticizes women. Sociologist Janelle Pham noted this public “performative bisexuality” enhances the women’s desirability and prestige, garnering the desired male attention . But the McNabney research suggests this portrayal might not be the only factor that motivates women to engage other women in public sex. Rather, perhaps they are motivated by the pleasure of the sexual encounter for them , whether men are watching or not.
Is the lesbian porn men watch, made by men for men with an emphasis on penis-in-vagina intercourse, what straight women watch? This is not likely. Women are more apt to be turned on by lesbian porn written by women for women with more episodes of clitoral stimulation, with a range of body types, non-penetrative sex, and emotional, romantic aspects.
