Pornhub decided to create the Tor mirror site to help protect the porn-viewing habits of LGBT users, whose sexual preferences can be criminalized in certain countries.

Pornhub has created a Tor mirror site, which is accessible at http://pornhubthbh7ap3u.onion/ . Visiting the link will require the Tor browser , which can help anonymize your web traffic and prevent internet service providers and government snoops from tracking your activities.
Pornhub says it created the Tor site to protect the porn-viewing habits of LGBT users, whose sexual preferences can be criminalized in certain countries. "As ill-willed hackers and compromising surveillance practices become growing concerns, it's important that we set up internal safeguards to help anonymize the online activity and communication of our users," Pornhub VP Corey Price said in a statement (Opens in a new window) .
A Tor mirror can also act as an alternative if a government has chosen to block the main Pornhub website. It's why other companies, including Facebook, The New York Times, and the BBC have also launched their own Tor mirrors over the years.
To anonymize your activities, the Tor browser ferries your connection through a network of volunteer-operated servers across the globe. On the downside, web surfing on Tor can be slow since your traffic is traveling over the various network nodes. So it isn't recommended for the impatient.
To protect users' privacy, the Tor mirror has also disabled certain features, including the ability to login as a registered user, and video uploading.
An alternative to Tor is to use a paid VPN service , which can also prevent ISPs from monitoring what sites you're visiting. It can do this by creating an encrypted internet connection with a server run by the VPN provider. Back in 2018, Pornhub jumped on the bandwagon by introducing its own product, VPNhub .

Back in 2015, the ruling politicians in India tried to block more than 800 porn websites that ‘threatened’ the morality of Indians. This decision was met with the public outcry, especially when it was discovered that websites such as CollegeHumor and 9GAG were banned as well (take a look at the full list here ). It didn’t take long for the Indian government to lift the ban and allow free access to all previously banned websites. However, the authorities have once again decided to reinstate the ban.
In a surprising turn of events, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has reviewed the previously used list and excluded certain websites from the latest ban. At the moment, 827 domains are effectively blocked as all major Internet Service Providers have already put this decision into action. Among the newly banned websites is the world’s most popular adult-oriented website, PornHub. To help their Indian users to circumvent the ban, the company has launched a mirror website – PornHub.net , which is available to all users around the world.
It doesn’t come as a surprise to see PornHub respond in such a way to the Indian government. By taking a look at this website’s 2017 insights , we can see that India is actually the third country in terms of traffic. For PornHub, this would mean losing millions of visitors and users. For Indians, this would mean losing their favorite source of adult-oriented entertainment. Still, it’s important to note that the government can also block the new domain, which is bound to happen rather sooner than later.
Aside from using the mirror website, another viable (and long-term) solution is to use a Virtual Private Network . It looks like many Indians are already aware of this option, which can be seen by the latest Google trends related to VPNs , which have spiked during the last few days.
