EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: The nude has been a staple of art for centuries. Now a new exhibition is taking the naked form to a whole new level. It is the latest work of a former French molecular biologist-turned-choreographer and artist Xavier Le Roy. It involves 18 nude performers interacting with a fully clothed public. The Australian art philanthropist John Kaldor and the Carriageworks art space in Sydney have commissioned the exhibition. David O'Shea went along to the undressed rehearsal, and a warning, as you might expect, this story does contain quite a bit of nudity.
XAVIER LE ROY, CHOREOGRAPHER/ARTIST: The purpose of the piece is to produce a situation where we do actions that unfold and transform, one into the other, and they are conceived like landscape. Here what we do is try to make a situation where you have to step in the landscape, so there is this notion of something unfolding in front of you where the form is transforming, like a landscape would do, like not with a narrative that with an aim to go somewhere, but it just unfolds. I call it exhibition in order to point out a form where the public is invited to come whenever they want and leave whenever they want, so the work addresses something that is not asking for a beginning and an end. If you say it is a performance, there is an expectation of when does it start, "Ah, I'm too late," and such things. So that's why we call it an exhibition.
JOHN KALDOR, KALDOR PUBLIC ART PROJECTS: What I admire about Zavier is that he is breaking down the barriers between dance, movement, performance and visual arts. Xavier is credited as being the first artist who took dance movement into museums, into galleries. I love it when they get together like that. It's very sculptural, it's hard to describe. That's what's interesting about it. Nudity has been part of art for thousands of years, from Egyptians to Greeks, to Romans, to paintings of the renaissance, to impressionists, to right through. It's part of what art is about. It's part of showing the body.
ANGELA YU, SCULPTURE STUDENT: And the body is just like in a static position; it kind of reminds me of how beautiful the human body is. It also kind of like interests me how for something that isn't quite choreographed, that all the performers kind of feed off each other and if anyone puts their arms or legs up, everyone starts to do it as well.
LISA HAVILAH, DIRECTOR, CARRIAGEWORKS: You don't read it as a piece of contemporary arts, you can read it in any way and what it does is actually brings the content or the ideas in the work to the fore. Normally you would engage with a piece of contemporary art in sitting in a dark theatre. In this work, it is a new way to experience choreography, dance and performance.
XAVIER LE ROY: The conversation is triggered by questions, so he we have a set of questions we try now. So today we have three questions which was, "How is ageing for you?", "How is growing for you? "How is falling in love or falling out of love for you?" And we will have other questions along the process. This is a first tryout.
DANCER: Thank you for the conversation.
DANCER: I'm going to join the group again.
DAVID O'SHEA: The visitor feels also somehow have to give in something from them because they feel like this generosity, but also what I found interesting is that this nudity, that they have - they allow themselves also to be in a certain way nude in what they can exchange with the performer in this discussion.
PARTICIPANT: I had two conversations. The first one was falling in and out of love, and the second one was the passage of time, and both were really amazing conversations. One felt a little bit more just really innocent and sweet, and the other one kind of opened a whole barrage of deeper questions, existential questions. Just interacting with the public on that level, that level of intimacy, I guess is quite special.
LISA HAVILAH: One of the things that is really interesting is that this work is being made right now as we speak, so the artists are still defining how they will engage with the audience, so that's something that we are yet to learn.

The great dames of burlesque -- Sally Rand, Gypsy Rose Lee -- boasted a signature style on- and offstage, reflecting broader-than-life personalities.

Given that photography was still an emerging technology, an emerging creative medium, when these "working girls" posed for William Goldman in the 1890s at a Reading, Pennsylvania brothel, the entire exercise transcends their initial business liaison. The instantaneous concept of click-and-shoot was still decades away. To be photographed required sitting very still. The women featured in Goldman's collection obviously caught his eye. Not just anyone is asked to be the subject of artistic documentation.

The local photographer and his anonymous muses appear to straddle an artful titillation, at times striving toward Degas nudes and at another, more in the spirit of a strip and tease. There is a beauty in even the most mundane moments.
Among Goldman's models, my own gaze zeroed in on the striped stockings and darker shades of their risqué brassieres. These ladies of Reading, Pennsylvania, might not have had the wealth of Madame du Barry, celebrated mistress of Louis XV of France, or the fame and freedom of a silver-screen sex goddess such as Mae West. But they sought to elevate their circumstances, to feel lovelier and more fashionable, with a daring pair of knickers.

To feel special is fundamental to the human condition. Few opportunities outshine a sense of specialness than when an artist asks to record your looks, your beauty. Under the right circumstances, to be the object of admiration -- of desire -- to be what is essentially objectified is not only flattering. It can also provide a shot of confidence and a sense of strength and power and even liberation, however lasting or fleeting.

For these working girls who were already going against the drudgery of toiling in a factory or as a domestic, who were surviving in a patriarchal world by their wits and sexuality, the opportunity to sit for Goldman was very likely not only thrilling. It was also empowering.
One can only imagine the mutual giddiness prevailing among them all, too, at the possible outcome from all these lost afternoon shoots. In a singular image from this collection appears Goldman striking a pose as proud as a peacock. It's one of stock masculinity in the canons of classic portraiture (though usually in military uniform), and like his muses, presented in all his naked glory. By sharing in the objectivity of the process, Goldman basks in the specialness his models must have felt. By stepping around the lens, he becomes a true confidante.

It suggests a balance of power between artist and muse, man and woman -- at least behind closed doors. Their collective decision to strip and strut for the camera reveals a shared lack of shame for the body beautiful and, in that, a shared, albeit secret, defiance of cultural mores.

By all accounts from curator Robert Flynn Johnson's devoted research on this once-lost collection, Goldman seems to have kept his treasured collection as a personal trove. As a successful photographer of weddings and social events, it was most certainly not in his interest for the public to know about his private creative pursuits.

The brothel was a necessary evil in town, where men with certain desires visited women who would oblige. In this case, it was the desire of a man to capture the beauty and sensuality of the women he befriended. There is much to learn and (most of all!) take pleasure in with this discovery.
