Pornhub appears to have removed most of the smutty videos from its site, apparently taking down more than 10 million of them as part of its recent crackdown on illegal content .
The purge marked a massive shift in the porn site’s approach to content moderation amid pressure from advocates and payment processors Mastercard and Visa, which cut ties with Pornhub last week over allegations that the platform is infested with videos of rape and child sex abuse.
In a blog post late Sunday, Pornhub said it has suspended all existing videos that were not uploaded by verified users — including its content partners and members of its Model Program — in line with a new policy it announced last week.
The sweep appeared to affect the vast majority of Pornhub’s content — there were about 2.9 million videos on the platform as of midday Monday, down from roughly 13.5 million on Sunday afternoon, according to a counter displayed in the site’s search bar.
“This means every piece of Pornhub content is from verified uploaders, a requirement that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have yet to institute,” Pornhub said in the post.
The site has slapped a notice on each suspended video saying that it has been “flagged for verification in accordance with our trust and safety policy,” according to Motherboard , which first reported on the purge.
Pornhub declined to say exactly how many videos had been removed, but a spokesman said unverified videos were similarly taken down from other sites owned by parent company MindGeek, such as YouPorn, RedTube and XTube.
Pornhub restricted upload privileges to verified users last week after an exposé by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof detailed the platform’s problem with videos of illegal sexual activity.
The site’s current verification process requires performers to upload a photo of themselves holding a sign with their Pornhub username written on it.
While Pornhub has said it plans to revamp the verification system next year, the anti-porn National Center on Sexual Exploitation contends that abusive videos can still appear on verified accounts.
“Pornhub’s solution to eliminate unverified accounts is truly a distinction without a difference,” the organization said in a statement. “Pornhub must be shut down entirely.”
Pornhub defended itself in its blog post, citing a review from the Internet Watch Foundation that found 118 cases of child sexual abuse material on the site over the past three years, far fewer than the 84 million Facebook found on its own platform in the same period.
“It is clear that Pornhub is being targeted not because of our policies and how we compare to our peers, but because we are an adult content platform,” the blog post read.
Pornhub’s attempts to crack down on illegal content did not stop Visa and Mastercard from ending their relationships with the site in response to Kristof’s reporting, which described clips of assaults on unconscious women and girls.
Sex workers told Motherboard the move could greatly damage their ability to earn a living through Pornhub, which is one of the world’s largest porn platforms. Sex Workers Outreach Project Behind Bars, an advocacy group, called it part of a “war against sex workers” waged by religious groups.
“We find Mastercard and VISA to be posturing for its over zealous base and the bad intentions and actions of the anti-trafficking community who consistently targets sex workers in order to profit from our vulnerable state of being,” the group said in a statement last week. “This action will have no impact on rapists and abusers and it will not stop sex work.”

For many young adults, porn is more of a sex education than anything they learn in school. In fact, less than half of all U.S. states mandate sex ed , so it's not surprising that teens turn to porn to learn about sex.
The problem is that mainstream porn isn't proper sex education — it's a fantasy factory with the sole purpose of profit. One site that promotes this fantasy factory, Pornhub, is attempting to bridge the gap between porn and actual sex ed with their first-ever sex education video series . The series launched today via Pornhub's Sexual Wellness Center , where the tube site provides articles about sexual health, relationships, and of course sex itself.
All of the series's first 11 videos are narrated by licensed sex therapists and PhDs; they also show real anatomy and human examples to provide accuracy and dispel sex myths, according to Pornhub's press release. The videos cover a range of topics, from communication to preparing for sex to STIs. There's even a video about having safe sex amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
One expert narrator is Dr. Laurie Betito, director of the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center. "I am thrilled to present to our followers a brand new initiative at the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center," said Betito in the press release. "As promised, we are tapping into different platforms and mediums to extend the sexual health information we bring to those who seek our resources."
The wellness center's mission, according to Betito, is to provide quality information in both an educational and entertaining way. "Many people have questions on how to have sex, so we hope that our video series will provide the visuals that go with those questions," she said. While the series began with 11 videos, Betito promised the wellness center will be adding more on a regular basis.
Our current sex education system needs a lot of work, and these videos won't solve it. At least, however, Pornhub is providing this resource so young adults can learn that "real" sex is much different than the hardcore videos on their site.

Residents are up in arms after an X-rated movie appeared online showing sex acts being filmed in a library where kids were studying.
A porn movie has sparked outrage after it was filmed at a public library with students studying just metres away.
The X-rated stunt made for Pornhub was spotted by local residents who are furious the video – which is more than 10 minutes long – was shot in broad daylight on the streets of Santa Monica and inside the Ocean Park Branch public library where sex acts were recorded.
“God forbid a child walked in the library and walked right in on the middle of it. That’s my biggest concern,” horrified neighbour Janet McLaughlin told CBS2 .
“Children don’t need to be exposed to this. If you want to do porn, stick to the hotels.”
Ms McLaughlin was so disgusted after a concerned parent sent her a link of the movie that she took to the Instagram page Santa Monica Problems to seek help.
“What took place is unacceptable,” the post read, alongside several clips of the offending movie.
It went onto claim that nothing had been done by the local authorities, though it said there “was an internal investigation to determine how these individuals were able to openly film porn inside our library” and “no library employees were involved”.
Reaction to the sex video has been strong, with people branding it “disgusting”.
“How disrespectful. I go to the library all the time and that offends me,” one said.
“This is absolutely disgusting,” another stated.
Others didn’t see the fuss surrounding the outcry, stating: “It’s just sex.”
“You do understand that this happens everywhere,” one pointed out.
Another said: “Calm down it’s literally just sex, there are worse things happening.”
The amateur porn video shows a young woman exposing herself on the streets and even outside a primary school before entering the library to carrying out sex acts.
The face of the man in the video is never shown.
The woman has appeared in other adult films, according to a report in The Sun .
A young woman claims she and her mother were stopped on the street and “surrounded” during a walk. The abuse that followed was “dehumanising”.
The acts on the main stage have been cancelled due to horror rain, but there's one spot at the festival that’s a “dry refuge”.
