Pope Francis Visits St. Mary Major Basilica to Celebrate Feast of the Dedication

Rome, August 5, 2024 – Pope Francis made a surprise visit to the Basilica of St. Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) today to mark the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica. The pontiff, who has a deep personal devotion to the Marian shrine, celebrated Mass and prayed before the revered icon of Salus Populi Romani (Protectress of the Roman People).

St. Mary Major, one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas, holds special significance for Pope Francis. In his homily, the Holy Father reflected on the basilica’s history, calling it a 'spiritual home for all Christians' and emphasizing Mary’s role as a mother who 'welcomes and accompanies the faithful.'

Historical Significance

Built in the 5th century after the Council of Ephesus affirmed Mary’s title as Theotokos (Mother of God), St. Mary Major is said to have been constructed following a miraculous snowfall in August. The annual Festa della Madonna della Neve (Feast of Our Lady of the Snows) on August 5 commemorates this event.

The basilica houses ancient relics, including fragments of Christ’s crib, and is a key pilgrimage site. Its stunning mosaics and towering bell tower make it an architectural treasure.
