Vatican Denies Rumors About Pope Francis’ Health After Controversial Video Surfaces

Rome, Italy – April 22, 2025

The Vatican has issued a stern denial following a viral video that sparked bizarre rumors about Pope Francis’ well-being. The clip, which circulated on social media late Monday, appeared to show the 88-year-old pontiff moving unusually during a public appearance, leading to wild speculation online—including unfounded claims that the Pope might be 'ill,' 'not himself,' or even the subject of a conspiracy.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni dismissed the rumors as 'baseless and disrespectful,' stating that Pope Francis is in good health and continuing his duties as usual. 'The Holy Father is actively engaged in his ministry, and there is no truth to these sensationalist claims,' Bruni said.

The controversial video, which gained traction on fringe websites, was allegedly edited to distort the Pope’s movements. Fact-checkers have since debunked the footage, attributing the odd appearance to camera angles and compression artifacts.

Despite the Vatican’s reassurances, conspiracy theories have proliferated, with some online commentators absurdly suggesting that the Pope’s body has been 'replaced' or that he is being controlled by external forces. Experts attribute the surge in misinformation to broader distrust in institutions and the rapid spread of unverified content on social media.

Pope Francis, known for his progressive stance on social issues, has faced health challenges in recent years, including knee problems and respiratory infections. However, he has remained active, with upcoming visits to Africa and South America scheduled for later this year.

The Vatican has urged the public to rely on official sources for information regarding the Pope’s health and condemned the spread of what it called 'malicious fabrications.'

As of now, Pope Francis is expected to lead Wednesday’s General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, where he will likely address the rumors directly, as he has done with past controversies.
